Nate Guenin Named Ohio State Men’s Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year – Ohio State Buckeyes

March 9, 2005 COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State junior defenseman Nate Guenin has been named Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the men’s hockey team, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Tuesday. Eleven of the 12 league teams selected a scholar-athlete. The CCHA Scholar-Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the group and honored at the 2005 CCHA Awards Banquet March 16.
The faculty representative at each school, in consultation with the head coach, selected the institution’s scholar-athlete selection. Nominees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 through the fall term of the selection year to receive the award. The league’s honoree will be chosen by a vote of the conference’s faculty representatives.
Guenin, an Aliquppa, Pa., native, was a 2004 CCHA All-Academic Team selection, the only non-senior named to the team and the first sophomore to be honored since 1993. He is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and was the 2004 Ohio State Center Ice Club Scholar-Athlete award recipient.
On the ice, Guenin earned honorable mention All-CCHA accolades in 2004 and honorable mention CCHA All-Rookie Team honors in 2003. He has played in 35-of-36 games this season, with 2-10-12 totals and a +4 rating. He was the CCHA Defenseman of the Week Feb. 7 and a 2004-05 Preseason All-CCHA honorable mention choice. Last season, Guenin played in 29 games before an injury forced him to miss the last 13 contests. He was second in scoring among defensemen with a career-best 17 points, including career-best 15 assists and also was +8 on the year. Guenin played in 42-of-43 games as a freshman, posting two goals and nine assists for 11 points and a +9 rating. He was a fourth-round draft pick of the New York Rangers in 2002.
No. 7 Ohio State (24-8-4, 21-5-2/2nd CCHA), the second seed, will play host to No. 11-seed Ferris State (12-20-4, 7-17-4/t-10th CCHA) in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The teams will meet in the best-of-three series at 7:05 p.m. Friday-Saturday (and Sunday if necessary) in Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The winner advances to the CCHA Super Six at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit March 17-19.
