Ohio State Fencing Fares Well at Midwest Regional Qualifier – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – – The Ohio State fencing squad competed Sunday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Qualifier at the Matthaei Center in Detroit, Mich. The regional is the final competition before the NCAA Championship. Selections to the national tournament are based on regional seeding (40 percent) and regional finish (60 percent).
Freshmen Buckeyes William Jeter (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) and Amelia Gaillard (Fayetteville, Ga./Counterpane) placed first in their weapon, respectively. Jeter claimed the men’s foil title after he defeated Notre Dame’s Jakub Jedrkowiak, 4-3, in a first-place fence-off. Gaillard took the women’s sabre title after 10 victories.
On the men’s side, 12 Buckeyes placed in the Top 10 of the Midwest Regional event. In men’s sabre, junior Jason Rogers (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) placed second, junior Adam Crompton (Newark, N.J./St. Benedicts) followed at the No. 3 spot, sophomore Jason Paul (Los Angeles, Calif./Daniel Murphy) tied for fourth and junior Zachary Parkins (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) finished in eighth place. In men’s foil, sophomore Boaz Ellis (Moshav Zippori, Israel/Chaklai Nahalal) placed third, sophomore Kevin Stuart (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton) took the No. 6 slot and sophomore Richard Spicer (Houston, Texas/Awty) tied for seventh place.
In men’s epee competition, sophomore Denis Tolkachev (St. Petersburg, Russia) tied for third with Wayne State’s Marek Detraszek. Sophomore Christian Rivera (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) tied for the No. 5 spot, senior Brian Gross (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) placed eighth, while freshman George Blackburne (Plymouth, Ind./Culver Military Academy) followed tied at the No. 9 position.
Eight women Buckeye fencers placed in the Top 10. In foil competition, senior Hanna Thompson (Rochester, N.Y./East) fell, 2-1, in the fence-off for first place to Notre Dame’s Alicja Kryczalo. Senior Metta Thompson (Rochester, N.Y./East) finished in a tie for fourth place with Northwestern’s Julia Foldi. In women’s sabre, freshman Siobhan Byrne (Eislingen, Germany/Freihof) placed third, while freshman Eileen Grench (Davis, Calif./Davis) tied for fifth.
In women’s epee action, three OSU fencers placed in the Top 10. Sophomore Kaela Brendler (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) tied for third with opponents from Notre Dame, junior Marguerite Plekhanov (Montclair, N.J./Kimberly Academy) tied for seventh with Northwestern foes and sophomore Caitlain O’Sullivan (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) rounded out the bracket for the Buckeyes at the No. 10 spot.
Other Buckeyes who placed at the regional event included, junior Alexandra DiCerbo (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) at 12th place in women’s foil and freshman Leslie Lampman (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) with a 14th place finish in women’s epee.
Next up, the Buckeyes will wait for the fencing selection committee’s seeding for the NCAA Fencing Championship, which begins on March 17 in Houston, Texas. Last season at the NCAA Championship, the Buckeyes claimed the title after the squad outscored second-place Penn State by 34 points, 194-160, en route to the national crown. Ohio State posted the second-highest team total in the five years that the NCAA has contested events in the six weapons.
