Ohio State Rowing First Varsity Eight Receives Big Ten Boat of the Week Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Big Ten Conference named the Ohio State rowing first varsity eight Big Ten Boat of the Week Monday. The fifth-ranked Buckeye boat earned the award for defeating No. 6 Virginia and No. 17 Duke at the ACC/ Big Ten Duals on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio.
The first varsity eight opened the 2005 season with a 2-0 record for the fifth-consecutive year. The Buckeye boat topped Duke by 16.4 seconds in the morning and edged Virginia by 4.7 seconds in the afternoon, posting times of 6:32.3 and 6:25.5, respectively.
Members of the winning boat were Franziska Schubert (Sr., Dresden, Germany), Jana Schiller (Jr., Marquardt, Germany), Beth Tompkins (Sr., Westerville, Ohio), Ninett Kossowsky (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Jess Shepherd (So., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (So., Giessen, Germany), Amanda Purcell (Sr., Hilliard, Ohio), Diana Albrecht (Sr., Dresden, Germany) and coxswain Laureen Ellison (Sr., Edgewood, Ky.).
This marks the first award for the Buckeye boat this season. Last season, Ohio State’s top boat earned the award five-consecutive weeks.
Ohio State will face No. 4 Michigan Saturday on Lake Belleville in Ann Arbor, Mich.
