Ohio State Synchronized Swimming Fares Well in Semifinals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team (21-0) competed in the solo, duet and trio semifinals Thursday on the first day of competition at the 2005 Collegiate National Championships. The event, which runs through Saturday, is being held at the O’Connell Aquatic Center in Gainesville, Fla.
Ohio State sophomore Becky Kim (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) finished second behind Stanford’s Katie Norris in the solo event. Kim, Ohio State’s only representative in the event, recorded a score of 93.200, and will move on to participate Saturday in the finals.
Kim joined teammate Lindsay Newbill (Laguana Hills, Calif./Laguana Hills) to win the duet event with a score of 95.700. Along with Kim and Newbill, the duets of Michelle Benzie (Fr., El Cajon, Calif./Granite Hills) and Julia Broadfoot (Fr., El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla), and Leayn Pinette (Fr., Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) and Leah Pinette (Fr., Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) also moved on and will compete in the finals.
In the trio event, the group of Ellen Hacker (Newark, Ohio/Newark), Kim and Newbill tied for first place with a Stanford trio, earning a score of 94.900. Teammates Carly Grimshaw (Jr., Markham, Ontario/Markham District), Chelsea Luker (Montreal, Quebec/Antoine De St-Exupery) and Lauren Marsh (Sr., Spring Valley, Calif./Monte Vista) finished third with a mark of 94.400. Both trios will compete Saturday in the finals.
All four technical competition categories (`A’ through `D’ figures) will be held Friday, beginning with `D’ figures at 8 a.m. The team semifinal also is scheduled for 4:50 p.m. Friday in addition to the technical competitions.
