Senior jumper Rosalind Goodwin became the first Ohio Statestudent-athlete to record back-to-back conference titles in boththe long and triple jump this past weekend at the 2005 Big TenIndoor Track and Field Championships. Goodwin claimed the long jumpas she tied a season-best mark of 20 feet, 3 inches, a mark thatcurrently ranks third all-time in the Ohio State indoor recordbooks. In the triple jump, the Louisville, Ky., native topped thefield with a school record mark of 43-10 1/2. Both of Goodwin’smarks in the long jump and triple jump rank among the topperformances nationally. Goodwin will to improve upon herprovisional mark in both events as she competes in the Alex WilsonInvitational. Mitch Richeson claimed the Big Ten title on the1-meter springboard event on the opening night of the 2005 Big TenSwimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Richesonstarted the meet by qualifying seventh in the preliminary roundwith 309.60 points. He then won the 1-meter crown by scoring 367.60points. Richeson defeated Indiana diver, Marc Carlton, by roughly25 points. Carlton had previously beaten Richeson on the 1-meterboard earlier this season.
Athletics Good Stuff
Women’s basketball earned a share of the 2005 Big Tenchampionship Feb. 27 after a 69-58 victory vs. Penn State. TheBuckeyes, who share the title with Michigan State, will be the No.1 seed in the 2005 Big Ten Tournament. Ohio State has never earneda No. 1 seed in the conference tournament until this season. Thebest seed prior to this year was a No. 3 seed in the 2004tournament. Ohio State’s share of the Big Ten title is its firstsince the 1992-93 Buckeyes finished as co-champions before making arun to the national title game.
In the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament, the No. 3/6 and No. 1-seed Ohio State women’s basketball team (27-3; 14-2 Big Ten) takes on the winner of the No. 8-seed Wisconsin (11-15; 5-11 Big Ten) vs. No. 9-seed Indiana (10-17; 3-13 Big Ten) game at noon EST Friday at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The winner moves on to face the winner of the No. 4-seed Minnesota vs. No. 5-seed Purdue game at 3:30 Sunday in the semifinals.
Jessica Davenport was named the 2005 Big Ten Player of the Year by both the coaches and media and head coach Jim Foster was the coaches’ selection for coach of the year, the Big Ten Conference announced March 1. Caity Matter was named to the coaches and media second teams and Brandie Hoskins garnered coach and media third-team honors. Davenport was the only unanimous first-team selection on both the coaches and media’s first teams. A center from Columbus, Ohio, Davenport is the second Buckeye sophomore to win player of the year honors. Ohio State’s Tracey Hall, a two-time All-American, won the award in 1986 as a sophomore and again in 1987 as a junior. Lisa Cline (1989) and two-time All-American Katie Smith (1996) are the only other Big Ten players of the year in Buckeye history.
Foster is Ohio State’s first coach of the year since Tara VanDerveer was dubbed the league’s coach of the year in 1984 and 1985, the first two seasons the accolade was awarded. He led the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten co-championship since the 1992-93 Ohio State team was co-league champions. The Buckeyes’ share the title with Michigan State and have earned OSU’s first No. 1-seed in the Big Ten tournament. Ohio State’s perfect 17-0 record in Columbus is the best for any squad in the 40-year history of OSU basketball. This season, Foster’s team was ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press rankings for three-consecutive weeks. A No. 2 ranking is the highest in program history.
The fencing team defeated Notre Dame by 55 points to placefirst overall Feb. 26 at the Midwest Conference Championship inSouth Bend, Ind. The Buckeyes claimed the title after the men’ssquad finished first overall and the women fencers placed secondbehind the Fighting Irish. This is Ohio State’s second-consecutiveMidwest Conference crown. Last season, the Buckeyes edged outtop-ranked Notre Dame. On the men’s side, Ohio State took first inall three weapons and tallied a total of 540 points, 65 pointsbetter than second place Notre Dame. The women Buckeye fencersplaced second in the competition, just 10 points behind first placeNotre Dame. The women’s squad recorded a total of 490 points in thethree weapons, placing first in sabre, second in foil and fourth inepee. Ohio State is back in action March 6 at the Midwest RegionalChampionship in Detroit, Mich. The Buckeyes will shoot to qualifythe maximum of 12 fencers to compete at the NCAA ChampionshipsMarch 17-20 in Houston Texas. The women’s ice hockey team split ahome series against Minnesota State in Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 25-26.The Buckeyes defeated MSU, 5-3, Friday and fell, 3-2, in the finalminutes Saturday. The Buckeyes held MSU scoreless on 9-of-11power-play chances on the weekend. OSU’s power play capitalized on2-of-5 opportunities Saturday to close out the weekend 3-for-11.Senior Buckeye Jeni Creary recorded her first hat trick of theseason in OSU’s 5-3 victory Friday. OSU’s leading scorer, JanaHarrigan led the Buckeye squad with five points vs. MSU lastweekend. Friday, Harrigan had a hand in four of OSU’s five goals.She scored a goal and tallied three assists as she hit the 50-pointmark this season. She scored an additional goal Saturday to improveto 51 points, on 16 goals and 35 assists.
Ohio State recognized the 2004-05 senior class and their parents prior to the game Feb. 26. The five seniors have combined for a total of 291 points, 151 goals and 140 assists. The five Buckeye seniors and their career totals are Jeni Creary (3-59-142), Jennifer Desson (32-26-58), Melissa Glaser (.902 save percentage, 2.1 goals-against average), Jaclyn Haines (5-15-20) and Meaghan Mulvaney (31-40-71).
Ohio State travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the 2005 WCHA Women’s Playoff Championship Thursday through Sunday at Ridder Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Buckeyes (16-15-3; 12-15-1 WCHA) are the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face No. 5 Minnesota State (9-19-6; 8-17-3 WCHA) Friday at 8:05 p.m. EST.
The No. 6/8 men’s hockey team completes regular-season playwith a home-and-home series with instate and Central CollegiateHockey Association rival Miami this weekend. The teams will meet at7:35 p.m. Friday in Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio, and at 8:05p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. Saturday, the Buckeye seniorclass – captain JB Bittner, Lee Spector and Thomas Welsh – will behonored postgame. The group is the first senior class in OSUhistory to record at least 20 wins in each of their four seasonswith the squad.
Next week, the Buckeyes, who clinched a Top 2 seed in the CCHA tournament, will play host to the first round of the CCHA playoffs. The best-of-three series will be held at 7:05 p.m. March 11-13 in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes will face either Western Michigan, Ferris State or Notre Dame in the first round, with the winner advancing to the CCHA Super Six at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit March 17-19.
The softball team (5-5) travels to the Buzz Classic thisweekend hosted by Georgia Tech in Marietta, Ga. The Buckeyes, whowon the tournament in 2002, will face Gardner-Webb, South DakotaState, Boston University and South Carolina before being seeded andplaced in a single-elimination bracket, to be played Saturday nightand Sunday. Ohio State is being led at the plate by sophomoresJamee Juarez (.476), and Nycole Koyano (.385), while Juarez owns a3-4 record in the circle with a 2.92 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 36innings pitched. Junior Chelsea Baker is 2-1 with a 2.62 ERA and isbatting .316. The track and field teams competed at the 2005 BigTen Indoor Championships this past weekend. The men’s squadfinished sixth with 49 points as they competed in West Lafayette,Ind. The women, who traveled Ann Arbor, Mich., placed fifth with atally of 67.5 points.
Leading the women’s fifth-place effort was senior Rosalind Goodwin as she became the first Ohio State student-athlete to record back-to-back titles in both the indoor long jump and triple jump events. Also joining Goodwin on the championship podium was sophomore sprinter Jenna Harris as she claimed her first-career Big Ten title by winning the 60-meter dash. In the field events, senior Shelaine Larson missed first-place standings by one place as she finished runner-up in the shot put and weight throw.
On the men’s side, Ohio State received winning performances from senior Bryan Duby and freshman Tony Cole. Duby paced the field in the weight throw to give the Buckeyes the weight championship for the third straight season. Cole earned his first Big Ten indoor title in the 60m to give Ohio State a sweep in the event on both the men’s and women’s side.
Ohio State returns to action Friday as they compete in the Alex Wilson Invitational. The University of Notre Dame will play host to the two-day event in South Bend, Ind.
The Big Ten Conference announced Cole as the 2005 Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, Wednesday. Cole received the honor following his victory in the 60-meter this past weekend at the conference championships in West Lafayette, Ind., where he timed a mark of 6.76 to earn his first-career conference championship. Cole is just the second Buckeye to earn freshman of the year honors. Former Buckeye Aaron Payne was the first to collect the award in 1990.
The men’s golf team returns to action at the 2005 St. CroixCollegiate Classic in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Friday. XavierUniversity will play host to the three-day event at the par 72,6,843-yard Carambola Golf Club.
The 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday with a shotgun start. The event will conclude on Sunday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Women’s lacrosse opened the 2005 season with a 14-2 victory athome against Duquesne. Seven Student-athletes scored in the gamewith freshman Kelly Kremer scoring a game-high four goals. InsideLacrosse named Kremer an honorable mention player of the weekselection. KC Carter, Brandie Williams and Natale Miller each addedtwo goals in the contest. Lindsey Weiner produced a team-high fourground balls against Duquesne. Carter and Kremer shared team-highhonors with three draw controls each while Carter, Regina Oliverand Willams each had two caused turnovers. OSU’s Kim Hastingsstarted in goal and played 55 minutes. She gave up two goals andhad eight saves. Rifle’s Ryan Kohatsu (Sr., Hilo, Hawaii) receivedfirst-team All-Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference honors inboth smallbore and air rifle at the WIRC championships last weekendat Purdue. OSU’s Linnea Nygren (Jr., Hayward, Calif.) was named tothe second team for smallbore rifle. As a team, Ohio State finishedthird in both smallbore (2,245) and air rifle (1,490) at thechampionships. 14th-ranked men’s volleyball will host ClarkeWednesday and IPFW Friday in Midwestern Intercollegiate VolleyballAssociation matches. The Buckeyes (10-5 overall, 3-1 MIVA) splitroad matches last week. OSU fell to No. 12 Loyola, 3-1 (27-30,30-20, 30-15, 30-26) last Friday and then defeated Clarke, 3-0(30-26, 30-18, 30-25). Andy Cole had a team-high 17 kills (.412)against Loyola with Mark Greaves adding 10. Conor Martin produced ateam-high 10 digs while setter Daniel Mathews had 47 assists andequaled his career-high of four ace serves. Against Clarke, ScottSpurlock, Layne Dreven and Cole shared team-high honors of sevenkills each. Mathews had 38 assists and added four ace serves forthe fourth time this season. The team recorded the 800th win of theprogram Sunday with the 3-0 victory at Clarke. The synchronizedswimming team will compete in its final event in the Varsity Poolat the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center when the Buckeyes play host to theNorth Regional Championships at 1 p.m. Saturday. The meet also willmark the final home competition for seniors Marjorie Ardito,Heather Burdick, Stacey Coffman, Mary Elliott, Bethany Galla,Valerie Jolibois, Lauren Marsh and Lindsay Newbill, The women’sgolf team heads south to compete in the Lady Gator InvitationalMarch 4-6 in Gainesville, Fla. Traveling for the Buckeyes will beseniors Kristen White and Lindsay Knowlton, sophomore Dana Je,junior Jennifer Selfinger and freshman Carling Coffing. Livescoring and complete results will be available online atwww.golfstat.com. The No. 2 men’s gymnastics team defeated No. 4Penn State, 222.075-215.5, Saturday evening at the RecreationBuilding in University Park, Pa. With the win, the Buckeyes improveto 10-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in conference action. OSU’s team scoreis the second-highest road output in the nation since 2000.
Senior co-captain Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa., Central Pa., Academy of Gym.) paced the Buckeyes by winning two events and not scoring below a 9.5. Monahan took the top spots on floor and rings, scoring a 9.55 and 9.725, respectively and finished second on vault (9.5) and high bar (9.55). He earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week accolades for his performance, the fifth conference honor he has received in his career.
The No. 12 men’s tennis team (6-5, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up apair of wins over weekend play. The Buckeyes recorded their firstshutout against a Top 25 opponent after the squad defeated No. 22Virginia Commonwealth Feb. 25 in Columbus, and defeated No. 42Alabama, 4-3, Sunday in Tuscaloosa. Sophomore Buckeye Joey Atas,ranked No. 74 in the ITA Division I singles poll, picked up twowins over higher ranked opponents in weekend action. Atas upsetVCU’s 11th-ranked Arnaud Lecloerec and defeated No. 46 Alabama’sLuigi D’Agord. Up next, Ohio State returns to action March 21 ontheir spring break trip to face Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach,S.C., and Vanderbilt March 23 in Nashville, Tenn. The Buckeyes areback at home March 26 and 27 as the squad opens Big Ten playagainst Iowa and Minnesota in Columbus. Under sixth-year head coachTy Tucker, the Buckeyes are 4-1 in Big Ten openers. Last season,OSU opened league play March 14 with a 6-1 win over Penn State inState College, Pa. The baseball team is 1-1 after beating MiddleTennessee, 8-4, Friday, before losing to Troy, 6-4, Saturday, atthe Wiregrass Baseball Classic in Dothan, Ala. The non-conferencegame vs. Iowa Sunday was rained out. Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr.,Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) led the team with a .571 battingaverage, going 4-for-7 as the Buckeyes’ designated hitter. He hadone hit against the Blue Raiders, but then went 3-for-4 againstTroy with two singles and a double. Jacob Howell (So., Ashland,Ohio/Ashland) batted 4-for-8 with three singles and his fifthcareer triple. Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village,Calif./Agoura) had two hits in the series, but knocked in ateam-best four runs. Mike Madsen (Sr., Canfield, Ohio/Notre DameCathedral Latin) picked up his 18th-career victory against MiddleTennessee after allowing one run on three hits through 5.0 inningsof work. Ohio State will open the LeClair Classic against Georgia,a team that advanced to the 2004 College World Series, Friday at 2p.m., before meeting North Carolina Saturday at 2 p.m. and ArizonaState Sunday at 10 a.m. All three teams were in the NCAA tournamentlast season. Georgia is 5-1 and was ranked as high as sixth in thenation last week, while North Carolina is ranked as high as fourthwith an 8-0 record. Arizona State, which was one of the Top 10teams in the nation in the preseason polls, is 8-10. The men’slacrosse team fell to then-No. 7 Navy, 11-5, Saturday at North TurfField in Columbus. Against the Mids, six Buckeyes posted a point,with Justin Doran, Ben Wolff, Kevin Buchanan, Chris Brown and GaryBining scoring goals and Jason Bloom adding an assist. The Buckeyesreturn to action with a game against UMBC at 1 p.m. Saturday atJohns Hopkins’ Homewood Field in Baltimore. The game will betelevised live by WMAR TV 2 in Baltimore and will be shown on atape-delayed basis on ESPNU at 1 p.m. Sunday. The women’s gymnastics team (5-7,0-4 Big Ten) will host its final two meets of the season this week.First the Buckeyes break from regular season action to host a coedexhibition meet against the Japan College All-Stars at 7 p.m.Thursday in St. John Arena and remain home to close out their homeschedule against No. 21 Arizona at 7 p.m. Saturday.
With an average score of 9.845 on balance beam, Liz Meaney (Sr., Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) currently ranks 18th in the Gym Info national beam rankings. With her score of 9.850 on beam last weekend Meaney claimed her sixth beam crown in seven meets.
The men’s basketball team takes on Iowa Wednesday (8 p.m./ESPNPlus/WBNS 10 TV) in the final regular season road game of theseason for the Buckeyes. Ohio State plays its home finale Sunday ina noon contest against No. 1 Illinois. CBS Sports will televise thegame to a national audience. Tip time is 12:05 p.m. with BillRafftery and Gus Johnson calling the action. Ohio State is 14-2 athome this season and 13-2 in Value City Arena. Ohio State is 3-1 atVCA vs. the Illini, including a pair of victories over rankedIllini squads. The Buckeyes are 8-0 against ranked Big Ten teams atVCA when the facility is a sellout. In all games, the Buckeyes are13-4 against ranked Big Ten teams at VCA, including a 2-1 recordvs. Illinois.
Men’s basketball head coach Thad Matta helped the OSU College of Dentistry introduce a new dental outreach coach, which was launched at W. Mound Elementary School last week.
The women’s tennis team posted a 1-2 record last weekend,falling at No. 17 Tennessee Friday and at home to No. 7 KentuckySunday before topping Akron, also Sunday.
Against Akron, Ohio State took all six singles spots and all three doubles matches. In doubles, Buckeyes Lindsey Adams and Sonia Ruzimovsky beat Courtney Brenkus and Mindy Price, 8-0, at No.1. At No. 2, Ohio State duo Emily Howard and Meredith Vincent beat Laura Hemlepp and Stephanie Miles, 8-0. At No. 3, Buckeyes Caitlin O’Keefe and Kristin Messmer picked up an 8-2 win over Amy Sherlock and Vero Duchesne. In singles, three Buckeyes earned straight-set, 6-0, 6-0 victories. Emily DeCamilla downed Brenkus at No. 1, Messmer stopped Price at No. 3 and O’Keefe beat Hemlepp at No. 5. Also winning for Ohio State were Anna Volberg, Lindsay Bryan and Silvia Prajescu. Ruzimovsky picked up the Buckeyes lone victory against Kentucky, at the No. 4 spot.
The Buckeyes return home for their next match, against Texas Christian at 10 a.m. March 12th at the Jesse Owens West Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio.
