Men’s hockey sophomore goalie Ian Keserich went 2-0 againstUnion last weekend in the first back-to-back starts of his career,allowing just one power-play goal in each game. He stopped 60-of-62shots for a .968 save percentage and a 1.00 goals-against average.He had 30 saves in each game, one shy of his career best of 31 setNov. 14, 2004 vs. Northern Michigan. The 30 saves were a Buckeyeseason high. Women’s basketball junior center Jessica Davenportnotched a career-best 18 rebounds to accompany 15 points to leadOhio State to a 68-57 win at Southern California Sunday. The gamemarked her 22nd career double-double. Davenport has posted adouble-double in four of six games this season and now has scoreddouble figures in her last 25 games and in 40 of her last 41contests.
Athletics Good Stuff
Brandie Hoskins led the Buckeyes with 20 points and JessicaDavenport pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds to accompany 15points to lead the women’s basketball team to a 68-57 win atSouthern California Sunday. The Buckeyes limited USC to just 34.9percent shooting (22-63) from the field and turned 15 turnoversinto 18 points to record road win No. 2 this season.
Ohio State returns home for a much-anticipated matchup with No. 3-ranked LSU Thursday. The Lady Tigers have reached the Final Four in each of the last two seasons and boast the returning Wade Trophy Player of the Year in Seimone Augustus.
The men’s basketball team is off to a 5-0 start heading intoits game with Belmont Wednesday and the road game at Iowa StateSaturday. The Buckeyes have used a balanced scoring offense to datewith five players averaging in double figures. Senior Je’Kel Fosterleads the team with 15 points a game following a career-high24-point effort at St. Joe’s last Saturday. Foster is one of thenation’s top field goal shooters by percentage, ranking seventhoverall nationally from the field and fifth from 3-point range. Themen’s hockey team ended the first part of its season with atwo-game sweep of Union in Value City Arena last weekend. JuniorSean Collins was named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week after theseries after posting a goal and an assist and team-best +4 ratingin the series. Tom Fritsche had a team-best three points in theseries. Last week, Fritsche was named to the U.S. National JuniorTeam that will compete in the IIFH World Junior Championship laterthis month in British Columbia. He is the fourth Buckeye selectedfor the prestigious team.
The Buckeyes are now on a break until they return to action in the Ohio Hockey Classic at Nationwide Arena in downtown Columbus. On day one, OSU will take on Holy Cross at 8:05 p.m., preceded by Miami and Rensselaer at 5:05 p.m. The winners will meet in the championship game at 8:05 p.m. on day two, with the third-place game at 5:05 p.m.
Women’s volleyball Marisa Main and Danielle Meyer have beennamed to the 2005 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)All-American Team. Main was named to the second team for the secondyear in a row, while Meyer was named to the third team. The men’sgymnastics team continues its exhibition schedule with the Scarletand Gray meet at 2 p.m. Friday in St. John Arena. Men’s soccersenior defender Kyle Veris was a first-team selection and sophomoreforward Xavier Balc earned third-team honors on the NSCAA GreatLakes All-Region team, announced last week. A berth on thefirst-team all-region squad puts Veris in the running for a spot onthe NSCAA All-America team. The wrestling team opened its dual meetschedule vs. Missouri Sunday. Although the Buckeyes dropped a 25-13decision to the Tigers, four Buckeyes posted wins in theirrespective weight classes, including 2005 NCAA qualifier Kirk Nail(So., Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson). In his first match of2005-06, Nail won by 13-4 major decision. Teammates, J Jaggers(149) (Fr., Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel), Alex Picazo (197)(Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Grandview) and Steve Sommer (157) (Sr. WestCarrollton, Ohio/Dayton Carroll) also secured victories for theBuckeyes.
Ohio State will compete in the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro, Dec. 29-30 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The women’s hockey team dropped its final two games of 2005 toSt. Cloud State Dec. 9-10 at National Hockey Center in St. Cloud,Minn. The series was the last time the teams will meet in theregular season this year with both sweeping their home series. TheHuskies rallied with two third-period goals Friday for a 4-3 win.OSU came within one goal twice in the game Saturday but fell by afinal score of 5-3. It was the first time in program history thatthe Buckeyes lost both games of a series to SCSU. Senior JanaHarrigan scored a goal Friday and an assist Saturday to extend herpoint streak to 11 games. She has eight goals and nine assists for17 points since Oct. 29. It is the second double-digit point streakin Harrigan’s career. The senior co-captain had a career-long14-game streak last season.
Ohio State wrapped up the first half of their season with an even 8-8-2 record through 18 games. After hitting the road for five series in the first half, the Buckeyes travel just three times in the remaining 16 games including its return to the ice Jan. 6-7 with a series at Minnesota State in Mankato, Minn.
