Ohio State ended the first period with a 1-0 lead. Sean Collins (Jr., Troy, Mich.) got the Buckeyes on the board, as he got to a loose puck and his slap shot got through traffic and in. Dave Barton (Jr., Calgary, Alberta) and Matt McIlvane (So., Naperville, Ill.) assisted on the goal, which came at18:06. The Buckeyes were outshot in the period, 10-3. Ohio State was scoreless on its one power-play chance and held the Dutchmen, who went into the second period with the man advantage, scoreless on two chances.
The Buckeyes went ahead 2-0 on Beaudoin’s (Jr., Sherbrooke, Quebec) breakaway goal at 15:49 of the second period. After McIlvane blocked a Union shot attempt, Barton picked up the puck and knocked it off the glass to Beaudoin in the neutral zone. He streaked into the zone and slid the puck by Union goalie Kris Mayotte for his team-best sixth goal of the season. The Buckeyes outshot the Dutchmen in the period, 11-8. Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play.
There was no scoring in the third period until Union’s Scott Seney tallied with 1:10 remaining. The Dutchmen had a 6-on-4 advantage when the goal was scored, as the Buckeyes had a man in the box and Union pulled Mayotte for the extra attacker. The Buckeyes were assessed a two-many men on the ice penalty with 22 seconds remaining, again giving the Dutchmen a 2-man advantage with the net empty, but held on for the win. Postgame Quotes
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On Union’s performance
“They outshot us. Union won the first period but we won the game tonight. They came in and gave a good road effort.”
On Ian Keserich’s performance
“I thought Ian (Keserich) came in and did a good job considering the situation. He wants to come in and compete. Hopefully we can support him more tomorrow.
On Ohio State’s performance
“We were stressing a lot of stuff this week. We made our players play their positions tonight. We have to build off of the positives from tonight. Hopefully, we can get our energy back for the early game tomorrow.”
Mathieu Beaudoin, Ohio State junior forward
On the line switches
“It’s our (Beaudoin, Matt McIlvane and Dave Barton) first week on the line together and we all know our role on the team. We are trying to play more physical.”
Dave Barton, junior forward
On the line switches
“All three of us (Beaudoin, McIlvane and Barton) played center before and it helps because we all know how to play defense. We (the team) settled down because perimeter shots don’t always generate goals.”
Nate Leaman, Union College head coach
On the game
“It was a really good college hockey game tonight. I thought we carried the first period. We executed our game plan well. They carried the second period, then the third period was pretty even. The difference was they scored two goals in 20 shots and we scored one in 30 shots.”
On the last three minutes
“The last three minutes really helped our confidence for tomorrow night. To get that score in really helped. We got down a little after they scored their first goal, so our score helped. You have to give their goalie credit, because he made the shots we took look easy.”
On Ohio State
“They are really good at pressuring and anticipating. We saw it on the tape before the game and we knew it was coming. They out-worked us tonight.”
On the back-to-back games against the same team
“We try to treat these games like the playoffs. In our league, we only play back-to-back games during the playoffs. I like this format. Both teams have to go both nights and it’s almost like playing a fourth period on the ice.”
Josh Coyle, Union sophomore right wing
On the power play
“We were struggling moving the puck in the zone. We weren’t supporting each other enough.”
On playing Ohio State
“This is good for us – it is a very big test. We made stops tonight but we have little details to work on for tomorrow. Their first goal was a great shot and burst our bubble.”
