Athletes of the Week
Scott Green and Ross Wilson won the ITA National Indoor DoublesChampionship at the Racquet Club of Columbus Sunday. The pairbecame the first duo to win consecutive-titles at the event in the27-year history of the tournament.
The No. 2 seeded Buckeye pair defeated Middle Tennessee’s Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom 9-7 in a dramatic championship match. Green (Sr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and Wilson (Sr., Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales) fell a game behind, then would tie the score again and again until their first lead, which finally arrived at 8-7.
The duo now has three national doubles titles to their credit. Green and Wilson are now 6-1 on the year. The Buckeyes are at the Big Ten Indoors this week in East Lansing, Mich.
Athletics Good Stuff
The men’s soccer team beat Michigan, 1-0, last Friday to earnthe No. 2 seed in the Big Ten championship this weekend andimproved to 10-6-2 overall. The Buckeyes will face host and No. 7seed Northwestern at 3:30 p.m., with the semifinals being playedFriday and the championship game Sunday. The No. 2 seed is thesecond-consecutive for Ohio State, a first for the program. TheBuckeyes have now posted double-digit wins seven times underninth-year head coach John Bluem.
Men’s soccer co-captains Kevin Nugent and Ray Burse Jr. have received honors for their roles in leading the Buckeyes to a 1-0 win over Michigan last Friday. Nugent was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, while Burse was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. On Senior Night, Nugent scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute, marking his third game-winner of the season and seventh goal overall, while Burse had one save and directed the OSU defense to the shutout, his fourth of the season.
The men’s and women’s cross country teams compete at the 2005Great Lakes Regional meet in Bloomington, Ind. After a second-placefinish at the Big Ten championships Oct. 30, the men’s team jumpedfrom No. 26 to No. 15 in the Mondo Men’s Cross Country poll andwill look to improve upon a sixth-place finish at the regionalevent last season. The women’s hockey team (5-4-1, 3-4-1 WCHA)split a WCHA series with No. 4 Minnesota Nov. 4-5 in Minneapolis.The Buckeyes fell in an offensive shootout Friday by a score of9-5. The team was down 5-0 at one point and came within two goalsat 7-5 led by Jana Harrigan’s hat trick, but the Gophers scored twogoals to maintain the win. On Saturday, the score was 1-1 after thefirst period and remained tied throughout the second and thirdperiods to send the game into overtime. With the final secondsticking away, sophomore Shelby Aldous scored the game-winning goalat 4:56 to give Ohio State its first win over Minnesota since 2001,a span 20-games long. The win also snapped a five-game winlessstreak for the Buckeyes.
Junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer was selected as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league on Nov. 7. It is the second such honor for Vanderveer this season and fourth of her career. The award also marks the third weekly honor for a Buckeye this year. Vanderveer stopped 33 of 34 shots faced in Ohio State’s 2-1 win on Saturday at Minnesota. She allowed the single goal in the first period and stonewalled the Gophers in the last two periods of regulation and overtime. The lone UM goal was scored on the power play, but Vanderveer stopped the other 13 shots faced while OSU was on a penalty kill, a span that totaled 17:13 of the game. It was only the third time in 30 meetings with Minnesota in which OSU limited to Gophers to one or fewer goals. For the weekend, Vanderveer made 71 saves to push her over the 1,000-career saves mark at 1,026.
The Buckeyes next return to Columbus to host Princeton (2-1-1) in a non-conference series Nov. 11-12. Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink. Ohio State holds an all-time record of 3-2-0 over the Tigers. It is the second non-conference series for OSU this season; earlier the Buckeyes swept Northeastern Oct. 14-15 in Boston.
The No. 3-seed field hockey team competed in the Big TenTournament Nov. 4-5 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Buckeyes advanced tothe semifinal game for the 12th time in 13 conference tournaments.The Buckeyes defeated No. 6-seed Michigan State by a score of 1-0behind a goal by senior Lucy Clayton, her 17th of the season. OhioState did not allow the Spartans a shot on goal in the game. OSUthen faced No. 2 Indiana in the semifinal and tied the game at 1-1on a goal by Curlyne Wynn before falling by a final of 3-1. Claytonand junior Florencia Stier were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Buckeyes (15-6) await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament selections on Tuesday. The 16-team field will be announced at 7:45 p.m. on CSTV.
The women’s basketball team was ranked No. 4 in the AssociatedPress 2005-06 Preseason Poll released Tuesday. The No. 4 rankingserves as the highest for Ohio State in the AP preseason poll inprogram history. Ohio State was ranked eighth by the first AP pollof the 1993-94 season, a year after advancing to the NCAAchampionship game. Duke was ranked No. 1 by the AP, followed byTennessee and LSU. Last week, the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll alsoranked the Buckeyes fourth.

The women’s tennis team ended the fall season at the ITANational Indoor Championships. Sophomore Caitlin O’Keefe competedin singles and paired up with freshman Julie Blackmore in doubles.Wrestlers T.J. Enright (So., Galloway, Ohio/Westland), who jumpedfrom the 133 to 141 weight class, is 16th in both theWrestlingMall.com and W.I.N. Magazine polls. J Jaggers (Fr.,Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) holds down the 19th spot at 149 inW.I.N. Magazine and Kirk Nail (So., Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) is15th at heavyweight in W.I.N. Magazine and WrestlingMall.com. Nailis 19th in the Intermat.com standings and also cracked the Top 20in the USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) pollat No. 20.
The wrestling team kicks off the 2005-06 season Saturday and Sunday at the Michigan State Open.
The men’s swimming and diving team opened its season lastFriday in its new home – the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion- with a 137-97 win over Miami (Ohio). The team won 12 of 13 eventswith Joe Doyle, Matt Voelker and Wes Wieser each winning twoindividual events. Doyle won the 200-yard freestyle and the100-yard butterfly. In the butterfly event, Doyle recorded alifetime-best time of 49.63. Voelker won the 50- and 100-yardfreestyle, while diver Wieser opened his first meet as a Buckeyewith a double-win in the 1- and 3-meter springboard competition.The Buckeyes will return to action Friday at 5 p.m. against theCincinnati Bearcats at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.The women’s swimming and diving team defeated Bowling Green,171-124, winning 15 of 16 events at Bowling Green. Nicole Maglichand Gulsah Gunenc each won three individual races throughout themeet. Maglich won the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events, alongwith the 100-yard backstroke. Her time of 10:06.27 in the1,000-yard freestyle was 28 seconds faster than any othercompetitor. Gunenc claimed her wins in the 100- and 200-yardbutterfly and the 200-yard individual medley. The Buckeyes returnto Columbus Friday at 3 p.m. for their first dual meet in the newBill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The meet will be adouble-dual meet against Michigan and Purdue. 19th-ranked women’svolleyball lost 0-3 at third-ranked Penn State last Wednesday andwon 3-1 at Indiana Saturday. Nicole Britenriker scored a team-high10 kills at Penn State. She had 15 kills and a match/career-high 25digs at Indiana. Danielle Meyer had a match-high 21 kills againstIndiana and added a career-high 19 digs against the Hoosiers.Felicia Jones added a career-high 12 kills in the match whileAshley Kiel posted a season-high 20 digs. The Buckeyes continue onthe road this week, playing at Illinois Friday and at PurdueSaturday. Rifle edged out Akron by three points in a three-teammeet at Akron. OSU totaled 4,579 points in the contest while Akronscored 4,576. Placing third in the meet with a 4,095 score was theJohn Jay School of Criminal Justice. OSU’s Ryan Kohatus was the topshooter in both events posting a 587 in smallbore and a 584 in airrifle. Buckeye Linnea Nygren placed second in smallbore with a 582and tied for fifth in air rifle with a 573 score. Staci Collinsfinished third in air rifle for Ohio State with a 576.
The rifle team will next compete at Morehead State Nov. 12.
The men’s hockey team has this week off before returning toaction next Tuesday (Nov. 15) against Michigan State in Value CityArena. That single game is followed by a two-game series with LakeSuperior State Nov. 18-19 in VCA. The cheerleaders will travel toWalt Disney World, Jan. 13-16, to compete for the 2006 CollegeCheerleading National Championship. Ohio State recently won theNortheast Region competition to qualify for the nationalcompetition for the 17th time in the last 19 years. Ohio Statefinished sixth at the competition last season after placing 15th in2004, seventh in 2003 and sixth in 2002. The Buckeyes earned asecond-place finish in 2001 and placed sixth in 2000. Ohio Statewon the 1993 College Cheerleading National Championship. By winningtheir region, the Buckeyes received an automatic bid to thenational competition, as well as free transportation and hotelaccommodations.
