Brian Olinger became the first Buckeye to claim the regionalindividual title Saturday in leading the Ohio State men’s crosscountry team to an all-time best third-place finish at the 2005NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships in Bloomington, Ind. Thereturning All-American from Fresno, Ohio and Ridgewood High School,crossed the finish line in a time of 30:51.5 on the 10-kilometercourse. Last season, Olinger took fourth place at the regional meetbefore finishing 21st at the national meet.
Olinger will lead the Buckeyes at the 2005 NCAA Championships Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Buckeye wrestler J Jaggers captured the Michigan State Opentitle at 149 pounds Sunday at Jenison Field House in East Lansing,Mich. As the No. 2 seed in the two-day event, Jaggers (Fr.,Bedford, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) recorded falls in each of his firsttwo matches at 1:27 and 2:51 after receiving a first-round bye.Jaggers went on to defeat OSU teammate Jordin Humphrey (Jr.,Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), 10-2, in the semifinals of thechampionship bracket. In the championship match, Jaggers downed No.1 seed Darren McKnight of Michigan State, 6-3, for his first MSUOpen title.

The men’s soccer team has been selected to the NCAA tournamentMonday for the fourth time since 2000 and will travel to No. 24Santa Clara for a first round game Friday. The winner will face No.7 seed California next Tuesday in Berkley, Calif. The Buckeyes(11-7-2) advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten championshiplast week and are ranked fourth in the Great Lakes region headinginto the NCAA tournament. The men’s cross country team was selectedas an at-large qualifier for the 2005 NCAA Championships Monday.The Buckeyes will run at the Championships Nov. 21 in Terre Haute,Ind., with the men’s 10-kilometer race starting at noon.
With its bid Monday, Ohio State has reached the NCAA meet in five of the last six seasons under head coach Robert Gary.
At the Great Lakes Regional meet Saturday, Brian Olinger won the individual men’s title to lead the Buckeyes to a third-place team finish at the Indiana University Cross Course in Bloomington, Ind. Olinger was one of six Buckeyes to place in the Top 40 as freshman Jeff See joined the team captain as an all-regional team member with a 22nd-place finish.
The field hockey team concluded its 2005 season in the firstround of the NCAA tournament. OSU finished with a record of 15-7for the third-best season in program history. The 15 wins also tiedthe second-most in a season. The Buckeyes fell to No. 4 seed OldDominion by a score of 5-4 Nov. 12 at North Turf Field. The scorewas tied four times in the game, but ODU took the lead at the 57:18and held it for the win. Sophomore Yesenia Luces had two goals andan assist in the game to finish with a team-high 44 points thisseason. Luces, senior Leticia Fragapane and juniors Saskia Muellerand Curlyne Wynn were named to 2005 Dartfish/NFHCA First TeamAll-West Region while senior Lucy Clayton was named to the secondteam. The women’s hockey team (6-5-1, 3-4-1 WCHA) split its weekendseries with then No. 9-Princeton rallying from a 4-1 defeat Fridayfor a 2-1 win Saturday. Senior Jana Harrigan scored the lone OSUgoal Friday shorthanded and followed with the game-winning emptynet goal Saturday. Freshman goaltender Liana Bonanno made her firstcareer start Saturday and stopped 34 of 35 shots faced to also pickup her first career win. For her performance in net, Bonanno wasnamed WCHA Rookie of the Week.
The Buckeyes will next host North Dakota Nov. 18-19 in a WCHA series. It is the first time this season OSU has played back-to-back home series. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday at OSU Ice Rink.
The men’s hockey team hosts three games this week, beginningwith a matchup vs. Michigan State at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday in ValueCity Arena. The game is the squad’s Scarlet and Gray contest. TheBuckeyes close out the week with a two-game series with LakeSuperior State. The teams will face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday andSaturday in VCA. Brian Koniecko (Fr., Long Island, N.Y./Syosset)dropped his semifinal singles match Monday 2-6, 1-6 to DimaIshtuganov of Indiana at the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Indoors SinglesChampionship in East Lansing, Mich. Koniecko, the No. 4 seed at thetournament, defeated Indiana’s David Bubenicek, 6-3, 6-2 to advanceto the quarterfinals where he defeated D.J. Geatz of Minnesota,6-4, 6-3 for a berth in the semifinals. Ohio State concluded thefall portion of its schedule and will now begin preparation forcompetition in the spring. The Buckeyes open spring play Jan. 25against Toledo (10 a.m.) and Xavier (5 p.m.) at the Jesse OwensWest Recreation Facility in Columbus. Men’s tennis added twoplayers to the roster during the current national signing period.Centerville, Ohio’s Justin Kronauge, the No. 1-ranked player in theUnited States Tennis Association’s national 18s rankings, signed toplay for Ohio State last week. Kronauge has rated at the No. 3player in U.S. juniors as a 16-year-old and won the Ohio HighSchool Division I singles title as a sophomore. He will join theBuckeyes for the 2006-07 season. Ty Tucker, Ohio State head coach,also added one of the top rated junior players from Germany aswell. Steven Moneke, a native of Alten-Buseck, German, will jointhe Buckeyes in January 2006. Moneke is ranked among the Top 50junior players in the world at No. 47 and is the sixth-rated juniorin Germany. The men’s basketball team will open the regular seasonat 2 p.m. Sunday against Chicago State at Value City Arena. Thegame will be televised locally on WWHO UPN Ch. 53 and carried onWBNS Radio 1460 AM The Fan. The Buckeyes won both their exhibitiongames against Findlay and Ashland in preparation for the 2005-06season opener. With one day to prepare, the Buckeyes get right backon the court next Tuesday against Butler (8 p.m./WBNS 10 TV) atValue City Arena. Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach, and BrandonMiller, director of men’s basketball operations, both are Butlergraduates. The men’s basketball team welcomed five members to itsprogram last week with the signing of high school seniors GregOden, Mike Conley, Daequan Cook and David Lighty along with juniorcollege freshman Othello Hunter. The class is being touted as oneof if not the best class nationally with Oden, a 7-foot center whoearned several national player of the year accolades after hisjunior season, rated as the top high school player in the country.Congratulations to Coach Matta and his staff for their efforts. Therowing team concluded its fall season with two victories at theRivanna Romp Sunday at the Rivanna Reservoir in Charlottesville,Va. The Buckeye’s first varsity eight won its event for thefifth-consecutive year while the first pair also won its race. OSUalso competed in the varsity four with the second boat finishingfourth in the event. The first varsity eight finished with a timeof 13:51.88 to take first over 21 other boats. They finished almostnine seconds ahead of Wisconsin in second place at 14:02.30. Thesecond OSU varsity eight was 11th with a time of 14:47.40, whilethe third varsity eight placed 16th at 15:12.62. In the pair race,the first Buckeye pair won with a time of 17:07.94. The second,third and fourth OSU pairs finished seventh (18:06.57), eighth(18:46.63) and ninth (19:45.75), respectively. The men’s golfprogram signed one of the top-ranked players from Spain last week.Patrick Simard, a native of Marbella, Spain, owns 25 Top 5 finishesand 14 individual titles in Spain. OSU has had a MSU Open champion every year since 2002. Tommy Rowlands (heavyweight) and Blake Kaplan (174) were winners in 2002 and 2003. Last year, J.D. Bergman (Jr.,Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor) and T.J. Enright (So., Galloway, Ohio/Westland) captured titles at 197 and 133 pounds, respectively.
Rifle defeated Morehead State, 4,533 to 4,421 Saturday. OSU’sRyan Kohatsu was the top shooter for the Buckeyes with a 580 scorein smallbore rifle and a 585 mark in air rifle. Linnea Nygrenranked second for Ohio State in smallbore at 566 and third in airrifle at .567. Steven Nozaki shot a 569 in air rifle for theBuckeyes with Jeff Naswadi receiving a 559 in smallbore rifle. TheBuckeyes will return to action Jan. 21 when they face the U.S.Military Academy at Palmyra, Pa. 17th-ranked women’s volleyballdefeated Illinois, 3-0, and 14th-ranked Purdue, 3-2, last weekend.Ami Stevens had a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs in the win atIllinois. She had a team-high 19 kills at Purdue. Danielle Meyeradded 16 kills and nine blocks against the Boilermakers withFelicia Jones adding 12 kills. OSU hosts Iowa Friday and No. 17Minnesota Saturday in the final regular season home matches. Thefourth-ranked women’s basketball team opens its season at 7 p.m.Monday vs. defending Ohio Valley Conference champion EasternKentucky at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes have a 17-game homewinning streak and have won their last 16 contests in VCA. EasternKentucky is the first of seven teams that reached the 2005 NCAAtournament to visit Columbus this season. The men’s swimming anddiving team defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 155-124 Friday in theMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The team won 12 events during the meet,and managed to win the Top 4 spots in four individual events. TheBuckeyes opened up the meet with a four event sweep. Starting withthe 200-yard medley relay, the team of R.J. Lemyre, FelipeTravesso, Joe Doyle and Matt Voelker combined their skills to winthe event with a time of 1:31.88. Following the relay, the Buckeyesswept the Top 4 spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Rob Tiernan swama 9:33.34 to touch the wall first, while Jordan Hershberger, RyanStoneburg and Scott Blake followed closely behind. Doyle and Lemyrewrapped up the first four events for the Buckeyes. Doyle took the200-yard freestyle, hitting the wall in 1:40.80. Lemyre out-reachedthe other competitors in the 100-yard backstroke, clocking in a50.46.
The Buckeyes took the top four places in the 200-yard butterfly. Daniel Novak won the event, hitting the wall at 1:51.77, with Marty Tomes closely behind at 1:52.34. Chris Stoneburg and Stoneburg, finished third and fourth, respectively. Gary Grant and Voelker combined for a 1-2 finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Tiernan returned for his second individual win of the night in the 500-yard freestyle. The senior clocked in a time of 4:33.22. The Buckeyes had their final Top 4 sweep in the 100-yard butterfly. Grant won the event with a 49.81, his second win of the night. Nate King claimed the last individual event of the meet. He clocked in a time of 4:00.45 in the 400-yard individual medley. Wes Wieser swept the springboard events for the second meet in as many weeks. Scoring 282.95 in the 1-meter and 343.65 in the 3-meter, Wieser won the top spot for each event. His score in the 3-meter surpassed his score in the event last week against Miami (Ohio). The Buckeyes return to action Friday at 6 p.m. with a meet against Kenyon.
The women’s swimming and diving team fell to both Michigan andPurdue in its season home opener at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.The Buckeyes lost to Michigan 208.50-91.50, while Purdue won231-69. Purdue beat Michigan 156-144. During the meet, the Buckeyesrecorded nine season best times for the team. The Buckeyes openedthe meet finishing third in the 200-yard medley relay. In the firstindividual race, Nicole Maglich finished third after a close racein the 1,000-yard freestyle. Maglich finished with a lifetime-besttime and the team’s fastest time this season, 9:59.80. GrietBuelens finished third in the 200-yard freestyle. Buelens touchedthe wall in 1:51.50. Gunenc followed by out-racing Michigan in the200-yard butterfly, although Purdue’s Carlene Takaki managed thewin by two hundredths of a second. Gunenc’s time of 2:00.57 was alifetime-best time for the junior. In the 100-yard freestyleMaglich returned to finish second against Michigan, clocking in at52.71.
Maglich returned for the second distance freestyle event – the 500 – and led the first half of the race. Maglich clocked in at 4:54.44, taking second place. Gunenc for the second time in the meet lost a butterfly event to only one person. Purdue’s Takaki won the 100-butterfly, while Gunenc followed in second with a lifetime-best time of 56.17. Anesa Beard combined six dives in the 1-meter event for a total score of 240.00. The score placed her ahead of the Michigan divers. The divers then moved to the 3-meter springboard competition. Beard was the highest Buckeye finisher in the event, placing third in both dual-meets in six dives. In the final event of the night, the Buckeye relay team pooled their talents in the 400-yard freestyle relay to race to a third-place finish overall in a time of 3:31.34.
Up next, the Buckeyes meet Kenyon Friday at 6 p.m. in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
