Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On exhibition games
“I like playing these (exhibition) games because Ashland played well today. They came out and came at us. Both Findlay and Ashland were well coached.”
On Ohio State’s performance at the end of the first half
“I think the transitions started to flow. It started with our defense and extended to our offense. It opened the game up for us.”
On OSU’s goals for next week
“We need everybody to be involved. We need to give (Terence) Dials more shots and keep him out of foul trouble. We are striving to get our defense started earlier.”
J.J. Sullinger, senior guard
On the current state of the team
“We have a long way to go. We need to keep getting better. I like where we are right now, but we need to keep getting better everyday.”
On the OSU offense
“Everyone was waiting for a home run play and we can’t do that. We spoke after the game about it. We need to chip away and chip away and wear people down.”
On OSU’s depth
“A lot of teams have 15 guys and play eight. We have 10 guys and everybody contributes. I think we could be deeper than last year.”
Ron Lewis, junior guard
On the OSU defense
“As the game went on we just picked up the pressure. We got into their passing lanes and decided to `d-up.’ We need to start doing that earlier.”
On sparking the OSU offense
“We just need a spark. It can come from anyone at anytime. We need to be more consistent.”
Ivan Harris, junior forward
On his preferred position
“I feel more comfortable at the 3 (forward). I’m trying to drive the ball and get to the free throw line. I think I only went to the line eight times last year.”
On what his coaches tell him to do
“They just tell me in practice to be more relaxed out there. Also to drive and get to the line and attack the boards.”
Roger Lyons, Ashland head coach
On the game
“We appreciated the opportunity to come down here. We didn’t play error free basketball by any means but we certainly played hard. We’re not as fast, big or as strong as they are but I think we showed that we certainly get a great effort from our kids.”
On the Ashland game plan
“We wanted to open up the game and run the floor and try to take the size out of the game, but in the second half they really slowed it down on us.”
On Ohio State and getting the ball to Terence Dials early
“They are a deep team, very strong and very fast. They are also very well coached. Early, when the game was tight they knew just where to go with the ball (to Dials) and that is the sign of a well coached team.”
