Ohio State Rowing Competes in 2005 Rivanna Romp – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team will travel to Charlotesville, Va., Sunday to participate in the Rivanna Romp held at the Rivanna Reservoir. Virginia, Miami, Cincinnati, North Carolina, Clemson, Texas and Wisconsin will face Ohio State in its first race of the fall season. Racing begins at 10 a.m. Events will consist of an eight, four and pair competitions. Ohio State is entering three varsity eight boats, three varsity four boats and three pairs. Only the Buckeye varsity squad will make the trip. The Ohio State first varsity eight won the Rivanna Romp the last four seasons.
Last Season’s Rivanna Romp
Ohio State’s first varsity eight won the 2004 Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. The Buckeyes’ top boat finished first out of 19 crews, earning its fourth-consecutive Rivanna Romp title. OSU’s first varsity four finished second, while the second and third fours took seventh and 10th, respectively.
The Buckeyes’ first varsity eight won the 2004 Rivanna Romp with a time of 13:42.7, 10 seconds ahead of Virginia. The OSU second varsity eight finished sixth at 14:30.6, while the third varsity came in 14th at 15:19.5.
In the varsity four competition, Ohio State’s first four earned second with a time of 15:28.3, just three seconds behind first place Virginia. The OSU third varsity four finished seventh at 16:03.4, while the Buckeye third four finished 10th at 16.16.6.
Ohio State also had athletes row a second time in the pairs competition. The Buckeye pairs claimed second (17:00.2), 13th (18.35.3) and 14th (18.37.2).
The 2004-05 Season
The Buckeyes concluded its 10th year of rowing in honorable fashion. The Buckeye’s tied a program best fourth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships, received their third-consecutive regional title and placed second at the Big Ten championships.
Ohio State began its spring season with its first of three home regattas, facing nationally ranked Virginia and Duke at the ACC/Big Ten duals. The squad defeated both teams to place themselves into the Top 3 teams in the nation and earn Big Ten Boat of the Week accolades. Following a strong start to the season, the first varsity eight remained in the Top 10 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Poll the rest of the season and suffered only one loss, which came against Michigan. At the Big Ten championships, OSU finished second in the conference and took that momentum into the regional championship. After two days of intense racing, Ohio State came out on top to clinch its third-consecutive central regional title and receive a bid to its sixth-consecutive NCAA championships.
The Buckeye’s tied their program best receiving fourth place overall as a team at the NCAA championships in Sacramento, Calif. Both the first and second varsity eight boats made their third appearance in the Grand Finals, which marked the first time both boats appeared simultaneously in the event. The first varsity finished sixth, while the second varsity eight took fourth place. The first varsity four took fourth place in the petite final to finish 10th overall.
For their success during the post season, the Buckeye’s received numerous awards, including three All-Americans, four earned All-Central Region honors and four were named to All-Big Ten teams. Assistant coach Robbie Tenenbaum concluded the awards, receiving Central Regional Assistant of the Year.
For their effort off the water and in the classroom, the Buckeye’s garnered 21 academic All-Big Ten honorees and 44 Ohio State Scholar-Athletes.
Next up for the Buckeyes
The Buckeyes will be away from competition for the next three months in preparation for the 2006 spring season, which includes a team trip to Miami, Fla., over winter break. This season, Ohio State will vie for its seventh-consecutive trip to the NCAA championship.
