July 20, 2004
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sixteen home games in Value City Arena, as well as a December tournament at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, highlight the Ohio State men’s hockey schedule for the 2004-05 campaign. The squad’s home opener is Thursday, Oct. 21, vs. Central Collegiate Hockey Association rival Miami (Ohio) when the 2004 CCHA Super Six championship banner will be raised in a pregame ceremony.
In addition, the NCAA Frozen Four will be played April 7 and 9 in Value City Arena, OSU’s home rink. It marks the first time the national tournament will be held at an on-campus site since the 1983 tournament was played at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D.
The CCHA again will use clusters, with three groups of four teams, for scheduling. The teams that make up each cluster will face each other four times (twice at home and twice on the road). Each team will face the eight squads outside its cluster twice. The Buckeyes are joined by Miami, Western Michigan and Ferris State in their 2004-05 cluster.
Ohio State opens the season in the Ice Breaker Tournament Oct. 8-9 in Durham, N.H. The Buckeyes face host New Hampshire in the opening round and will face either St. Cloud State or St. Lawrence in the championship or consolation game.
Just one of the Buckeyes’ next six games, all CCHA contests, will be played at home. The squad opens league play with a two-game series at Ferris State before a home-and-home series with Miami, including the Buckeyes’ home opener vs. the RedHawks Thursday, Oct. 21, and a game in Oxford, Ohio, Oct. 22. OSU then travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., to face Western Michigan Oct. 29-30.
The Buckeyes return home for four consecutive games, with a non-conference series against Sacred Heart (Nov. 5-6) and a league series with Northern Michigan Nov. 13-14. Following a trip to face Nebraska-Omaha Nov. 19-20 and a week off, OSU will play host to Alaska Fairbanks Dec. 3-4. The OSU squad ends the first part of the season with two games at Clarkson Dec. 10-11.
Ohio State returns to action at the inaugural Ohio Hockey Classic at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, home of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets. The tournament, which features CCHA teams taking on Western Collegiate Hockey Association members, opens Dec. 29 with OSU facing Minnesota State and Miami going up against Colorado College. OSU will play the Tigers and the RedHawks will take on the Mavericks Dec. 30.
The Buckeyes return to league play with a two-game home set against Ferris State Jan. 7-8, followed by a trip to Notre Dame Jan. 14-15.
Six of the Buckeyes’ next eight games will be in Value City Arena, with back-to-back home series against Michigan (Jan. 21-22) and Western Michigan (Jan. 28-29), as well as two games with Bowling Green Feb. 11-12. A trip to Lake Superior State Feb. 4-5 precedes the games with the Falcons.
OSU closes out the regular-season slate with a trip to Michigan State Feb. 18-19 before a home-and-home series with Miami. The Buckeyes and RedHawks will meet in Oxford, Ohio, March 4, and will end the regular season in Columbus March 5.
All 12 CCHA teams qualify for postseason play, with the top six seeds playing host to the bottom six seeds in best-of-three series. The winners advance to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit and the CCHA Super Six Championship. Play-in games will be held Thursday, March 17, with the semifinals Friday, March 18, and the championship and consolation games Saturday, March 19. OSU claimed the Mason Cup as the CCHA Super Six champion last season, beating Michigan, 4-2, in the title game.
Season, group and individual-game tickets will go on sale Aug. 1 and can purchased by contacting the athletics ticket office at 1-800-GO-BUCKS or 614-292-2624 or by ordering online at hangonsloopy.com.
