Ohio State Earns Fourth-Place Finish in NACDA Directors’ Cup – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State University athletics program finished fourth in the annual National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) 2003-04 United States Sports Academy Directors’ Cup. The finish marks the second-consecutive year Buckeye athletics rank in the Top 5, following the department’s third-place finish in 2002-03.
The Buckeyes’ total of 1,026.5 points trailed first-place Stanford (1,337.3), second-place Michigan (1,226.3) and third-place UCLA (1,178.8). Stanford collected its record 10th-consecutive cup. Georgia rounded out the Top 5 with 1,005.3 points. Ohio State, fifth after final winter standings were released, had nine of its 11 eligible teams earn points during the spring season, more than any other school.
For the year, nine men’s and nine women’s teams scored points for Ohio State, headed by the national champion fencing team’s 100 points. In all, six Buckeye teams finished in the Top 5 and 11 in the Top 10. Those teams placing in their respective Top 5 rankings were wrestling (third place, 82.5 points), football (fourth, 80), men’s gymnastics (fourth, 80), men’s outdoor track and field (fourth, 75) and men’s tennis (fifth, 73). Rounding out the list of Top 10-finishers were women’s rowing (eighth, 46), women’s golf (eighth, 70.5), men’s lacrosse (ninth, 25) and men’s ice hockey (ninth, 25).
Other teams to score points for the Buckeyes were men’s cross country (15th, 45), women’s tennis (17th, 50) women’s soccer (17th, 50), women’s basketball (17th, 50), men’s swimming (30th, 43.5), women’s outdoor track and field (32nd, 41.5), softball (33rd, 25), women’s swimming (36th, 32) and men’s golf (41st, 32.5). The NACDA Directors’ Cup program began in 1993-94 and was developed jointly by USA Today and NACDA as the sole national awards and academic scholarship program to recognize all NCAA and NAIA championship sports for both women’s and men’s athletics.
