COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State led the conference with 148 student-athletes named to the 2004 Big Ten Academic All-Conference Team for spring and at-large sports. A student-athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second year of school and have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better to be eligible for the award.
The Big Ten Conference recognized 1,892 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2003-04 academic year, the highest total in the last decade, eclipsing the previous best of 1,857 set just one year ago. Ohio State topped the Big Ten for the second-consecutive year with 249 honorees, just one shy of the school’s league record of 250 student-athletes during the 2002-03 campaign.
Ohio State’s Sarah Cass (So., Upper Arlington, Ohio) a member of the track and field team, was one of 14 Big Ten student-athletes who has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average.
Buckeye student-athletes are excelling in competition as well as in the classroom. A number of Ohio State student-athletes with outstanding athletic accomplishments during the 2004 season earned Academic All-Big Ten accolades. On the golf course, Allison Hanna (Sr., Portland, Ore.) was named Big Ten Player of the Year while Kevin Hall (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) was the individual medalist at the Big Ten championships. Jessica Marshall (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) earned the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor, in addition to helping the pistol team to a first-place finish in both the air and sport events to win the championship. Marshall defended her titles by winning first place in both events. Tatiana Grigorieva (Sr., Moscow, Russia) led the rowing team to an eighth-place finish overall and the first varsity eight to a fifth-place finish at the 2004 NCAA Championships. She is a two-time All-Central Region honoree and a two-time All-Big Ten selection. Left-handed pitcher Mike Madsen (Jr., Canfield, Ohio) led the Big Ten with nine wins while left-handed pitcher Josh Newman (Sr., Wheelersburg, Ohio) finished third in the Big Ten with 100 strikeouts. Jacob Howell (Fr., Ashland, Ohio) was named the Big Ten Baseball Freshman of the Year. Softball’s Kristi DeVries (Sr., Corona, Calif.) became the second player in Ohio State history to total 600 strikeouts in a career. She also was a Second Team All-Big Ten selection. Aaron Fisher (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and Rob Myers (Sr., Rushville, Ohio), both distance runners on the track and field team, paced runner-up times in their respective events at the 2004 NCAA Mideast Regional Championship May 28-29. Fisher placed second in the 3,000-meter steeple, while Myers raced to another second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Heading to the NCAA championships June 9-12, Fisher owns the top time in the country in the steeplechase, while Myers ranks in the 1,500-meter Top 5.
