Junior leftfielder Steve Caravati was named the Big TenBaseball Player of the Week. Caravati boosted Ohio State into firstplace in the Big Ten race by batting .474 (9-for-19) with seven RBIand five runs scored as the Buckeyes won three of four games on theroad at Michigan State, which entered the weekend alone atop thestandings. The junior leftfielder produced three doubles and twohome runs, good for a .947 slugging percentage in the series. Heopened with a double and a long ball in the opening loss to theSpartans and registered back-to-back three-hit games to wrap up thefour-game set, including another double and homer with three RBIand two runs scored in the finale. Caravati, who is batting .339 onthe year, is in the midst of an 11-game hitting streak, just oneoff his career long. The No. 1 rowing first varsity eight was namedBig Ten Co-Boat of the Week Monday. The Buckeyes closed out thedual season with a perfect 8-0 record, marking a first in programhistory, as they defeated three Big Ten teams over the weekend. OSUshares the honors with Michigan State’s first varsity eight. TheOSU first varsity eight topped Minnesota, No. 13 Wisconsin and Iowalast Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. Ohio State finished 5.25 secondsahead of Minnesota in the morning with a time of 6:42.8. The boatfollowing with another winning performance in the afternoon as itfinished with a time of 6:36.7 defeating Wisconsin (6:39.32) andIowa (6:47.54). Members of the winning boat were Susi Wesenberg(Sr., Rostock, Germany), Ellen Maas (Fr., Amsterdam, theNetherlands), Amanda Purcell (Jr., Hilliard, Ohio), Merideth Corley(Alexandria, Va.), Wilma Dressel (Fr., Dortmund, Germany), AnnaFago (Fr., Giessen, Germany), Diana Albrecht (Jr., Dresden,Germany), Tatiana Grigorieva (Sr., Moscow, Russia) and coxswainAshley Orr (Sr., Dublin, Ohio).

The women’s golf team will play host to the 2004 Big TenChampionships this weekend on the OSU Scarlet Course. The Buckeyes,led by head coach Therese Hession, are looking for their thirdconsecutive conference title. Senior Allison Hanna, who will becompeting on her home course for the final time, also is seekingher second consecutive win at the event. The first round isscheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. The final round is slated for 8a.m. Sunday. Admission is free to the public. 11th-ranked men’svolleyball with a 3-1 (30-27, 30-27, 24-30, 30-24) victory over12th-ranked Ball State and a 3-0 (30-26, 30-24, 30-20) win overQuincy won the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Associationregular season championship. Mark Greaves had 18 points and ScottSpurlock, 17 in the win over Ball State. Spurlock had 11 kills, hit.625 and added a match-high 10 assist blocks. Against Quincy, AndyCole had 16.5 points with Greaves adding 15.5 to win OSU’s 18thMIVA championship. The Buckeyes have earned the No. 1 seed in theMIVA Tournament by winning the regular season championship. OSUwill host 8th-seed Quincy (7-17, 3-13) at 7 p.m., Saturday, April24 in a quarterfinal match. The winner will advance to the MIVATournament semifinals, hosted by the highest remaining seed afterthe quarterfinal matches. The No. 8 men’s lacrosse team won itseighth consecutive game when it came back from an 11-4 latethird-quarter deficit to beat Hobart in overtime, 13-12, lastSaturday in Geneva, N.Y. The Buckeyes were led by Anthony Gilardi,who scored a team-best four goals in the game, while Ryan Laffeyscored the overtime gamewinner. The Buckeyes close out their homeregular-season slate this weekend with two games. The Buckeyes(9-2, 2-0 GWLL) play host to Air Force (3-6, 1-2 GWLL) at 4 p.m.Friday and Denver (7-3, 2-1 GWLL) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Jesse OwensMemorial Stadium in Columbus. The baseball team (17-14, 8-4 BigTen) took three of four games last weekend at Michigan State tomove into first place in the Big Ten conference. After falling 10-7in the first game, the Buckeyes were able to claim the final threegames of the series, winning 8-7 in game two, 19-2 in game threeand 12-10 in the finale. Derek Kinnear was the top Buckeye atMichigan State though he did not play in the series opener. In thefinal three games of the series, he was 7-for-10 with four doubles,three RBI and five runs. Steve Caravati also had an impressiveseries, batting .474 (9-for-19) in the four games with threedoubles, two home runs, seven RBI and five runs scored. BrettGarrard, who hit a grand slam in game three against Michigan State,continues to lead the Buckeyes with a .351 batting average. Afterplaying host to Wright State Wednesday at 6:35 p.m., Ohio Statewill welcome second-place Michigan in a four-game Big Ten series atBill Davis Stadium. The teams will open the set Friday with asingle game at 6:35 p.m. and then play a doubleheader Saturday at4:05 p.m. The series concludes Sunday with a single game at 1:05p.m. Women’s Lacrosse (4-8, 1-3 ALC) – Regina Oliver scored threegoals and Ashley Evans added two as Ohio State lost 12-9 atVanderbilt Sunday. Evans has scored at least one goal in the last11 games. The Buckeyes have home games against Penn State Fridayand Lafayette Sunday. College Sports Television will broadcast thePenn State game. The women’s tennis duo of Lindsay Williams (Sr.,Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Grove) and Meaghan Colville (Sr.,Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) upset the nation’s No. 38 rankedteam of Katie McGaffigan and Lindsay Martin of Wisconsin, 8-1,Saturday in Wisconsin. The win was the 12th of the season forWilliams and Colville, which leads the team. The Buckeyes (8-12,3-5 Big Ten) conclude their season this weekend with a matchagainst Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Friday and against Minnesota at 11:30a.m. Sunday at the Stickney Tennis Center. The track and fieldteams competed in their first team-scoring meet of the season asthey played host to the 2004 All-Ohio Track and Field Championshipsat Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium last weekend. The women’s teamdefended its 2003 team title with 158.5 team points, while the men,minus the bulk of the men’s distance unit and national championthrower Dan Taylor, claimed fifth-place with 89 team points.
Junior jumper Rosalind Goodwin headlined the event for the Buckeyes as she turned in a record-setting performance in the women’s long jump, leaping 20-11.75 to score first place. Goodwin, who also won the triple jump with a bound of 42-8, was one of two Buckeyes to claim top honors in multiple events as sophomore thrower Amarachi Ukabam recorded event wins in the shot put and discus. Senior hurdler Molly Logan and junior thrower Keturah Lofton each helped the cause with first-place marks in the 110-meter hurdles and hammer throw events. The men were led by junior John Morris, who led the OSU sprints team with a season-best 48.00 to win the 400-meter dash.
Taylor and a select group of men’s distance runners competed at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., with Taylor scoring a second-place finish in the shot put (65-5.50) and the distance team turning in an impressive overall performance. Junior Aaron Fisher clocked a season-best and NCAA regional qualifier in the men’s steeplechase, while fellow juniors Dan Glaz and Matt Penza each scored Top 5 marks in Ohio State annals in the men’s 10,000 meters. Another junior, Brian Olinger, also etched his name in the OSU record books as he ran the 5,000 meters in 13:56.02, which stands third all-time at Ohio State.
The men’s golf team tied for third at the 2004 Robert KeplerIntercollegiate this past weekend at the Ohio State UniversityScarlet Golf Course. The Buckeyes finish in the event is thesquad’s sixth Top 5 finish this season, which equals last year’stotal. Leading the way for the Buckeyes this past weekend wassenior Zach Doran as tallied a three-round score of 218 to finishin sixth place. Ohio State returns to action this weekend tocompete in the Bruce Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Michigan.The No. 19 men’s tennis team (19-3 overall, 7-1 Big Ten) closed itshome season last weekend as the squad defeated Northwestern, 5-2,and shut out Wisconsin, 7-0. The win over the Badgers marked theBuckeyes’ 10th shutout this season and second in the Big Ten. OhioState closed out the season undefeated at home with 14 victories.Ty Tucker, Ohio State head coach, secured his 100th career win infive years at the helm of the Buckeye program after the squadtopped the Wildcats. Seniors Jeremy Wurtzman and Brenton Continiplayed in the Scarlet and Gray for the last time at home. BothWurtzman and Contini won their doubles and singles matches. Nextup, Ohio State closes its regular season in matches against Iowaand Minnesota. The Buckeyes travel to face the Hawkeyes at 3 p.m.Friday, April 23 in Iowa City, Iowa, and the Gophers at noonSunday, April 25 in Minneapolis, Minn. Men’s gymnasticshead coach Miles Avery led the U.S. Senior Men team to a firstplace finish with 44 medals at the 2004 Pacific AllianceChampionships. The U.S. squad claimed 29 gold, 11 silver and fourbronze medals.
Morgan Hamm and brother Paul Hamm, who train with Avery at the Steelwood Athletic Facility, claimed seven medals. Morgan captured gold on floor and tied Paul for the bronze on pommel horse. Paul won gold on vault and high bar, silver on floor and bronze on pommel horse and parallel bars.
The Ohio State softball team (26-17; 3-7 Big Ten) has six gamesthis week and the countdown is on for the senior class. KristiDeVries, Beth McAbier and Breana Pozzi are just four wins why ofbecoming the winningest class in Ohio State softball history. TheBuckeyes begin by playing host to Southeastern Conference opponentKentucky in a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday at BuckeyeField. Kentucky is 22-24-1 on the season and 5-19 in SEC play. OhioState then takes to the road to face Big Ten opponents Illinois andIowa this weekend. The Buckeyes play the Fighting Illini at 6 p.m.EDT Friday and at noon EDT Saturday. Both games will take place atEichelberger Field in Champaign. Ohio State plays Iowa in adoubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. EST Sunday at Pearl Field.Illinois is 29-15-1 and 7-3 in the conference, while the Hawkeyesare 29-17 overall and 8-2 in the league. The Hawkeyes are rankedsecond and Illinois is third among the current Big Ten leaders.Additional team notables include, Chelsea Baker, Nycole Koyano,Karisa Evans and Megan Schwab are hitting .377, .345, .317 and.315, respectively, to aid the Buckeye offense. Baker hasdrastically improved lately, upping her average from .100 as ofMarch 6 to her current .377 mark, including a .364 the last sixgames with eight hits, 2 doubles, four runs and 2 RBI. Over $7,500was raised for the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund April 14as the men’s soccer team battled the Columbus Crew in the ThirdAnnual Connor Senn Memorial Match. The fund has raised over $42,000to date. Buckeye Kevin Nugent tallied a goal off an assist fromPeter Withers, but The Crew took a 5-1 victory over Ohio State.
