Ohio State Fencers Claim Midwest Conference Titles – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing squad placed 19 student-athletes in top individual spots March 7 at the 2004 Midwest Conference Championships in South Bend, Ind. Buckeyes Adam Crompton (sabre), Louise Bond-Williams (sabre), Boaz Ellis (foil) and Hanna Thompson (foil) each captured the Midwest Conference fencing title in their respective weapons.
Crompton (So. Newark, N.J.), undefeated with 22 victories this season, defeated Notre Dame’s Patrick Ghattas, 15-6, in the final round of sabre competition. Bond-Williams (Jr., Gloucestershire, England) claimed her third-consecutive women’s sabre title after taking a 15-8 decision over Notre Dame’s Valerie Providenza in finals action. Bond-Williams holds a 33-1 record this season. Ellis (Fr., Zapora, Israel), 37-1, took the No. 1 spot in foil competition and Thompson (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) captured the women’s foil title.
Other Buckeyes placed in top spots in individual action. In men’s epee, Brian Gross (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) tied at No. 3, Spencer Jones (Sr., Ft. Leonardwood, Mo.) placed No. 5, Denis Tolkachev (Fr., St. Petersburg, Russia) followed at No. 6 and Christian Rivera (Fr., Bloomfield, N.J.) finished No. 8. In women’s epee, Alexandra Shklar (Sr., Jerusalem, Israel) tied for No. 3, Caitlain O’Sullivan (Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) took No. 9, Kaela Brendler (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) finished No. 10 and Talia Viggers (So., El Paso, Texas) followed at No. 11. In men’s foil, leading the way for the Buckeyes were Richard Spicer (Fr., Houston, Texas) and Alexander Law (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) who tied each other for third and Nathan Weir (Sr., Kennewick, Wash.) who captured the No. 6 spot.
Sabre competition was lead by Jason Paul (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Zachary Parkins (So., The Woodlands). Paul tied for third and Parkins finished at No. 12. On the women’s side, Syvenna Siebert (Fr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) tied for third and Kelly Lone (Fr., Minneapolis, Minn.) placed No. 11.
The Buckeyes claimed the Midwest Conference title placing first overall with 1030 points. The men’s squad, which combined for 540 points, edged out top-ranked Notre Dame (475) by 65 points. On the women’s side, the Buckeyes topped the Fighting Irish (485) by just five points and Northwestern (475) by 15. Ohio State’s performance in the competition led them to a combined overall first place finish to knock off defending national champion Notre Dame.
The Buckeyes are back in action March 13 at the Regional Championship in Evanston, Ill. Ohio State will wrap up season play March 25-28 at the NCAA Championship hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
