COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (15-14-3 overall, 10-12-2 WCHA) fell to Findlay, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in the fourth and final battle for the Ohio Cup at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Oilers (15-14-4, 4-6-2 CHA) clinched their first Ohio Cup victory in the four-year history of the competition.
Ohio State was assessed two penalties in the first period, Findlay took advantage of the opportunity to get on the scoreboard first as they scored on the second power-play. The Oilers scored the first goal of the game at 14:47, as Hilary Foord scored on a shot from just inside the blue line. UF’s Leanne Tunks assisted on the play. The Oilers outshot the Buckeyes 10-2 in the first period.
There was no scoring in the second period, as Findlay maintained its one-goal lead. The Buckeyes had two power-play chances, but could not get the puck past Findlay’s goalie Jessica Moffat. OSU tallied 13 shots to UF’s six in the stanza.
Ohio State tied the game at 1-all early in the third period, as freshman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) scored her third goal of the season on a power-play, assisted by sophomore Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario) and junior Erin O’Grady (London, Ontario). Findlay’s Heidi Tallqvist followed with two goals at 12:18 and 13:06, respectively to take a 3-1 lead. The Buckeyes cut the Oilers lead to one, as Harrigan tipped in goal at 17:05. The Buckeye goal was assisted by O’Grady. OSU pulled its goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) with 1:35 remaining, to gain an extra skater. Despite outshooting Findlay 14-9 in the period, OSU could not score an additional goal. OSU goalie Glaser played 58:13 in net, recording 22 saves on 25 Oiler shots. UF’s Moffat played all 60 minutes, stopping 27-of-39 Buckeye chances.
Each team was 1-for-4 on the power play in the game, as each squad assessed four penalties for eight minutes.
Ohio State will make its fifth consecutive appearance at the WCHA Final Five tournament March 12-14 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The bracket will be announced Sunday night following the conclusion of WCHA regular season action.
Notes – – The game marked the final meeting between Ohio State and Findlay, as Findlay’s administration announced earlier this year it is cutting both men’s and women’s hockey programs. The Buckeyes led the all-time series 6-3-0. – Findlay clinched its first Ohio Cup victory in the four-year history of the competition. OSU had won the trophy three consecutive seasons. – Two Buckeyes enter the WCHA Final Five on a three-game points streak. Senior Erin O’Grady has recorded two goals and two assists in the last three games, while sophomore Jana Harrigan has recorded two goals and three assists.
