COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team wrapped up the 2003 season with its annual awards banquet, Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at the football recruiting room in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes handed out seven individual awards to celebrate their most successful season ever, which included a 13-5-3 overall record and a 4-3-3 mark in the Big Ten. Ohio State also made a second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, defeating Dayton 3-0 in the first round before falling to West Virginia 3-0 in the second round.
Among those receiving awards for their outstanding efforts throughout the season was OSU scholar-athlete and co-captain Erica Nollen (Jr., West Chester, Ohio), who earned the 2003 Most Valuable Player Award. Nollen anchored a defense that allowed just 17 goals in 21 matches, which calculated to a 0.77 goals against average, an Ohio State all-time season low. Assisting Nollen to solidify Ohio State’s defense this season was Melissa Miller (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), who took home defensive MVP honors. Miller was named to both the 2003 NSCAA All-America and All-Big Ten teams.
Receiving the offensive MVP honor was junior forward Kathy Fulk (Dublin, Ohio). In her first season with the Buckeyes, Fulk tallied five goals, four assists and 12 points to place second in scoring behind teammate Colleen Hoban (So., Strongsville, Ohio).
Freshman forward Audra Jones (Columbus, Ohio) reaped Most Improved Player honors as she saw action in four games for the Buckeyes.
Junior defender Jen Heaney (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned the Coaches Award for her significant sacrifices for the program and her great late season play, while Emily Gilbert (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) merited the Elisa S. Hamilton Gift of Fury for her outstanding and spirited effort in 2003.
The Buckeyes also presented freshman Emily Francis (Paris, Ohio) with the Fiery Buckeye Award, given to the team’s top freshman.
