COLUMBUS, Ohio– The fencing squad, 56-7 overall, travels to the Midwest Conference Championship March 6-7 hosted by Notre Dame at the Joyce Center Field House in South Bend, Ind. The No. 5 men’s team posts a 30-5 record this season and the No. 2 women hold a 26-2 mark in season duals. At the 2003 Midwest Championship, the Buckeyes finished first overall as the men placed first and the women finished second, just five points behind Notre Dame.

THE NAZLYMOV FILE
Vladimir Nazlymov, fifth year Ohio State head coach, guided his Buckeyes to a fourth place finish last season at the NCAA Championship. The men’s team concluded the season with a 21-2 overall record, while the women finished with a 20-2 mark. Nazlymov owns a 185-68 career dual meet record at Ohio State. He has garnered national and international recognition in the fencing arena, including 1999 National Coach of the Year and 2000-01 U.S. National Team Captain.
2003 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Buckeyes finished first overall with 855 points at the 2003 Midwest Championships. The men placed first with a score of 435 and the women (420 points) finshed a close second behind Notre Dame (425).
Junior Louise Bond-Williams finished first women’s sabre. Sophomore Adam Crompton finished second in men’s sabre followed by senior Colin Parker who received the fifth spot. In men’s foil, sophomore Alexander Law finished fifth while junior Brian Gross placed third in men’s epee.
On the women’s side senior Alexandra Shklar took third in women’s epee, junior Metta Thompson placed fifth in women’s foil and sophomore Marguerite Plekhanov captured third in women’s sabre.
LAST TIME OUT
The men’s squad finished first overall at the Duke Invitational Feb. 6 in Durham, N.C. With a total score of 84 in the three events, the Buckeyes surpassed Brandeis by nine points. Ohio State took first in epee and foil and finished fourth in sabre competition.
The squad went 4-1 in dual meet action as they defeated North Carolina, 17-10, Brandeis, 16-11, Duke, 17-10 and Johns Hopkins, 21-6. Their only loss at the invitational came in a tight 14-13 decision against MIT. Ohio State came through 7-2 in foil competition and fell 7-2 in sabre and 5-4 in epee.
WOMEN IMPROVE AT CSU DUALS
The women’s squad went undefeated Feb. 7 at the Cleveland State Duals in Cleveland, Ohio. The Buckeyes closed out regular season dual action with a 26-2 mark. The women defeated Detroit, 18-6, Michigan, 17-10, Michigan State, 17-10 and Wayne State, 18-9.
On the men’s side, the Buckeyes went 2-2 at the event with wins over Detroit and Michigan State. Their losses came against Michigan, 14-13 and Wayne State, 15-12.
THE NOTRE DAME DUALS
The Buckeyes competed at the Notre Dame Duals Jan. 31 through Feb. 1 in South Bend, Ind. The men’s squad went 8-1 at the event and suffered a 15-12 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame. On the women’s side, the team went 7-2 in dual match competition as they fell to No. 1-ranked Notre Dame and No. 5 Northwestern.
A GLANCE AT THE NYU DUALS
Ohio State competed against New York, St. John’s, Stanford, Columbia and Yale Jan. 25 at the New York University Duals in New York, N.Y.
On the men’s side, Ohio State was victorious over NYU, 15-12, Stanford, 20-7 and Yale, 18-9. Their only loss came against St. John’s, where the Buckeyes fell in sabre competition, 6-3 and in foil, 5-4.
The women dominated Stanford, 24-3, and NYU, 21-6. They surpassed St. John’s, Columbia and Yale, 17-10.
BUCKEYES DOMINATE NORTHWESTERN DUALS
Ohio State competed at the Northwestern Duals Nov. 14-16 in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes were undefeated as the men’s team went 6-0 and the women captured four wins.
The men defeated Michigan, 26-1, Detroit-Mercy, 27-0, Mighigan State, 27-0, Lawrence 27-0, North Carolina, 27-0 and Johns Hopkins, 25-2. The Buckeyes suffered just one individual loss to the Wolverines, that coming in sabre competition and fell, 7-2, to Johs Hopkins in foil.
On the women’s side, they saw victories over Lawrence, 27-0, Fairleigh Dickinson, 23-4, Temple, 22-5 and North Carolina, 22-5.
RECAP OF THE OSU DUALS
The Buckeyes hosted the OSU Duals Nov. 1 at the French Field House in Columbus, Ohio. Both squads reigned supreme and finished the meet undefeated with six victories.
The men dominated all seven teams they faced, including Bowling Green, 25-2, Cleveland State, 26-1, Case Western Reserve, 26-1, Chicago, 26-1, Michigan State, 23-4, Northwestern, 26-1 and Purdue, 23-4.
On the women’s side, Ohio State defeated Bowling Green, 27-0, Cleveland State, 27-0, Case Western Reserve, 26-1, Chicago, 27-0, Michigan State, 26-1, Northwestern, 20-7 and Purdue, 26-1.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Buckeyes are back in action next weekend, March 13 at the Regional Championship in Evanston, Ill. Ohio State will wrap up season play March 25-28 at the NCAA Championship hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass.
