Men’s Hockey Falls in Overtime to Wisconsin, 1-0, in NCAA Regional Semifinal – Ohio State Buckeyes

ALBANY, N.Y. – Wisconsin’s Dan Boeser scored 12:03 into overtime to lift the Badgers to a 1-0 victory over No. 2 seed Ohio State in the NCAA East Regional semifinal Friday at Pepsi Arena. The No. 3 seed Badgers advance to play No. 1 seed Maine in the regional semifinal for a berth in the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four.
No. 6 ranked Ohio State, the CCHA Mason Cup champion, ends its season with a 26-16-0 record, tied for the third-highest win total in program history.
The teams skated scoreless through the first three periods, the first time in NCAA tournament history a game had no goals scored through regulation. Wisconsin outshot the Buckeyes in the first period, 13-6; five of the Badgers’ shots came on the power play in the stanza. UW was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
In the second, Ohio State had the edge in shots, 8-7. OSU could not score on two power-play chances and held UW scoreless on one chance.
The third saw the teams play cautiously, as OSU put six shots on net and UW had three. The Buckeyes stopped the Badgers on two power-play chances, while OSU was 0-for-1.
The overtime saw more action, with Ohio State outshooting UW, 8-6. The Buckeyes had a power-play chance, but were unable to convert. The Badgers won the game when Dan Boeser put in the rebound of a Robbie Earl shot at the 12:03 mark of the first extra stanza.
Buckeye goalie Dave Caruso stopped 28-of-29 Badger shots, while Bernd Bruckler recorded the shutout for UW with 28 saves. Ohio State hit the post twice in the game, while the Badgers saw one shot hit the pipe.
Postgame Notes
This is the second year in a row Ohio State lost in the opening round of the NCAA tournament by a 1-0 score. Boston College topped the Buckeyes in Providence last season.
The game was Ohio State’s third overtime game in the last four outings. OSU went 2-1 in the contests, with overtime wins over Notre Dame and Miami at the CCHA Super Six.
This marked the fourth 1-0 game in NCAA tournament history; Ohio State has been a part of two.
Nine Buckeyes seniors ended their career with the loss to the Badgers – goalies Mike Betz and Kelly Holowaty, defensemen Doug Andress and Reed Whiting and forwards Daymen Bencharski, Paul Caponigri, Scott May, Chris Olsgard and Dave Steckel.
