Ohio State Fencing Gears Up For Regional Competition – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– The fencing squad, coming off a first place finish at the Midwest Conference Championships March 6, sends 18 student-athletes for competition March 14 at the Regional Championships in Evanston, Ill. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with competition including all three weapons.
The Nazlymov File
Vladimir Nazlymov, fifth year Ohio State head coach, guided his Buckeyes to a fourth place finish last season at the NCAA Championship. The men’s team concluded the season with a 21-2 overall record, while the women finished with a 20-2 mark. Nazlymov owns a 185-68 career dual meet record at Ohio State. He has garnered national and international recognition in the fencing arena, including 1999 National Coach of the Year and 2000-01 U.S. National Team Captain.

2003 Regional Championships
The Buckeyes qualified 12 student-athletes, the maximum number of team competitors, at the 2003 Regional Championships hosted by Ohio State. Sophomore Adam Crompton and junior Louise Bond-Williams each placed first in men’s and women’s sabre competition.
Ohio State Takes 1st
Ohio State claimed the Midwest Conference title placing first overall with 1030 points March 6. The men’s squad, which combined for 540 points, edged out top-ranked Notre Dame (475) by 65 points. On the women’s side, the Buckeyes topped the Fighting Irish (485) by just five points and Northwestern (475) by 15. Ohio State’s performance in the competition led them to a combined overall first place finish to knock off defending national champion Notre Dame.
Four Buckeyes Capture Titles
Adam Crompton, undefeated with 22 victories this season, defeated Notre Dame’s Patrick Ghattas, 15-6, in the final round of sabre competition at the Conference Championships. Louise Bond-Williams claimed her third-consecutive women’s sabre title after taking a 15-8 decision over Notre Dame’s Valerie Providenza in finals action. Bond-Williams holds a 33-1 record this season. Boaz Ellis, 37-1, took the No. 1 spot in foil competition and Hanna Thompson captured the women’s foil title.
The Duke Invitational
The men’s squad finished first overall at the Duke Invitational Feb. 6 in Durham, N.C. With a total score of 84 in the three events, the Buckeyes surpassed Brandeis by nine points. Ohio State took first in epee and foil and finished fourth in sabre competition.
The squad went 4-1 in dual meet action as they defeated North Carolina, 17-10, Brandeis, 16-11, Duke, 17-10 and Johns Hopkins, 21-6. Their only loss at the invitational came in a tight 14-13 decision against MIT.
Women Improve at CSU Duals
The women’s squad went undefeated Feb. 7 at the Cleveland State Duals in Cleveland, Ohio. The Buckeyes closed out regular season dual action with a 26-2 mark. The women defeated Detroit, 18-6, Michigan, 17-10, Michigan State, 17-10 and Wayne State, 18-9.
On the men’s side, the Buckeyes went 2-2 at the event with wins over Detroit and Michigan State. Their losses came against Michigan, 14-13 and Wayne State, 15-12.
The Notre Dame Duals
The Buckeyes competed at the Notre Dame Duals Jan. 31 through Feb. 1 in South Bend, Ind. The men’s squad went 8-1 at the event and suffered a 15-12 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame. On the women’s side, the team went 7-2 in dual match competition as they fell to No. 1-ranked Notre Dame and No. 5 Northwestern.
A Glance at the NYU Duals
Ohio State competed against New York, St. John’s, Stanford, Columbia and Yale Jan. 25 at the New York University Duals in New York, N.Y.
On the men’s side, Ohio State was victorious over NYU, 15-12, Stanford, 20-7 and Yale, 18-9. Their only loss came against St. John’s, where the Buckeyes fell in sabre competition, 6-3 and in foil, 5-4.
The women dominated Stanford, 24-3, and NYU, 21-6. They surpassed St. John’s, Columbia and Yale, 17-10.
Northwestern Duals
Ohio State competed at the Northwestern Duals Nov. 14-16 in Evanston, Ill. The Buckeyes were undefeated as the men’s team went 6-0 and the women captured four wins.
The men defeated Michigan, 26-1, Detroit-Mercy, 27-0, Mighigan State, 27-0, Lawrence 27-0, North Carolina, 27-0 and Johns Hopkins, 25-2. The Buckeyes suffered just one individual loss to the Wolverines, that coming in sabre competition.
On the women’s side, they saw victories over Lawrence, 27-0, Fairleigh Dickinson, 23-4, Temple, 22-5 and North Carolina, 22-5.
Recap of the OSU Duals
The Buckeyes hosted the OSU Duals Nov. 1 in Columbus, Ohio. Both squads reigned supreme and finished the meet undefeated with six wins.
The men dominated all seven teams they faced, including Bowling Green, 25-2, Cleveland State, 26-1, Case Western Reserve, 26-1, Chicago, 26-1, Michigan State, 23-4, Northwestern, 26-1 and Purdue, 23-4.
On the women’s side, Ohio State defeated Bowling Green, 27-0, Cleveland State, 27-0, Case Western Reserve, 26-1, Chicago, 27-0, Michigan State, 26-1, Northwestern, 20-7 and Purdue, 26-1.
Looking Ahead
Ohio State will wrap up season play March 25-28 at the NCAA Championship hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Last season, the Buckeyes finished fourth overall.
