Ohio State men’s tennis juniors Scott Green (North Canton,Ohio/Hoover) and Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis deSales) captured the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor titleSunday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The OSU tandem, the No. 1 seed of thetournament, defeated the No. 2 seed Stanford’s KC Corkery and SamWarburg, 8-5, in the championship match. This is thesecond-consecutive national doubles title for Green and Wilson. Thepair claimed the ITA All-American title Oct. 10 and are undefeatedin fall tournament action with a 9-0 record. They are the firstdoubles team to capture both the ITA All-American title and theNational Indoors title in the same season since 1992-93 and onlythe third team in NCAA history. The OSU tandem, ranked No. 34 inthe September preseason polls, captured the ITA National SummerChampionship in August. A win at the ITA National Indoors would beGreen and Wilson’s third consecutive national title and secondnational crown of the 2004-05 season. The Buckeye squad is back onthe courts in fall tournament play Saturday-Monday at the Big TenSingles Championship in Chicago, Ill. Women’s soccer freshman LaraDickenmann was named outstanding offensive player of the 2004 BigTen Tournament Sunday after leading the Buckeyes to their secondleague postseason crown in the last three seasons. The native ofKreins, Switzerland scored both goals in the 2-0 blanking of No. 3Penn State in the championship match Sunday. She also accounted forboth goals in Ohio State’s 2-0 win over Purdue in the quarterfinalThursday. In the 5-2 semifinal win over Michigan Friday, Dickenmannadded a pair of assists.
For the season, Dickenmann, who also was named 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, has set OSU single-season records with 12 goals, 10 assists and 34 points. She is responsible for five game-winning tallies this season.
Athletics Good Stuff
The No. 8-ranked Ohio State women’s soccer team (16-3-3) wonits second Big Ten tournament title in the last three seasons andlocked up its third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament witha 2-0 victory over No. 3 Penn State Sunday at Jesse Owens MemorialStadium. Lara Dickenmann, who was named most outstanding offensiveplayer of the tournament, netted both Ohio State scores in thesecond half to help the Buckeyes continue their undefeated seasonat home at 12-0-1.
Ohio State will look to keep that unbeaten streak alive this weekend as it plays host to the first and second rounds of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes, who earned a No. 6 seed, will be one of 16 host schools and will welcome Bowling Green, Detroit and Big Ten foe Michigan to Columbus. Ohio State and Bowling Green will meet in the first round match at 7 p.m. Friday. Detroit and Michigan will face-off in the first match Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winning teams from each match will play in the second round at 1 p.m. Sunday. Bowling Green and Detroit earned automatic bids by winning their respective conference tournaments. Michigan received an at-large berth after a third-place finish in the Big Ten regular season.

Sunday, the Buckeyes shutdown the Big Ten’s leading attack in Penn State and the 2004 Big Ten Player of the Year Tiffany Weimer. The Ohio State backline limited the Nittany Lions to five shots, including just one strike from Weimer.
The Buckeyes earned a spot in the title match with a quarterfinal win Thursday over Purdue, 2-0, and a 5-2 victory over Michigan Friday in the tourney semifinal round. Against Michigan, the Buckeyes struck early and often as Danielle Dietrich and Melissa Miller combined with a Wolverine own goal to take a 3-0 lead nearly 21 minutes into the match. The Buckeyes continued to attack in the second half as Lisa Grubb and Colleen Hoban added goals in a 55-second span in the 50th and 51st minutes.
In the quarterfinal vs. Purdue, Dickenmann netted a pair of goals in the first half, lifting the Buckeyes to a 2-0 victory. The win over Purdue gave head coach Lori Walker her 100th career victory.
The men’s soccer team won a share of its first Big Ten regularseason championship with a 2-0 win at Michigan last Saturday,giving the Buckeyes a 5-1-0 league record and 15 points, which tiesIndiana for the regular season crown. Ohio State is 10-5-2 overalland ranked in the Top 25 of each of the four national polls. Seniorcaptain Justin Cook was named the national player of the week byCollege Soccer News and was also named the Big Ten offensive playerof the week, while Buckeye junior goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. wasnamed the conferences’ defensive player of the week. Cook finishedthe league season as the Big Ten’s top scorer with six goals and anassist for 13 points, while Burse was the top goalkeeper with a0.33 goals-against average and four shutouts.
Ohio State will return to Michigan this week for the Big Ten tournament, where the Buckeyes will carry the No. 2 seed against the seventh-seeded Wolverines Thursday in a quarterfinal match. The semifinals are Friday and the championship game is Sunday. The NCAA will announce its 48-member tournament field Monday at 4 p.m. live on ESPNews.
The men’s basketball team opens the 2004-05 season Tuesday withan exhibition game against Northern Kentucky University. Tipoff is7:05 p.m. at Value City Arena. The game will be the firstcompetition for first-year head coach Thad Matta, his staff andseveral new Buckeyes. Junior college transfer Je’Kel Foster alongwith freshmen Jamar Butler and Matt Terwilliger will see the courtfor the first time as Buckeyes. The regular season opens Nov. 15 inthe first round of the Guardians Classic. The Buckeyes play thesecond game that day against Towson (8:05 p.m.). The event getsunderway at 5:30 p.m. with a game between Robert Morris and MorganState. The winners and losers from the first day of action returnthe following day. Women’s volleyball defeated Iowa (3-0) and lostto No. 5 Minnesota (3-1) in road matches last week. Theeighth-ranked Buckeyes are currently tied for first place in theBig Ten with Penn State. Ohio State hosts Northwestern Friday andWisconsin Saturday this week. Stacey Gordon, with 21 kills at Iowaand 27 at Minnesota, extended her streak of double-figure killmatches to 100 and has 113 in 115 career matches. AgainstMinnesota, Rebecca Kastein recorded 19 digs to equal her careerhigh. Ami Stevens added 17 digs against the Gophers for her careerhigh. The No. 13 men’s hockey team plays host to CCHA opponentNorthern Michigan for two games this weekend. The Buckeyes andWildcats will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday and at 2:05 p.m. Sunday inValue City Arena. OSU (7-3 overall) enters the weekend tied forfirst place in the CCHA with a 5-1 ledger.
Ohio State is coming off a two-game sweep of Sacred Heart by 5-1 and 7-1 scores. Freshman forward Tom Fritsche was named the CCHA Rookie of the Week after posting a combined seven assists in the two games. Other top performers against the Pioneers included Dan Knapp, who had his second career hat trick Saturday, Domenic Maiani who had a career-best three assists and points Friday and added two more points Saturday and Rod Pelley and John Dingle, who both scored in each contest. The Buckeyes set a Value City Arena record with five power-play goals Saturday.
The No. 9 women’s basketball team opens its season with anexhibition vs. Australian Institute of Sport at 7 p.m. Wednesdaynight in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes will be part of the 2004Preseason Women’s National Invitational Tournament and face BowlingGreen at 7 p.m. Friday night at Value City Arena in first-roundaction. If the Buckeyes beat Bowling Green, game two will be at 2p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena vs. the winner of the SaintJoseph’s/Boston University contest. The semifinals are Nov. 17 andthe finals are either Nov. 20 or 21. Game sites and times after thefirst two rounds are contingent upon the Buckeyes winning andattendance at the first two games. The field of 16 for the 2004Preseason WNIT includes three teams from last season’s Top 25 andnine 2004 postseason participants, including Ohio State, Duke,Notre Dame, Nebraska and Arizona. The women’s ice hockey teamskicks off a four-game homestand this weekend when the Buckeyes playhost to Northeastern at 2:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the OSUIce Rink. The home series marks OSU’s first non-conference opponentthis season. The Buckeyes and Huskies will be meeting for theseventh and eighth times in program history. Northeastern holds a3-2-1 advantage over Ohio State in the all-time series. Ohio Statehas not faced Northeastern in Columbus since OSU’s inaugural seriesOct. 8-9, 1999, in which the Huskies won both games.
Sophomore defenseman Tessa Bonhomme is competing in the 2004 Four Nations Cup for the Canadian National Team Nov. 10-14. The event marks her first international contest after being named to the roster Oct. 20.
The field hockey team upset Penn State, 3-2, in the first roundof the 2004 Big Ten Tournament. Before falling to No.1 seedMichigan, the eventual Big Ten champion, in the semifinals. OSUmade its eighth consecutive appearance in the semifinal round. TheBuckeyes concluded the 2004 season 10-10 overall and 2-6 in the BigTen.
Midfielder Lauren Kruse and goalie Lindsay Williams were named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team following their performances in the tournament. Kruse scored two goals, while Williams recorded 16 saves on the weekend. Two Buckeyes received 2004 All-Big Ten Team accolades last Thursday at the banquet. Sophomore forward Curlyne Wynn was named to the first team and sophomore midfielder Saskia Mueller was named to the second team.
The women’s golf team closed its fall season with aseventh-place ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.After four tournaments, four Buckeyes sit in the Top 5 in thePerformance Index among Big Ten players. Senior Lindsay Knowltonclaimed the No. 1 spot followed by teammate Kristen White at No. 2.Dana Je and Jennifer Selfinger are ranked fourth and fifth,respectively, among conference players. Knowlton led Ohio Statewith a 72.5 stroke average during fall play. The rifle team droppeda 4,496 to 4,467 decision against Rose Hulman Sunday. OSU’s RyanKohatsu took top honors scoring 592 in smallbore rifle, 590 in airrifle and 1,182 in the two-gun aggregate. The rifle team will hostMorehead State Nov. 21. The pistol team remained undefeated with a5,084 to 4,409 victory against Purdue. OSU’s Derek Dice took firstplace in free pistol with a 241 score. Freshman Teresa Meyer wonthe standard pistol (529) and air pistol (550) and captured thethree-gun aggregate title with a score of 1,310. Pistol returns toaction Jan. 15-16 when they host defending national collegiatechampion, the U.S. Naval Academy. Coming off of two wins to openthe season last week, the men’s swimming and diving team willtravel to Louisville, Ky., Friday for a 5 p.m. double-dual meetagainst Louisville and West Virginia. The Buckeyes opened theseason last week with a 139-97 road win at Miami (Ohio) beforereturning to the Mike Peppe Aquatic Center Saturday, when it beatCincinnati 153-97. The Buckeyes were led by senior Tommy Seay, whowon four events in the two meets. Rob Kauscher won three events.Diver Mitch Richeson won the 1-meter event against Miami as theBuckeyes took the top two spots. Ohio State went 1-2-3 in the3-meter event. The women’s swimming and diving team will meet theMichigan Wolverines Friday at 5 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich., beforereturning to Columbus to swim against Miami (Ohio) at 1 p.m. at theMike Peppe Aquatic Center. The Buckeyes claimed a 167-92 victoryover Cincinnati this past Saturday. Griet Buelens won the 100- and1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and was on the winning800-yard freestyle relay. Buelens also met the NCAA B time in the200-yard fly with a time of 2:01.76, only 1.76 seconds off the poolrecord. Nicole Maglich won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyleevents, while Rebekah Rychvalsky won the 100- and 200-yardbreaststroke.
