COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Maurice Carter scored 22 points and had key baskets in three runs to lead Robert Morris to a 68-49 win over Morgan State on Monday night in the first round of the Guardians Classic.
The Colonials (1-0) advance to play Ohio State in the second round on Tuesday night at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes beat Towson 74-53 in a first round game Monday night.
Joseph Ison added 14 points and Chaz McCrommon had 10 for the Colonials.
Timothy Mathis led Morgan State (0-1) with 11 points.
Down 14-11 midway through the first half, Robert Morris went on a 10-0 run with Carter and McCrommon each scoring four points and Ison adding two free throws.
After the Bears pulled to 24-20, the Colonials again scored 10 in a row to close the half with Carter capping the surge with a 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining.
Morgan State cut the lead to a point on Alfonso Evans’ layup with 15:20 left, but Carter hit a 3-pointer, Derek Coleman had a 3-pointer and two free throws and Ison made a pair of foul shots to push the lead to 46-35 with 12:28 left. The lead never dropped below double figures again.
