Ohio State Notes
Ohio State opened its 106th season of men’s basketball tonightagainst Towson. The Buckeyes are 83-23 all-time in season openersand are 87-19 in home openers. Head coach Thad Matta made hisofficial Ohio State debut tonight and is 3-0 when making hiscoaching debuts. At Butler, Matta defeated Eastern Illinois 90-73in 2000 and Coastal Carolina 72-41 while coaching for Xavier in2001. Ohio State’s 13 coaches are 10-3 in their first games at thehelm of the Buckeye men’s basketball program. The freshmen trio ofJamar Butler, Jermyl Jackson-Wilson and Matt Terwilliger and juniorJe’Kel Foster officially made their Ohio State debuts tonightagainst the Tigers. Ohio State is 2-0 all-time against Towson. TheBuckeyes also claimed a 99-79 victory in the first round of the1991 NCAA Tournament. Ohio State junior Terence Dials recorded acareer-high 23 points tonight against the Tigers. His previouscareer-high was 22, which he did twice. The last was againstIndiana on March 3, 2004. Junior forward Matt Sylvester set acareer-high in assists with five against Towson. His perviouspersonal-best was three, against Georgia Tech on March 19, 2003.The Buckeyes went on a 9-2 run to open the second half. The largestlead for Ohio State was 28 points with 4:21 remaining in the game.
Towson Notes
Towson opened its 26th season of Division I men’s basketballtonight against the Buckeyes. The Tigers are 10-16 in theirDivision I openers. It also marked the first time Towson opened itsseason against a Big Ten opponent. The Tigers faced its first BigTen opponent since Michigan in 2000 when they dropped a 73-71decision to the Wolverines. Towson is winless (0-7) against Big Tenopponents. Towson went 15-of-15 from the charity stripe against theBuckeyes for a perfect 1.000 percentage to set a Value City Arenarecord. Indiana set the previous record Jan. 20, 2004. The Hoosiersrecorded a .880 percentage, connecting on 22-of-25 shots.
