Ohio State Postgame Notes
Sunday marked the first meeting between Texas Tech and OhioState in men’s basketball. With the loss Sunday, Ohio State fallsto 19-22 all-time against teams from the Big 12 conference. The80-72 loss Sunday snapped an overall three-game win streak for OhioState.
The Buckeyes’ five-game winning streak as a home team and four-game win streak at Value City Arena also came to an end with the loss. The Buckeyes defeated Virginia Tech at Nationwide Arena in Columbus Dec. 6 and had followed with four-straight at VCA.
The loss to the Red Raiders also served as the second thisseason at home against a non-conference opponent. Ohio Statedropped a 73-53 loss to Georgia Tech earlier this season Dec. 3,marking the first time a Buckeye team has lost two non-conferencegames in the same season in the five-year history of Value CityArena. The Buckeyes scored 70 points in the contest Sunday, markingthe fifth time this season Ohio State has scored at least 70 pointsin a game. With the 80-72 loss, Ohio State dropped to 4-1 whenscoring 70-plus. The loss also dropped Ohio State’s record to 85-20under head coach Jim O’Brien when scoring at least 70 points.O’Brien has sent different starting lineups to the court in fiveconsecutive games. For the year, the combination of Terence Dials,Velimir Radinovic, Tony Stockman, Nick Dials and J.J. Sullinger isthe seventh different Buckeye starting lineup used this season. Thesellout crowd of 19,200 saw the Buckeyes suffer just its sixth lossat VCA when the game is sold out. Ohio State drops to 21-6 in suchgames after the 80-72 loss. Ohio State pulled down a season-best 26offensive rebounds against Texas Tech, leading to a 23-8 advantagein second chance points. The Buckeyes out-rebounded TTU 26-8 on theoffensive end. The previous high for Ohio State in the offensiverebound category was 15 set against Seton Hall Dec. 20. Despite a45-40 advantage in rebounds Sunday, Ohio State fell to 7-3 whenout-rebounding opponents this season.
The 45 rebounds served as a season-high by Ohio State. The Buckeyes pulled down 43 rebounds against Virginia Tech Dec. 6.
The Buckeyes also held a decided edge in turnovers (13-7) andpoints off turnovers with a 16-6 advantage. Ohio State fired aseason-high 79 field goal attempts Sunday, including a season-most23 3-point field goal attempts. The previous high for Ohio State infield goal attempt was 57 against Furman, while the prior high in3-point attempts was 18 against Virginia Tech. The Buckeyesconverted 8-of-23 3-point field goals attempts, which tied aseason-best for made treys and established a new season-high forattempts. OSU previously hit eight 3-point baskets againstDartmouth Dec. 28.
Ohio State connected on five 3-point field goals in the first half, with four separate Buckeyes accounting for the five makes. The effort marked the second time this season four separate Buckeyes have made 3-point field goals.
Texas Tech’s one 3-point make on three attempts both served asseason-lows for an opponent against Ohio State. The previous lowwas posted by UMBC with three makes in Ohio State’s last game Dec.30. Over the last two games, Ohio State has held its opponents tojust four 3-point baskets on 11 attempts. Ohio State held a 37-33advantage at halftime, marking the fourth straight game theBuckeyes entered the intermission owning the lead. With the loss,Ohio State suffered its first loss in eight contests when leadingat the half (7-1) this season. Ohio State held Texas Tech scorelessover the first 3:52 of the game. The Buckeyes held the lead theentire first half and the first 1:25 of the second half before a6-0 Texas Tech run helped the Red Raiders tie the game at 37-37 atthe 18:35mark and claim its first lead 39-37 at the 17:59 mark ofthe second half.
The Buckeye held the lead the entire first half, but saw the score tied on six separate occasions in the second half, with three lead changes also coming in the second period.
With the loss, Ohio State’s record on Jan. 4 fell to 11-10. Theloss to TTU is the fourth straight on this date. In it’s sixthseason in Value City Arena, Ohio State is now 74-15, including a4-2 mark at home this season.
Ohio State Player Notes
Ohio State freshman guard Nick Dials scored nine points in thefirst half, tying his career-high set against Eastern Illinois.Dials ended the game with a career-best 15 points.
Dials converted on 4-of-4 free throw attempts in the game, extending his current streak of 11 straight made free throws.
Dials also recorded his third straight game with three assists and the third game in the last four where he has connected on at least three 3-point attempts. Dials upped his assist-to-turnover ratio to 14-4.
The freshman guard also grabbed a career-best five rebounds in a career-high 34 minutes.
Senior center Velimir Radinovic grabbed a season-high sixoffensive rebounds Sunday as a part of a season-best overallrebounding effort with eight total caroms.
Five other Buckeyes had at least three offensive rebounds as Terence Dials and Shun Jenkins grabbed four, while J.J. Sullinger, Nick Dials and Uga Nwankwo each collected three. The three offensive boards for Nwankwo were the first of his career.
T. Dials also tied Radinovic for a game-best eight rebounds, while Jenkins pulled down seven.
Radinovic scored eight points in the game, all coming in the second half.
Ohio State guard Ugo Nwanko scored a career-high nine pointsSunday, topping his previous best of six set in Ohio State’s lastouting against UMBC Dec. 30, 2003.
Nwankwo also set career-bests in field goals with four and field goal attempts (7) and rebounds with four.
Ohio State junior guard Tony Stockman recorded 10 points Sundaynight, marking his 11th game this season scoring double figures inpoints.
