BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Ohio State senior forward Dave Steckel had a three-point night, on a goal and two assists, to lead the No. 15 Ohio State men’s hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Bowling Green Saturday at BGSU Ice Arena in a CCHA game. The win gives the Buckeyes a two-game sweep of the Falcons in the regular season series, after a 7-0 victory, Nov. 29, 2003, also in Bowling Green.
The win improves the Buckeyes’ record to 16-12-0 and 11-9-0 in the CCHA. The Falcons fall to 7-14-6 and 5-11-3 in league play.
The Falcons got on the board just 1:15 into the game, as Mark Wires converted a Brett Pilkington pass from right in front of the net. Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) tied the game less than two minutes later (2:49), putting in the rebound of a Tyson Strachan (Fr., Melfort, Saskatchewan) shot from the side of the net. Scott May (Sr., Surrey, British Columbia) had the second assist on the goal, as he got the puck to Strachan at the point for the initial shot. Andrew Schembri (Fr., Mississauga, Ontario) gave Ohio State the lead with a power-play goal at 19:08, taking a Doug Andress (Sr., Iroquois Falls, Ontario) pass and skating into the Falcon zone before cutting in front of the crease and sliding the puck under goalie Bob Frazee. Frazee replaced starter Jordan Sigalet just under midway through the period, as Sigalet was injured. OSU outshot the Falcons in the period, 6-3.
Chris Olsgard (Sr., Seattle, Wash.) put the Buckeyes up by two (3-1) with a goal at the 7:42 mark of the second period. Olsgard converted a Bryce Anderson (Fr., Waterloo, Iowa) pass for the score, as JB Bittner (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) also assisted on the play. OSU put 17 shots on net in the period, while BGSU had eight.
The Falcons’ Rich Meloche cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one with a goal at 9:36 of the third. Thomas Welsh (Jr., Regina, Saskatchewan) regained the two-goal lead for Ohio State with a goal just over five minutes later (14:49), assisted by Steckel and May. The goal was Welsh’s first of the year and his first since Nov. 2, 2001 vs. Nebraska-Omaha. The Falcons again cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one on a Steve Brudzewski goal at 16:39. His goal came on the power play (BGSU’s ninth of the game) with the Falcons’ goalie also pulled, giving the Falcons a 6-on-4 advantage. OSU outshot the Falcons in the period, 7-6.
Betz ended the game with 14 saves on 17 BGSU shots. Sigalet stopped one shot and allowed one goal in 10:05 before being replaced by Frazee. Frazee ended the game with 25 saves on 28 shots in 48:49. OSU outshot BGSU in the game, 30-17.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-7 on the power play in the game and stopped the Falcons on 8-of-9 chances.
Ohio State will return to action with a two-game series at Ferris State. The Buckeyes and Bulldogs will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
