Ohio State scored the only goal of the opening period, as Paul Caponigri (Sr., Oak Park, Ill.) scored on the power-play. Doug Andress (Sr., Iroquios Falls, Ontario) took a shot from the left point and Dave Steckel (Sr., West Bend, Wis.) deflected it from right in front of the net to Caponigri at the right side, who put it into the empty net as LSSU goalie Jeff Jakaitis failed to cover the right side of the net. Each team had 10 shots on goal in the period. OSU scored on its one power-play chance and held the Lakers scoreless on two opportunities.
In the second, the Lakers tied the game with a power-play goal of their own, as Bo Cheesman tallied 3:09 into the period. Postgame Quotes
Lake Superior State head coach Frank Anzalone
On his team’s goaltending
“You need good goaltending to win. Our goaltending was a little average this weekend. Until our goaltending improves it is going to be difficult to play teams like Ohio State.
“It is difficult against teams like Oho State, especially on the road. OSU did a good job, but I think some of their goals were stoppable.”
Ohio State head coach John Markell
On the game
“I’m happy we got the four points and I’m happy for the guys we got four points. That’s where the happiness ends. Last night we did a good job with effort and execution and tonight there was effort but within 24 hours the execution failed. You can’t go anywhere in this league unless you execute every night. I was upset with the attitude. We came in and thought it would be like last night. Now we have to go back to the drawing board.
“We have to have clean wins and no shortcuts. You have to give Lake Superior State credit. They played a great game and would have liked a better outcome. They played with a lot of heart. We have to be more consistent. I think we can play a better game but they have to be taught how to win.”
On the play of the Buckeye freshmen
“They are making additions to the team and are really learning under the gun. They are a part of the team and like everyone else have to continue to improve. Christmas is over and they have to play like upperclassmen.”
Ohio State junior captain JB Bittner
On the game
“A lot of guys said their legs were tired tonight. We have had the problem all year of being able to play two games. I think the work ethic was there tonight but we weren’t giving it the second effort like we were last night. Lake State played a lot harder tonight and I think that was half of it. You have to give credit to their effort.”
Ohio State freshman forward Andrew Schembri
On his two goals this weekend
“I have been more comfortable out there. I have started to get more patient and I feel like I have more time out there to make a play.”
