STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Marlon Smith scored 23 points to lead Penn State to a 64-47 win against Ohio State on Saturday.
A 14-2 run to open the second half put Penn State (8-5, 2-0 Big Ten) ahead by 13. Robert Summers scored six consecutive points to cap the stretch. Smith, a freshman, had three assists to go with his career-high scoring total. Summers finished with eight rebounds while Aaron Johnson came off the bench to score 12 and grab six rebounds.
Velmir Radinovic led the way for Ohio State (8-7, 0-2 Big Ten) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Buckeyes went to the free-throw line just eight times, compared to Penn State’s 32.
Penn State’s 2-0 Big Ten start is its best since it opened the 1995-96 season by going 4-0 in conference. The Nittany Lions shot 56.6 percent in the second half and scored 28 points off Ohio State turnovers in the game.
Ohio State led 26-25 at the end of the first half and was letting the clock run down so it could take the last shot. But before that could happen, Penn State’s Ben Luber stole the ball at the top of the key, ran the floor and had his lay-in goaltended, giving Penn State a one-point lead.
