Athletes of the Week
Women’s soccer forward Colleen Hoban netted two goals andassisted on two other scores as the Buckeyes (6-0-1, 0-0-1)remained unbeaten this weekend with a 1-1 draw vs. Iowa Friday anda 7-0 triumph over Youngstown State Sunday. On the season, Hobanleads the Buckeyes in scoring with 12 points on five goals and twoassists. Senior field hockey forward Vanessa Immordino (Sr.;Roseland, N.J.) was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Weekfor the week ending Sept. 21. Immordino was just one point shy ofher career game high of seven points, as she recorded six points (2goals and 2 assists) in the SMS contest. Immordino recorded theBuckeyes’ only two goals in the Louisville game Sept. 20 andtallied an additional two goals in the Ohio contest, including thegame winning overtime goal Sept. 16.

Brutus Buckeye is on of 12 mascots in the running for CapitalOne Mascot of the Year. Fans may vote for Brutus daily by visitinghttp://ohiostatebuckeyes.ocsn.com/genrel/brutus2003.html. Votingwill continue through Dec. 23. As of this morning, Brutus has aslim lead over “Cocky” the mascot from South Carolina. The No.12/24 women’s soccer team (6-0-1,0-0-1) solidified its finest startto a season in program history with a 1-1 tie last vs. Iowa in theBig Ten opener Friday and a dominating 7-0 victory over YoungstownState Sunday.
Ohio State held a 1-0 lead until the 87th minute of play on a Colleen Hoban goal before the Hawkeyes knotted the score at 1-1, sending the match to overtime. Neither team was able to muster a scoring attack in the extra sessions as the Buckeyes suffered their first blemish of the season.
Ohio State redeemed itself Sunday with a convincing 7-0 win over Youngstown State. Freshman Jackie Lafond netted two goals and assisted on one, while Hoban struck for the first goal of the match and added two assists in the Buckeyes fourth shutout in seven contests this season.
This week, the Buckeyes travel to Indiana Friday and Purdue Sunday.
The men’s hockey team opens the 2003-04 season with anexhibition game against Wilfrid Laurier at 7:05 p.m. Friday at OSUIce Arena. Admission is free and the first 1,000 fans will receivea free Baja Fresh burrito and Coke. There will be chances to winfree prizes and fans can meet the team in a postgame autographsession. The field hockey team ended the week 2-1, including anovertime win against Ohio, 3-2, Sept. 16. The Buckeyes are 12-5-1all-time against the Bobcats. OSU was unable to continue itswinning streak when it fell, 3-2, in overtime to No. 14 LouisvilleSept. 20. OSU dominated the Southwest Missouri State game, winning8-1. Five different Buckeyes contributed to the scoring frenzyagainst SMS, including three goals and two assists by midfielderLucy Clayton (Jr., Scarborough, England). Clayton’s eight points inthe SMS contest is a career game high. Forward Vanessa Immordino(Sr.; Roseland, N.J.) was named Big Ten Offensive Player of theWeek for recording 14 points in three games. The men’s golf teamfinished third in the Northern Intercollegiate this past weekend.Leading the way for the Buckeyes was senior Justin Collins, whofired a final round of one-over-par, 72 to finish the tournamentwith a three-round total of 218. The event was played at theUniversity of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. and will bethe site of the 2004 Big Ten Championships this spring. Up next,the Buckeyes travel to Dallas, Texas, Oct. 13-14 to compete in theSMU Invitational. The women’s golf team will compete in its secondtournament of the 2003-04 season as it plays host to the 2003 LadyNorthern Intercollegiate Sept. 27-28, at the Ohio State UniversityGolf Course, site of the 2004 Big Ten Championships. The event willfeature every team in the Big Ten plus Oklahoma, Texas and KentState. The men’s and women’s cross country team competed in theirsecond meet of the season this past Friday at the SpartanInvitational in East Lansing, Mich. site of the 2003 Big TenChampionships. During the non-team scoring event, the Buckeyesreceived strong performances from Brian Olinger on the men’s sideand Lindsay Gay on the women’s side. Olinger finished the second inthe men’s 8-kilometer race a time of 24:45.7, while Gay clocked atime of 21:50.5 in the women’s 6-kilometer race. Up next, the mentravel to Raleigh N.C., this Sept. 26 to compete in the 2003 GreatAmerican Cross Country Festival. The men’s soccer team will hostEvansville at 7:30 p.m. Friday before traveling to Wisconsin Sundayto begin Big Ten play. The Buckeyes, which boast the Big Ten’s bestdefense, tied Valparaiso last Friday, 0-0, and fell to DuquesneSunday, 1-0. Former Ohio State basketball standout Katie Smith, atwo-time All-American and three-time All-WNBA player for Minnesota,will be returning to Ohio State as a student assistant in thewomen’s basketball office. Smith, who will be taking classes inpreparation for application to dental school, will assist in thedaily operational aspects of the office, among otherresponsibilities. A four-time WNBA All-Star, she recently finishedher fifth season with the Lynx and averaged 18.2 points, 4.1rebounds and 2.5 assists per outing. Smith played at Ohio Statefrom 1992-96 and averaged 20.8 points per game on her way tobecoming the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer. As a freshman,Smith was a member of the Buckeye squad that made it to the NCAAFinal Four, losing in the finals to Texas Tech, 84-82. Women’svolleyball (6-2) opens Big Ten Conference play this weekend atMichigan Friday and Michigan State Saturday. Last week the Buckeyeswon at Miami (Ohio), 3-1 (22-30, 30-24, 30-17, 30-21) and defeatedBowling Green, 3-0 (30-26, 30-25, 30-27). OSU’s Stacey Gordon had23 kills and 11 digs against the RedHawks and added 19 kills and 14digs against the Falcons. She now ranks No. 3 on OSU career killslist with 1,448. Gordon needs 16 kills to move to the No. 2 spot.She also has moved to 20th in career aces with 100 and career digswith 861. For the two matches, Gordon averaged 6.00 kills, 3.57digs and 1.29 blocks per game. Last week the OSU outside hitter wasranked second in the country in kills per game at 6.32. Buckeyemiddle blocks D’wan Shackleford had a career-high nine blocks (2solos and 7 assists) in the Bowling Green match. In that match,setter Briana McCarthy recorded a career-high eight assist blocks.The women’s tennis team opened fall tournament play over theweekend and brought home two flight titles. Competing at the St.Mary’s Fall Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., Lindsey Adams (Jr./MercerIsland, Wash.) was victorious in the championship match in FlightSeven on the final day of competition at the tournament. Adamsdefeated Tanya Markovic of North Carolina in three sets to take thetitle. To reach the final Adams defeated Texas A&M’s SevaIwinski in the first round and Tennessee’s Erin Cohn in the secondround, both in three sets. Also over the weekend, Lindsay Williams(Sr./Beverly Hills, Mich.) and Sonia Ruzimovsky (Fr./Brooklyn,N.Y.) claimed the championship of Flight Two in the second day ofdoubles competition. In a close match that came down to atiebreaker Williams and Ruzimovsky defeated Roberta Spencer andLauren Walker of Texas A&M to win their flight. The squad willtravel to Philadelphia for the Cissie Leary Invitational thisweekend.
