OHIO STATE MATCHES BEST START IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Ohio State has jumped out to its most impressive start to a season in program history. OSU has celebrated its 10th anniversary season in grand fashion as the Buckeyes have claimed victory in each of their first five matches to start the 2003 season.
The last time an Ohio State team started a season 5-0 was 1998 when the Buckeyes registered wins at Evansville, at Louisville, at Dayton, over Purdue and over Xavier. The 2003 and 1998 season also share a striking similarity in that the Buckeyes outscored their opponents by a 14-2 margin and each team posted three shutouts among the five wins.
BUCKEYES EARN HIGHEST RANKING IN 10-YEAR HISTORY
With its 6-0 start, including an upset of then-No. 6 Virginia on September 5 and a shutout of 2002 Conference USA champion Cincinnati last Friday, the Buckeyes are continuing to climb in NSCAA.com/adidas Top 25, as OSU has staked claim to the No. 12 slot. The ranking is Ohio State’s highest in program history and marks OSU’s second mention in the Top 25 since claiming the 15th spot last week. The Buckeyes have cracked the Top 25 in the Soccertimes.com and Soccerbuzz.com polls as well, claiming the No. 18 ranking in Soccertimes, while scoring the No. 24 spot in Soccer Buzz this week.
REGIONAL RECOGNITION
The Buckeyes also find themselves in the regional rankings as OSU claims the No. 2 slot in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes poll, while they hold the No. 3 spot behind conference foe Michigan State and Notre Dame in the Soccer Buzz.com regional poll.
AN EYE ON THE HAWKEYES
The Iowa Hawkeyes come into Friday’s contest sporting an even 3-3 record. After getting off to a 1-3 start the Hawkeyes have rebounded with two straight victories over Rutgers and BYU at the Kentucky Invitational.
The Hawkeyes are led by leading scorer, sophomore forward, Katelyn Quinn, who scored the game-winning goal against BYU Sunday. Quinn leads the Hawkeyes with four goals and eight points. For her career, Quinn has scored 15 goals, had five assists and tallied 35 points.
Net-minding duties are given to Britta Vogela. Vogela has 50 saves and a goals against average of 1.68. Vogela has completed one shutout this season coming against Drake and boasts a career record of 19-16-2 along with 287 career saves.
The head coach of the Hawkeyes is Carla Baker. Baker is in her second season as head coach and has complied a career record of 14-10-1. She finished 11-7-1 in her inaugural season last fall with three of her players honored by the Big Ten in the postseason.
LAST SEASON: IOWA 3, OSU 1
Ohio State suffered a 3-1 defeat to Iowa last season at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Hawkeyes prevailed despite being out-shot by OSU 29-10, including a 20-4 margin in the second half.
The Buckeyes stormed out of the gate in the early going of the match. OSU recorded three shots in keeping the ball in the Hawkeye zone for nearly all of the first eight minutes of play. Iowa would answer, however, with a burst of three goals over the next eight minutes of action to build what would turn out to be an insurmountable lead.
Ohio State tallied nine shots in the first 15 minutes of play in the second stanza, but failed to strike the Iowa net until freshman forward Colleen Hoban snapped the scoring drought as she buried a rebounded-shot in the Hawkeye net in the 58th minute. The goal was Hoban’s fifth of the season. Sophomore midfielder Paige Harrison and Lisa Grubb each were credited with an assist on the play.
Ohio State continued its onslaught upon the Hawkeye defense as it registered 10 more shots over the final 32 minutes but were denied each time by Iowa goaltender Britta Vogele, who tallied 11 saves to record her sixth win of the season.

“A CELEBRATION OF 10”
The Ohio State women’s soccer program held its “A Celebration of 10” reunion Aug. 29 and 30 to recognize the 10-year anniversary of the sport. Festivities kicked off Friday, Aug. 29 as the Buckeyes played host to Indiana State in the 2003 home opener and scored a 4-1 victory.
The game commenced a two-day celebration of the tradition and excellence exhibited by the program over the past decade. Former players in attendance were recognized at halftime, while notable players from each of the 10 seasons were honored at a brunch-style banquet the following Saturday morning at the Longaberger Alumni Center.
Former players also attended the season opening football game between Washington and Ohio State, as the Buckeyes topped the Huskies 28-9.
Since it’s first game September 5, 1993 – a 1-0 triumph over Dayton – Ohio State women’s soccer has competed in the top levels of the Big Ten Conference and the national scene. In nine seasons Ohio State has posted 14, 13 and 12-win campaigns and has culminated its rise to the top of the Big Ten with appearances in the conference tournament championship match in 1998 and 2002, winning the 2002 tournament title to earn the program’s first NCAA tournament bid.
Notable Buckeyes from those squads who have helped build the Ohio State tradition will be honored at both halftime of the Indiana State match and at the ensuing banquet Saturday. Amongst the group are 1994 All-Big Ten performers Jody Stranges (1994-1997), a 2003 Ohio State Varsity “O” Hall of Fame Inductee and four-time all-conference honoree, Lisa Suttmiller (1994-97), OSU’s career points leader, and Bree Blakely (1993-96), the first Buckeye to earn First Team All-Big Ten status. 1995 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jennifer Plante (1995-1998) also will be honored, while 1998 All-Big Ten and Great Lakes Region selection Becky Borchers (1995-1998) will be on hand as well.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

The program also boasts 62 OSU Scholar-Athlete selections and the collegiate academic award in 2002.
