Senior tight end Ben Hartsock had a career day against theWolfpack of North Carolina State Saturday in the Buckeyes’triple-overtime win. The 6-4, 265-pounder snared seven CraigKrenzel passes for 65 yards, both career highs. In addition, hecaught one of three overtime touchdown passes. His efforts earnedOffensive Lineman of the Week honors from the Buckeye coachingstaff. Women’s volleyball junior Stacey Gordon continued her hotstreak, as she had 32 kills against both Cleveland State and Riceand 22 against Brigham Young last week. Against CSU and BYU, Gordontied her career high with 21 digs in each match. She has had nofewer than 21 kills in each of the six matches this season.

The Ohio State University Department of Athletics was named the2003 U.S. Synchronized Swimming Award winner last weekend at theannual United States Aquatic Sports Convention in San Diego, Calif.The award “recognizes individuals outside the sport of synchronizedswimming who have made significant contributions to the developmentof our sport on the national or worldwide level,” according to U.S.Synchronized Swimming. Women’s volleyball (4-2) won two of threematches last week. OSU defeated Cleveland State, 3-1, at home andin Provo, Utah at the Mizuno Classic, the Buckeyes lost to BrighamYoung, 3-1, and defeated Rice, 3-2. OSU trailed 2-1 against theOwls before winning games four and five for the victory. OSU’sStacey Gordon continued her hot streak 32 kills against ClevelandState and Rice and 22 against Brigham Young. She has had no fewerthan 21 kills in each of the six matches this season. The Buckeyeswill face Miami (Ohio) (4-6) in Oxford on Wednesday and hostBowling Green (6-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena after thefootball game. After having a week off from competition, the fieldhockey team returns to action this week with three home games. OSUfaces Ohio at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the North Turf Field. The Buckeyesface the Louisville Cardinals at 10 a.m. Saturday and SouthwestMissouri State at 1 p.m. Sunday at North Turf Field. Junior LucyClayton continues to lead the Big Ten in points (18), points pergame (3.60), goals (8) and goals per game (1.60). Also, at the topof the Big Ten charts is senior Jenee Doto with five assists,averaging 1.00 assists per game. Brutus Buckeye is on of 12 mascotsin the running for Capital One Mascot of the Year. As of this morning, Brutus has aslim lead over “Cocky” the mascot from South Carolina. The men’ssoccer team dropped a pair of matches, both 1-0, to No. 13 Hartwickand Boston College at the Penn State/Nike Classic last weekend. TheBuckeyes are now 1-5 overall, with all six of their matches so farthis season coming against teams that are ranked or received votesin at least one of the three major national polls. This weekendOhio State hosts Valparaiso at 5 p.m. Friday and Duquesne at 2:30p.m. Sunday. The football team kept the nation’s longest winningstreak (17 games) alive with the thrilling triple-overtime win overN.C. State last week. The Buckeyes are 3-0 all-time in overtimegames and have scored touchdowns in all six overtime periods inwins over Illinois, Miami and N.C. State. All three overtimebattles have come in the last six Ohio State games. QuarterbackCraig Krenzel was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Weekafter completing 26-of-36 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns,all career highs, against the Wolfpack. The women’s golf teamopened the 2003-04 season at the NCAA Fall Preview in Auburn, Ala.,where it finished 13th. Pacing the Buckeyes was senior AllisonHanna, as she posted three-consecutive rounds of even-par 72, tofinish the tournament with a three-round total of 216. The men’sand women’s cross country teams will travel to East Lansing, Mich.,site of the 2003 Big Ten championships, to compete in the SpartanInvitational. Both Buckeye teams enter the meet after finishingfirst in the Ohio State Invitational. The men’s golf team will openthe 2003-04 season this Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich. as theycompete in the Northern Invitational, site of the 2004 Big TenChampionships. The Buckeyes feature a team that returns all of itsstarters, including First Team All-Big Ten member Zach Doran. OhioState is coached by Jim Brown, who is beginning his 31st year ashead coach. The women’s soccer team (5-0, 0-0) heads into the 2003Big Ten opener against the Iowa Hawkeyes Friday night at 7:30 inJesse Owens Memorial Stadium aspiring to capture its best start toa season in program history, as the Buckeyes look to improve to6-0. Following the Big Ten opener, the Buckeyes will remain at hometo close out the weekend slate with a non-conference, intrastatematch up with Youngstown State at noon Sunday.
The Buckeyes continued to impress last week with a shutout victory at Cincinnati Friday and a 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina Sunday.
Heather Miller and Colleen Hoban scored goals in OSU’s win over the Bearcats, while junior Emily Gilbert recorded her first two-goal performance to lead the Buckeyes past the Chanticleers. Freshman Jackie LaFond contributed her first career goal in Sunday’s win, while Paige Harrison assisted on each of Gilbert’s scores.
The women’s tennis team kicks off the 2003-04 season at the St.Mary’s Fall Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend. The Buckeyesare looking to extend their streak of consecutive NCAA tournamentappearances to a school-record six this season. The Ohio StateVarsity “O” Association inducted 11 new members into the Ohio StateAthletics Hall of Fame last weekend. The 2003 class included:Britta Eickhoff (Field Hockey), Becky Jasontek (SynchronizedSwimming), Emily Marsh (Synchronized Swimming), JulieSomers-Murberger (Gymnastics), Jodelle (Jodie) Stranges (Soccer),Cris Carter (Football), Jack Lininger (Football), Tom Matte(Football), Korey Stringer (Football), Skip Van Bourgondien(Lacrosse) and Nick Wasylik (Football, Basketball and Baseball).Lininger and Wasylik are being inducted in the “Pioneer” category.A total of 54 women have been inducted since 1993 and 204 men havebeen honored since 1977.
