Brett Garrard (Jr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) was named theMost Outstanding Player of the 2003 Big Ten Baseball Tournament ingoing 9-for-19 with a .474 batting average. He had four home runsfor five RBI and touched 23 bases in leading the squad to itssecond consecutive and sixth overall Big Ten Tournament title.Sophomore golfer Kristen White fired a final-round of 73 andfinished in a tie for sixth place at 300 (+12) to help lead thesquad to a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, thehighest finish in program history.

The Department of Athletics held its annual Scholar-AthleteBanquet Wednesday (May 21) at the Greater Columbus ConventionCenter to honor its student-athletes for their academic andathletic accomplishments. At the event, a number of senior awardswere given out, while a record 413 OSU Scholar-Athletes also wererecognized. The winners of the prestigious Big Ten Conference Medalof Honor were synchronized swimmer Victoria Bowen (Plano, Texas)and Vincent Ng (Broadview Heights, Ohio) of the men’s tennis team.The other male finalists for the 2003 Big Ten Conference Medal ofHonor were Raj Bhavsar (Gymnastics/Houston, Texas), Derrick Butler(Track and Field/Cincinnati, Ohio), Pete Dillon (Lacrosse/GreatFalls, Va.), Andy Groom (Football/Columbus, Ohio) and RichardHuntwork (Gymnastics/Pickerington, Ohio). The female finalistswere: Suzanna Hyatt (Synchronized Swimming/Indianapolis, Ind.),Krista Keir (Track and Field/Westerville, Ohio), Jennifer Link(Softball/Yorba Linda, Calif.), Jennifer Miller(Soccer/Centerville, Ohio) and Katie Virtue (Volleyball/ St.Charles, Ill.). Five student-athletes – Bhavsar, Keir, MeghanMcCartney (Rowing/Swanton, Ohio), Suzy Stiling (Women’s Volleyball/Glenview, Ill.) and Scott Titus (Men’s Hockey/East Grand Rapids,Mich.) – received the Corwin A. Fergus Memorial Award. Hyattreceived the Leann Grimes-Davidge Award, while Virtue received theIrving and Melvin Schottenstein Award. Jonathan Norman (Brimfield,Ohio) of the men’s track and field team received the newest award,the AK and Judith A. Pierce Award. Seven student-athletes earnedVerizon At-Large Academic All-District IV honors. For the men,Vince Ng (tennis), Raj Bhavsar (gymnastics) and Jason Rogers(fencing) were named to the first team, while Scott Titus (hockey)earned second-team accolades. For the women, Kristen White (golf)and Alexandra Shklar (fencing) each earned a spot on the secondteam, while Emma Laaksonen (hockey) was a third-team selection. Asfirst-team all-district honorees, Ng, Bhavsar and Rogers all moveon to the national ballot. Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium will serveas the host site of the first annual NCAA Outdoor Track and FieldMideast Regional Championships Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31.The field will consist of the region’s top performers coming from atotal of 76 men’s squads and 77 women’s teams.
A total of 31 Buckeyes have qualified in at least one event. Several will compete in multiple events, including senior Joel Brown (110-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 4×100-meter relay), junior Dan Taylor (hammer, discus, shot put) and freshman Amarachi Ukabam (hammer, discus, shot put), who each have earned bids in three events.
The baseball team drew a third seed and will open the NCAATournament at the Auburn Regional in Auburn, Ala. against thesecond-seeded Clemson Tigers Friday at 3:30 p.m. (EDT) game atSamford Stadium and Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park. Auburn andPrinceton are the other two teams in the regional and will play at7:30 p.m. Friday night. The Buckeyes, seeded second, finished theBig Ten Tournament with a 4-1 record, beating Minnesota twiceSunday to win their second straight Big Ten Tournament. Ohio Stateenters the NCAA Tournament with a 41-19 overall record. This is theschool’s 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and the 10th,including four in the last five seasons, under Todd.

Joining him on the all-tournament team by pitcher Josh Newman (Jr., Wheelersburg, Ohio/Wheelersburg), outfielders Christian Snavely (Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) and Mike Rabin (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East), and designated hitter Steve Caravati (So., Dover, Ohio/Dover).
The women’s golf team finished fourth at the NCAA Championshipsin West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes posted a final-round score of293 and ended the tournament with 1,214 strokes, 17 strokes out offirst but just one away from third and two away from second. TheTop 4 teams were awarded team and individual trophies in a ceremonyfollowing the last round of competition. Fourth place is OhioState’s highest finish at the NCAA championships in school history.Sophomore Kristen White fired a round of 73 and finished in a tiefor sixth place at 300 (+12). Teammate Allison Hanna also posted afinal round-score of 73 and finished with a composite 301 (+13), ina tie for 11th. The Top 15 individuals also were given trophies fortheir efforts. Lindsay Knowlton placed in a tie for 19th afterposting a round of 74. She finished the event with a mark of 303(+15). Jennifer Selfinger finished tied for 55th at 310 (22) aftershe tallied a final-round score of 73.
Hanna and White were named 2002-03 NGCA Second Team All-America, the National Golf Coaches Association announced over the weekend. All-Americans and other award winners were recognized at a banquet following the NCAA championships in West Lafayette, Ind., May 23. Hanna and White are the eighth and ninth Buckeyes, respectively, to earn All-America honors in the history of Ohio State women’s golf.
Following the first central region championship in rowingprogram history, three Buckeyes were named to the 2003 First TeamAll-Central Region and one was named to the all-region second team.Seniors Maxi Meissner (Schoenow, Germany/Sportschule Potsdam) andKarla Fiserova (Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic/Obchodni AkademieTGM) and sophomore Franziska Schubert (Dresden, Germany/VitzthumGymnasium) were the first team honorees, while Natalie Legge (Jr.,Sydney, Australia/St. George) was named to the second team. AndyTeitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, added to the Buckeyes’individual accolades, receiving the Central Region Coach of theYear Award for the second-consecutive season. The No. 8 Buckeyerowing squad will compete at the 2003 NCAA Championships Fri. May30-Sun. June 1 at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Ind. Men’slacrosse senior attackman Curtis Smith (Victoria, BritishColumbia/Oak Bay), junior defenseman Greg Bice (Helotes, Texas/St.Mary’s Hall) and junior goalie Tony Russo (Fallston, Md./CalvertHall) all received 2003 STX/USILA All-America honorable mentionaccolades, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Associationannounced Monday. The three are the first Buckeyes to earn thehonor since 2000 and just the second, third and fourth Buckeyes tobe so honored since 1979. Smith and midfielder Pat Myers(Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) were selected to compete in the 62ndannual 2003 STX/USILA North-South All-Star Game, the United StatesIntercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced Friday. Basketballplayer Caity Matter was named to the 2003 USA Basketball WorldChampionship For Young Women Team. The squad of 12, which will belead by Ohio State head coach Jim Foster, was selected after lastweekend’s USA Basketball Women’s National Team Trials, whichfeatured 58 of the nation’s top collegiate players and took placeat the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Spring, Colo. Priorto competing in the inaugural FIBA World Championship for YoungWomen in Sibenik, Croatia, July 25-Aug. 3, the team will prepareJuly 7-24 in Colorado Springs, at the New York Athletic Club in NewYork City and by scrimmaging national teams from Australia andBrazil and the USA Pan American Games Team (which was alsodetermined from last weekend’s trials) in Boston. Vince Ng (Sr.,Broadview Heights, Ohio), a senior on the men’s tennis team, wasnamed the national 2003 ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Awardrecipient. The ITA/Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award goes to aplayer who displays sportsmanship, character, excellent academics,and has had outstanding tennis playing accomplishments. Ng finishedthe 2002-03 season with a 41-7 singles record and a 132-46 careersingles mark. Women’s lacrosse student-athlete Regina Oliver(Midfield, So., Pottstown, Pa.) has been named to the first team ofthe Warrior/Inside Lacrosse All-American squad. Additionally, ErinForquer (Goalie, So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) and Shannon Wilson(Midfield, Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) were named to the second teamand Tracey Bounds (Attack, Sr., Ellicott City, Md.) and KimberlyLowe (Defense, Sr., Philadelphia, Pa.) to the third team. Named tothe 2003 Brine Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse CoachesAssociation/U.S. Lacrosse Division I First Team Mid-AtlanticAll-Region team were Tracey Bounds, Regina Oliver, Shannon Wilsonand Kimberly Lowe. The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse CoachesAssociation and US Lacrosse announced their All-American teams for2003. The teams include three athletes from Ohio State, with ReginaOliver and Shannon Wilson earning second-team accolades and KimLowe named to the third team.
The 2003 Ohio State women’s lacrosse season proved to be the best in the eight-year history of the program. The Buckeyes won a school record 14 games (14-4 overall), captured the American Lacrosse Conference championship (5-1 record), swept the major ALC postseason awards and received its second consecutive at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, advancing to the quarterfinals with an upset of fourth-seeded Duke.
