Columbus, OH – Following the first central region championship in Ohio State rowing program history, three Buckeyes were named to the all-region first team and one to the second team, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced Friday. Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, received the Central Region Coach of the Year Award for the second-consecutive season.
Seniors Maxi Meissner (Schoenow, Germany/Sportschule Potsdam) and Karla Fiserova (Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic/Obchodni Akademie TGM) and sophomore Franziska Schubert (Dresden, Germany/Vitzthum Gymnasium) were named to the 2003 First Team All-Central Region. Natalie Legge (Jr., Sydney, Australia/St. George) was named to the second team.
Meissner and Fiserova each have earned first team all-region honors once before. Meissner was named to the all-central region team in 2001, while Fiserova garnered first team all-region accolades in 2002. Each also were named to the 2003 First Team All-Big Ten and are one-time All-Americans. Meissner was named to the first team All-America in 2001. Fiserova was named to the 2002 second team.
Schubert earns all-region honors for the second time. She garnered a 2002 second team selection. She also was a member of the 2002 First Team All-Big Ten. Legge, meanwhile, was a first team All-Big Ten honoree this season but earns all-region accolades for the first time.
Teitelbaum has compiled a 222-106 first varsity 8 record in eight seasons at the helm of the Buckeyes. In 2002, he was awarded central region and Big Ten coach of the year honors for helping lead the team to a fifth-place national finish, a Big Ten championship and a 53-5 first varsity 8 record, setting program bests for most wins and highest winning percentage in a season. So far in 2003, Teitelbaum had guided the OSU first varsity 8 to second-place finishes at both the Big Ten and central region championships, sporting a 26-7 record.
Fiserova, Schubert and Legge, along with teammate Diana Albrecht (So., Dresden, Germany/Vitzkum Gymnasium) were named 2003 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete Award winners. Student-athletes qualify for the award by holding at least a 3.5 grade-point-average and having competed in at least 75 percent of the team’s first varsity 8 races.
The Ohio State rowing team will wrap up its 2003 season when it makes its fourth-consecutive appearance at the NCAA championships Fri. May 30-Sun. June 1 at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Ind.
