Three Buckeyes Qualify for U.S. Gymnastics Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three members of the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team qualified for the U.S. Gymnastics Championships at the USA Gymnastics National Qualifier Saturday in Keen Arena on the campus of Michigan. Buckeyes Ryan Schwartzkopf (Sr., Columbus, Ind.), Jamey Houle (Jr., Enfield, Conn.) and Randy Monahan (So., Elizabethtown, Pa.) will join Raj Bhavsar (Sr., Houston, Texas) in the national championships. Bhavsar qualified for the event Feb. 8 at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas.
Monahan compiled a 53.475 in the all-around to land in seventh place. Houle posted a 52.325 to place 14th. Schwartzkopf, a pommel horse specialist, qualified for his event. Bhavsar tallied 35.9 points without competing on vault or high bar.
“The guys did a good job,” OSU head coach Miles Avery said. “Once again we had the most athletes from any collegiate training site and I’m proud of that.”
The U.S. Gymnastics Championships will be held June 19-21 in Milwaukee, Wis. Apart from being the national championships; the event will act as a qualifier for the USA National Team (14 members). This year the national championships also will serve as a part of the trials process for selecting the USA World Championships Team (six members).
