Athletes of the Week
Tracey Bounds of the women’s lacrosse team scored a game-highfour goals in OSU’s 17-3 victory at Davidson. Her first goal of thegame, OSU’s fourth, was the game winner. Her fourth goal of thegame was her 100th of her career for Ohio State. She becomes onlythe second OSU player to score 100 or more goals. The other is nowassistant coach Megan Mirick (1999-02) who had 143 in her career.Bounds had five ground balls, one caused turnover and one drawcontrol against the Wildcats. Bounds is third in scoring for OSUwith 16 goals, five assists for 21 points. She has a team-high 50ground balls. Sophomore golfer Lindsay Knowlton posted a score of216 (71-70-75) to place second on the individual leaderboard at theLiz Murphey Collegiate Classic. She set three career-bests in theevent: highest finish (2nd), lowest round (70) and lowesttournament score (216). Amarachi Ukabam (AM-uh-rah-CHEEYOO-kah-bahm) scored a career-best 49-7 to win the women’s shot putand add her second regional qualifying mark in the event at theOhio State Relays. The freshman also claimed first in the women’sdiscus with another regional mark of 159-6. She was named Big TenAthlete of the Week for her performance.

Congratulations to Greg Aylsworth, Todd Lamb and Diana Sabau ofAthletics Communications for earning Best in the Nation accoladesfor their 2002 Football Gameday Program. The No. 3 men’s gymnasticsteam will travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the NCAAchampionships Friday through Sunday at the Liacouras Center. Thenational qualifier will take place in two sessions on Friday, withOhio State scheduled for the 1 p.m. time slot. The team andall-around championships will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. and theevent finals will be Sunday at 2 p.m. Senior Raj Bhavsar looks todefend the all-around title he claimed last season. The No. 14men’s lacrosse team opened its GWLL season with an upset victoryover rival and then-No. 12/15-ranked Notre Dame, 11-5, Sunday atJesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The squad was led by GWLL Player ofthe Week Tony Russo, who made 11 saves in goal. Curtis Smith, TomRandisi and Anthony Gilardi each chipped in three goals in thevictory. The Buckeyes close out their four-game homestand Sundaywhen they play host to Fairfield at noon. The No. 25 men’s tennisteam captured a 5-2 victory over Purdue, Sunday at Jesse Owens WestRecreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes improved to 15-5overall and 5-1 in Big Ten play. Ty Tucker, Ohio State head coach,claimed his 75th win at the helm of the Buckeye program. Tucker hasa 75-25 career record in four years at Ohio State and currently is33-10 in Big Ten play. Vince Ng (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) tiedthe Ohio State record for career singles wins after he defeatedPurdue’s Andrew Wakefield in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2spot. Ng, ranked No. 47 in the country, tied Roger Smith’s(1983-86) career singles record of 126 set 17 years ago in 1986. Ngowns a 126-44 career record and is 16-3 in 2003 duals. Next up, theBuckeye squad travels to Wisconsin for a 4 p.m. EDT match Friday,April 11 in Madison, Wis. and a 1 p.m. match against NorthwesternSunday, April 13 in Evanston, Ill. The women’s tennis team droppedits first two Big Ten matches this season at Purdue Saturday and atIllinois Sunday. The Buckeyes are 10-7 on the season and 4-2 inconference play. No. 53 senior Sadhaf Pervez recorded her firstloss of the season as she snapped a 16 match win streak in ahard-fought, back-and-forth battle vs. No. 66 Jennifer McGaffigan,3-6, 7-6, 1-0(10). Ohio State will begin a three-match homestandvs. No. 15 Kentucky at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by Wisconsinat 9 a.m. Saturday and No. 17 Northwestern at 11 a.m. Sunday. Thewomen’s golf team shot a final-round score of 293 to finish secondSunday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Buckeyescompleted the tournament with a total score of 887 (+23). Ohio State will playhost to the Lady Buckeye Invitational on the University ScarletCourse April 19-20 in Columbus, Ohio. The men’s golf team returnsto Columbus this weekend to compete in the 34th Annual RobertKepler Invitational after finishing ninth at the MarshallInvitational. Zach Doran led the Buckeyes for the sixth time thisseason as he finished tied for 16th with a three-round score of219. 10th-ranked women’s lacrosse (8-2 overall, 3-0 AmericanLacrosse Conference) won 17-3 at Davidson Sunday. Tracey Bounds hada team-high four goals with Shannon Wilson scoring three. OSU playsat seventh-ranked Cornell (7-1) at 4 p.m. Friday. The Buckeyes thenreturn home for a Sunday contest against California. The game isthe second part of a doubleheader with the men’s lacrosse teamhosting Fairfield at noon. 14th-ranked men’s volleyball (16-10overall, 11-4 Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) wontwo of three matches last week. OSU defeated Mercyhurst 3-0 andQuincy 3-1 and lost to fifth-ranked Lewis 0-3. OSU’s Tom Trantowsaw in the back row against Lewis and Quincy after missing theprevious four matches with an injury. Against Quincy, Andy Cole hada match-high 17 kills against the Hawks while Mike Wauligmancollected a career-high 16 digs in the contest. The Ohio Statemen’s and women’s track and field team commenced the 2003 outdoorseason as it played host to the Ohio State Relays Saturday at JesseOwens Memorial Stadium as seven Buckeyes qualified for the 2003NCAA Regional Championships, which are set to be held May 30 and 31at Ohio State.
For the second-straight week OSU thrower Dan Taylor established an Ohio State record with a 205-7 in the hammer to best his 204-10 effort last week at the Arizona State Invitational. Taylor coupled that performance with another OSU record mark in the discus with a 187-4, besting his 182-0 standard set last season. Both efforts qualify Taylor for regional competition. Amarachi Ukabam (AM-uh-rah-CHEE YOO-kah-bahm) scored a career-best 49-7 to win the women’s shot put and add her second regional qualifying mark in the event at the Ohio State Relays. The freshman also claimed first in the women’s discus with another regional mark of 159-6. She was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week for her performance.
Taylor and Ukabam scored individual first place efforts in the throw events, while three other throwers posted NCAA regional qualifying marks in seniors Erin Carter (47-9.25 in the shot put) and Katy Houser (168-10 in the hammer) and junior Shelaine Larson with a 174-8 for her third qualifying standard in as many weeks, while fellow sophomore Keturah Lofton scored a career-best 184-4 to take second place and join her teammates as a regional qualifier.
Six Buckeyes placed first in their respective events as seniors Rob Myers (800-meter run), Tami Smith (high jump) and Dalanda Jackson (100-meter hurdles) and sophomores Brandi Hogan (200-meter dash) and Greg Norman in the 100-meter dash, while fellow sophomore Shayla Moore topped the field in both the women’s long jump and triple jump with a 40-0 regional qualifying mark.
The No. 25 softball team (17-12, 2-2 Big Ten) will look tobounce back this week with games against Toledo, Akron and Iowa. Ina schedule change, the doubleheader with Toledo, which originallywas scheduled for Friday, April 11 at Buckeye Field, now will beplayed Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 3 p.m. at Buckeye Field. TheBuckeyes then will travel to Akron Thursday, April 10 for adoubleheader with the Zips beginning at 2 p.m. at the University ofAkron softball field instead of Firestone Stadium. Ohio State willhave no games Friday or Saturday and will play host to Big Tenleader Iowa for a doubleheader beginning at noon Sunday at BuckeyeField. The baseball team plays host to Oakland in a doubleheaderWednesday at 4:05 p.m., to begin a stretch of 12 straight homegames. Iowa visits Columbus this weekend. The teams will play asingle game at 6:35 p.m. Friday and then play two games at 4:05p.m. Saturday before the finale at 1:05 p.m. on Sunday. The squadis now 13-10 on the year after splitting four games last weekend atPenn State. Ohio State rallied on the bat of Christian Snavely(Jr., Defiance, Ohio/Defiance) to win that game 4-3 in 10 innings.His home run in the top of the ninth tied the game at three andthen an RBI triple won it in the top of the 10th. The Nittany Lionsclaimed game one of the doubleheader 2-1. Ohio State won the secondgame 7-5, but dropped the series finale 10-2. The Buckeyes are now4-4 in the Big Ten, which ties them for fourth place.
