Men’s volleyball outside hitter Andy Cole (Fr., Glendale, Wis./Nicolet H.S.) has been selected as the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week. Cole had an outstanding weekend in helping the Buckeyes to wins over Clarke and Findlay. He hit a career-high .737 against the Crusaders on 16 kills and two errors in 19 attempts. He added an ace serve, two digs and five assists blocks in the 30-16, 30-16, 30-23 win over Clarke. Cole started the match with 13 consecutive kills. He hit .706 (12 kills in 17 attempts with no errors) at Findlay the next night in OSU’s 30-22, 30-26, 30-19 win. Cole added six digs and two assists blocks against the Oilers. For the two matches (six games), Cole hit .722 with 28 kills and two errors in 36 attempts. He averaged 4.67 kills, 1.33 digs and 1.17 blocks per game.
Thrower Dan Taylor (Jr., Middlefield, Ohio) set a school mark in an event for the fifth-consecutive week, while also establishing a Big Ten record in the weight throw. Taylor, who has bested his own records in each of the shot put and weight throw events this season, established a new conference and Ohio State mark in the weight throw with a first-place toss of 22.03m. He also placed first with a 19.65m throw in the shot put. Both figures are automatic qualifiers for NCAA competition.
Junior Kristi DeVries went 2-1 over the weekend as the No. 16 softball team went 2-3 at the Florida International Invitational in Miami, Fla. DeVries allowed just two earned runs over 17.1 innings of work while recording 17 strikeouts and allowing just four walks. Overall, DeVries went 2-1, posting a 0.81 ERA in three appearances.
Senior gymnast Rickee Wirtzberger posted a perfect 10.000 on the floor exercise, setting a school record, as the No. 24 women’s gymnastics team (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) recorded a 195.500-192.875 win over Ball State Saturday. Her score also helped the Buckeyes post a season-high team score on the floor exercise with a 49.525. In addition, Wirtzberger recorded a solid score of 9.625 on vault in the win.
