No. 4 Fencing Advances Twelve To NCAA Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio-The No. 4 Ohio State fencing team has qualified the maximum number of 12 competitors to next weekends NCAA championships, the NCAA Fencing Committee announced Friday. This years championships will be held at the Cadet Field House on the U.S. Air Force Academy military base in Colorado Springs, Colo., March 20-23.
The Buckeyes qualified 10 competitors to last year’s NCAA championships and placed fourth with 140 points.
Advancing for the men are Brian Gross (So., Cleveland, Ohio) and Spencer Jones (Sr., Ft. Leonardwood, Mo.) in epee, Nathan Weir (Jr., Kennewick, Wash.) and Matt Carbone (Fr., Potomac, Md.) in foil and Adam Crompton (Fr., Newark, N.J.) and Jason Rogers (So., Los Angeles, Calif.), a 2002 bronze medallist, in sabre. Crompton and Rogers are ranked No. 1 and 3, respectively, in the junior men’s sabre national rankings.
For the women, Alexandra Shklar (Jr., Jerusalem, Israel) and Sherice Gearhart (Fr., San Antonio, Texas) advanced in epee, Hannah Thompson (So., Rochester, N.Y.) and Metta Thompson (So., Rochester, N.Y.) in foil and Louise Bond-Williams (So., Gloucestershire, England), 2002 silver medallist, and Marguerite Plekhanov (Fr., Montclair, N.J.) in sabre. Hannah and Metta Thompson are No. 3 and 4 in the latest junior women’s foil national rankings.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place. Absolute ties for the seeding will be broken as follows: for positions one through three, by a coin toss; for position four, by a fence-off.
An institution’s place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
