COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Velimir Radinovic scored 19 points as Ohio State repeatedly pounded the ball inside to beat Maryland-Baltimore County 60-44 Tuesday night for the Buckeyes’ third win in a row.
Radinovic hit 7 of 12 shots from the field – none more than 5 feet from the hoop – and 5 of 9 free throws to finish within a point of his career high. He also had two assists and six rebounds.
Tony Stockman added 12 points for the Buckeyes (8-4).
Ohio State has one more non-conference game left – Sunday afternoon against Texas Tech and coach Bob Knight, a former Buckeyes player – before beginning the Big Ten season Jan. 7 at Illinois.
Cory McJimson came off the bench to score 10 points. John Zito also had 10 for the Retrievers (3-6), who lost their third in a row and fifth in six games.
Ahead 31-24 early in the second half, the Buckeyes went on an 8-0 run with Stockman hitting two baskets. Later in the half, they were on top 41-28 and scored 10 of the next 12 points to expand the lead to 51-30.
Throughout both spurts, Ohio State set up on offense and looked inside to big men Radinovic, Terence Dials and Shun Jenkins, who had a decided height and weight advantage on the smaller, slimmer Retrievers.
The Retrievers hit just 36 percent of their shots from the field and were outrebounded 36-30.
Ohio State was sloppy and harried in the first 20 minutes yet still led 29-20 as the Retrievers hit 33 percent of their shots. The Buckeyes missed their first five shots from the field and trailed 6-4 after the opening 4 minutes.
The Buckeyes went on a 8-0 run while holding UMBC scoreless for 4:19 to build a 20-9 lead. Ahead 24-13, however, they in turn went scoreless for 4:08 as the Retrievers went on a 6-point run.
