Athletes of the Week
Two Buckeyes earned CCHA Player of the Week honors for theirperformances in the Lefty McFadden Invitational. Dave Steckel wasnamed the league’s offensive player of the week for the first timein his career after posting three goals in the two games, includingthe gamewinner against Miami. Nate Guenin earned defensive playeraccolades for the first time after going +1 in each game of thetournament and posting a career-high tying two assists, includingon one the gamewinner, against Miami. Lyndsi Gay paced the crosscountry team for the third-consecutive meet this past Friday, atthe Indiana State Invitational as she posted a second-place finish,clocking a time of 21:59.90. In three meets this season, Gay hasposted three Top 10 performances, including a first-place finish atthe Ohio State Invitational. Freshman goalkeeper Staci Sinkway(Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano) accounted for 163 minutes ofshutout soccer this weekend in leading the Buckeyes to a 1-1 tiewith Michigan Friday, while also recording her first career shutoutin her first match as a starter in Ohio State’s 1-0 win overMichigan State Sunday. Sinkway collected four saves over the twomatches as the Buckeyes matched their best 11-game start in programhistory at 8-1-2.
Athletics Good Stuff
The women’s cross country claimed victory at the 2003 IndianaState Invitational, Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind. The women wereled by senior Lyndsi Gay, who placed second as she clocked a timeof 21:59.90. The women’s team will return to action this Fridayalong with the men in Delaware, Ohio as they will compete in theAll-Ohio Invitational, who also are coming off a strong performanceafter their third place finish at 2003 Great American Cross CountryFestival. The No. 14-ranked men’s hockey team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 CCHA)will open its home and Central Collegiate Hockey Associationschedule this weekend, as it plays host to Notre Dame (0-0-0, 0-0-0CCHA) in a two-game series. The teams will face off at 8:05 p.m.Friday, Oct. 10 and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 in Value CityArena in Columbus. Note the Friday game time has changed fromearlier schedules. The Buckeyes are 1-1-0 on the season and arecoming off a win in the consolation game of the Lefty McFaddenInvitational last weekend. In the tournament’s opening round, theBuckeyes fell to Denver, 5-2, with Dave Steckel and Paul Caponigriscoring for the squad. In the consolation game against rival Miami,Steckel scored twice, Caponigri had a goal and an assist and NateGuenin had two assists to lead the squad to a 5-3 victory. Thewomen’s soccer team (8-1-2, 2-1-2) suffered just its third blemishin 10 matches when the Buckeyes battled Michigan to a 1-1double-overtime draw Friday night at Jesse Owens Stadium. OSUforward Kathy Fulk scored her third goal of the season in thesecond half to send the match to overtime.
The Buckeyes responded to the tie against the Wolverines with a dramatic and hard-fought 1-0 win over Michigan State Sunday. Juniors Erica Nollen and Emily Gilbert converted a corner kick in the 83rd minute to assure Ohio State’s 8th win of the season. The goal was Gilberts third on the year, while Nollen notched her first assist in 2003.
Ohio State continues the Big Ten slate with a trip to Illinois at 7 p.m. Friday and a Sunday match at Northwestern, starting at 12:30 p.m.
The men’s soccer team was defeated 2-1 in double-overtimeSunday at Michigan State to see its record slip to 1-1 in the BigTen. Junior Adam Schauer scored his first goal as a Buckeye in thematch, while junior Chad Brown collected five saves. The Buckeyescontinue to own the Big Ten’s best defense and have scored a goalin three consecutive games. Ohio State will travel to Louisville at7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 before hosting Penn State at 2 p.m.,Sunday, Oct. 12. The field hockey team traveled to College Park,Md., for two matches over the weekend. The Buckeyes defeated Maine2-1 in overtime Saturday. Senior Vanessa Immordino led the squadscoring both Buckeye goals and recorded her 100th career point.Despite a 3-1 loss Sunday, the Buckeyes put up an impressiveperformance against No. 2 Maryland. Sophomore goalkeeper LindseyWilliams held the Terps scoreless in the second half and posted acareer high 13 saves. OSU travels to Ball State Wednesday to battlethe Cardinals at 4 p.m. before heading to University Park, Pa.,where the Buckeyes take on the Penn State Nittany Lions at 6 p.m.Friday. The women’s ice hockey team opens its season with atwo-game exhibition series vs. the Toronto Varsity Blues at 7:05p.m. Friday and at 2:05 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink inColumbus, Ohio. Regular season and WCHA action kicks off Oct. 17and 18 as the Buckeyes travel to Minneapolis, Minn., to take on theMinnesota Golden Gophers. The softball team fashioned a perfect 5-0record last weekend at the third-annual Ohio Collegiate CharityClassic at Fred Beekman Park. The Buckeyes defeated Wright State7-1, Bowling Green 1-0, Youngstown State 1-0, Ohio 5-3 and KentState 3-0. Sophomore Stacy Hibma led Ohio State at the plate,batting .667 during the weekend, while senior Kristi DeVries batted.500 and juniors Natalie Hales and Jennifer Johnson both batted.400. DeVries was 2-0 in the pitching circle with a 0.00 ERA in 13innings pitched, as was freshman Jamee Juarez in 12 innings inwork. The Buckeyes will participate in the Wright State falltournament this weekend. Women’s volleyball (7-5 overall, 1-3 BigTen) split conference matches last weekend. OSU defeated Indiana3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-24) and lost 1-3 (30-27, 25-30, 22-30, 20-30)to Purdue. OSU’s Stacey Gordon had 26 kills against Indiana withAmanda Miller adding 16 while hitting a career-high .636 (16-2-22).Against Purdue, Gordon had a team-high 21 kills with Heather Whalenadding 11. Gordon now has recorded double-figure kills in her last60 matches. Ohio State goes on the road this weekend to faceNorthwestern Friday and Illinois Saturday. Emily Howard (So.,Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Lindsay Bryan (Sr., New Orleans,La./Ursuline Academy) won the Red Flight doubles title while AnnaVolberg (Fr., Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) advanced to the Green Flightsingles final at the Kentucky Fall Women’s Tennis Classic inLexington, Ky. Playing in the first flight final of her collegecareer, Volberg fell in straight sets to fellow freshman LaraMaurer of host Kentucky, 6-2, 6-2. Previously, Volberg defeatedChristine Simpson of Kentucky and Kelly Nelson of Notre Dame toreach the final. Howard and Bryan narrowly defeated Israel andYarbrough of Abilene Christian, 9-7, in the semifinal before easilystopping Hill and Vest from Marshall, 8-2, in the final.
The Buckeyes resume play Oct. 22-28 at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Kalamazoo, Mich.
The baseball team will conclude fall practice Oct. 13-17 withthe annual Scarlet and Gray World Series. The best-of-fiveintrasquad series will be played at Bill Davis Stadium. The gamesbegin every day at 3 p.m., with the exception of Wednesday, whichwill begin at 6:30 p.m. Ohio State, with a 44-21 record came withintwo wins of the College World Series last June after winning theBig Ten Tournament and claiming the NCAA Auburn Regional beforefalling in super regional play at Bill Davis Stadium. The teamreturns seven of eight position starters and 15 lettermen from thatteam. The squad is joined by 12 newcomers, including 11 freshmen.The rifle team will host Kentucky this Saturday to their season.Brutus Buckeye is one of 12 mascots in the running for Capital OneMascot of the Year. Fans may vote for Brutus daily by visitinghttp://ohiostatebuckeyes.ocsn.com/genrel/brutus2003.html. Votingwill continue through Dec. 23. As of this morning, Brutus has alead over “Cocky” the mascot from South Carolina.
