Men’s hockey senior goalie Mike Betz (Elizabeth, Pa.) was namedthe INCH (insidecollegehockey.com) National Player of the Week andthe Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of theWeek after leading the Buckeyes to a road sweep of Michigan Statelast weekend. Betz allowed just one goal in two games, agoals-against average of .50, and stopped 47-of-48 MSU shots on theweekend for a save percentage of .979. Betz leads the CCHA ingoals-against average in league play at .67, while his savepercentage is a league-best .974. Freshman Melissa Miller was namedBig Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week Monday after helping the16th -ranked Buckeyes remain unbeaten at home with shutout winsover Wisconsin, 2-0, and Minnesota, 1-0. Miller led the OSU attackin Friday’s win over Wisconsin with a game-winning goal in thefirst half and later assisted on Ohio State’s second goal of thenight. Sunday, she helped the Ohio State defensive unit post itsseventh shutout of the season as Miller and company held the GoldenGophers to just one shot on goal and zero corner kickopportunities. Aaron Fisher (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./FranklinCentral) finished 10th to help lead the Ohio State men’s crosscountry team to a third-place finish at the Pre-National CrossCountry Meet in Waterloo, Iowa. The site will also serve as host tothe NCAA championships November 24. Fisher turned in a season-besttime of 23:42 on the 8-kilometer course.
Athletics Good Stuff
The No-7 men’s cross country team posted an impressivethird-place finish Saturday as the Buckeyes defeated No. 7 rankedOregon and Big Ten foe Iowa in their final meet before the Big Tenchampionships. The 8-kilometer event was held in Waterloo, Iowa,site of the 2003 NCAA Championships. The squad’s ranking of seventhin the nation is the highest in program history. The Ohio Statewomen’s cross country returns to action this Saturday in Ypsilanti,Mich. as they compete in the Eastern Michigan Invitational. The No.12 men’s hockey team went on the road and swept Michigan State intwo games, winning the opener, 5-0, for the first shutout over theSpartans in program history, and the second, 4-1. The Buckeyesextended their winning streak over MSU to six (4-0-2). Michigannative Dan Knapp led the way in the opening game, posting twopoints, including the gamewinning goal, while goalie Mike Betzposted 24 saves for his ninth career shutout. In the finale, ScottMay had two goals and an assist and Lee Spector scored thegamewinner for the win. The Buckeyes return home to play host tonon-conference opponent Mercyhurst Friday at 7:05 p.m. The No.16-ranked women’s soccer team (10-2-3, 4-2-3) remained unbeaten athome this season with a pair of shutout wins over Wisconsin, 2-0,and Minnesota, 1-0, this weekend. Sophomore Colleen Hoban talliedone goal and assisted on a game-winning score against Minnesota,while freshman defender Melissa Miller scored a match-winner of herown in Friday’s win over Wisconsin. Junior Kathy Fulk netted thegame-winner in Sunday’s contest vs. the Golden Gophers in the 96thminute of play.
The Buckeyes look to conclude their home slate with an 8-0-2 mark when they welcome No. 5 Penn State to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Friday night.
The No. 18 field hockey team pulled off a 2-1 upset victoryover the No. 9 Iowa Hawkeyes Oct. 17. Forwards Vanessa Immordino(Sr.; Roseland, N.J.) and Curlyne Wynn (Fr.; Trincity, Trinidad andTobago) fired in both scores for the Buckeyes and helped catapultthe team to an 9-5 overall record, including a 2-1 record in theBig Ten. The Buckeyes are in action this weekend as they take onthe Indiana Hoosiers at noon Saturday on North Turf Field. Seniorday Sunday concludes weekend play when OSU battles the No. 5Michigan Wolverines at 2 p.m. The squad entered the nationalrankings for the first time this year, coming in at No. 18. Themen’s tennis team will compete at the ITA Midwest RegionalChampionships Oct. 23-28 in East Lansing, Mich. In singles action,Jeremy Wurtzman (Sr., Rochester, N.Y./Brickhouse), the No. 1 seedof the tournament, will begin action in the main draw Oct. 25.Other Buckeyes competing in the singles draw are Joey Atas (Fr.,Baltimore, Md/Calvert Hall), Brenton Contini (Sr., Dover,Ohio/Dover), Dennis Mertens (So., Braaschaat, Belgium/Koninkiljk)and Ross Wilson (So., Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St. Francis de Sales).The OSU tandem of Wurtzman and Atas is the No. 2 seed in doubles.Wilson and Scott Green (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) are alsoseeded in the doubles bracket at the No. 9 position. Doubles playwill commence Oct. 25 in East Lansing. The men’s soccer team tiedregionally ranked Oakland, 2-2, Wednesday and was defeated, 3-0, atregionally ranked and Big Ten leader Indiana Sunday. Junior PeterWithers and senior David Ridenhour scored Ohio State’s goalsagainst Oakland. The Buckeyes (3-9-3, 2-2 Big Ten), owners of theBig Ten’s second-ranked defense, will travel to Pittsburgh Fridaynight before returning to Columbus to host their final two Big Tenregular season matches, Oct. 26 vs. Northwestern and Nov. 1 vs.Michigan. Women’s volleyball (8-8 overall, 2-6 Big Ten) lost 3-2 toMinnesota and defeated Iowa 3-0 last week. OSU plays at No. 13 PennState Wednesday and at No. 23 Wisconsin Saturday. Stacey Gordon had28 kills against Minnesota and added 27 against Iowa last week.Libero Rebecca Kastein had a match-high 15 digs against theHawkeyes Rifle finished second in the 13-team BoilermakerInvitational last Saturday. Abhijeet Konduskar took top honors inair rifle (382) and smallbore rifle (1,156). Jessica Sears had thesecond best air rifle (371) mark for Ohio State while Linnea Nygrenwas second for Ohio State in smallbore with a 1.121. The squadreturns to the road next Saturday to compete at Rose-HulmanInstitute of Technology. The pistol team opens the season byhosting the Buckeye Cup. Ohio State finished fourth at the NationalCollegiate Championships last season. Buckeye Jessica Marshall wonboth the women’s sport and air pistol national championships withJennifer Trickett taking third in women’s air and fourth in women’ssport. The Gray squad won game three, 3-1, of the annual intrasquadScarlet-Gray Softball Series Friday night at Buckeye Field. Undernew lights for the first time at Buckeye Field, freshman NycoleKoyano (Walnut, Calif./Walnut), sophomore Nicole Lancaster(Magnolia, Ohio/Sandy Valley) and sophomore Stacy Hibma (BuenaPark, Calif./Valley Christian) all crossed the plate at the top ofthe fifth inning to secure the win and the series for the Grayteam. Softball will officially resume play in the Spring at theArizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic Feb. 13-15. Brutus Buckeye is oneof 12 mascots in the running for Capital One Mascot of the Year.Fans may vote for Brutus daily by visitinghttp://ohiostatebuckeyes.ocsn.com/genrel/brutus2003.html. Votingwill continue through Dec. 23. As of this morning, Brutus has thelead over “Cocky” the mascot from South Carolina. The women’s golfteam sits atop the leaderboard as they head into the final round ofthe 2003 Mercedes-Benz Championships, with a two-round total of588. Senior Allison Hanna, leads all individuals with a two-roundtotal of 142. The event is being held at the par 72, 6,201-yard FoxDen Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. The men’s golf team concludescompetition today at the 2003 Barona Intercollegiate in San Diego,Calif. The event is being held at the par 72, 7,088-yard BaronaCreek Golf Club. The women’s ice hockey team lost two games lastweekend to the No. 1 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Five Buckeyestallied one point each in the contests, marking their first pointsof the season – Tessa Bonhomme, Jennifer Desson, Heather Farrell,Jana Harrigan and Meaghan Mulvaney. OSU faces WCHA foe No. 5Minnesota-Duluth in its home opener at 7:05 p.m. Friday andSaturday in the OSU Ice Rink.
