COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team held its last scrimmage of the preseason, facing a good turnout of alumni Saturday at the Steelwood Athletics Facility. The event was the first time a majority of the alumni had a chance to see the new training facility.
“In our final tune up before we get going for real, we had a real lively, enthusiastic crowd,” OSU head coach Miles Avery said. “Everybody was really encouraging of the guys and they loved our new gym.”
During the event, Avery took the opportunity to announce senior Raj Bhavsar (Houston, Texas), senior Dick Huntwork (Pickerington, Ohio) and junior Jamey Houle (Enfield, Conn.) as team captains for the upcoming season.
Bhavsar was crowned the 2002 NCAA and Big Ten All-Around Champion and the 2002 OSU Male Athlete of the Year. Houle was an All-American on floor last year and is a solid competitor on pommel horse. Huntwork also was an All-American on floor and is a vocal leader during practice and events.
The Buckeyes, ranked No. 2 nationally, will begin the 2003 season at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill. The Buckeyes will compete against opponents from around the Big Ten, as well as the host University of Chicago-Illinois at the invitational.
