Jennifer Trickett (So., Woburn, Mass) of the pistol team wonthree of the five events of the 3rd Annual ROTC Classic. Trickettwon free pistol with a 259 mark and air pistol with a 371 score.She also won the women’s air pistol with a 371 score. Women’sgymnastics freshman Jill Weber led the Buckeyes to their second winof the season over Michigan State Saturday with season-high scoresin every event. Weber came in first overall on vault (9.8750),fourth overall on bars (9.7750), second overall on beam (9.8250)and sixth on the floor exercise (9.800). She placed first overallin the all-around with a season-best 39.275.

The women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 9 Mercyhurst, 2-1,Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes then traveled to Findlay,Ohio where they defeated Findlay, 2-1, for the third-consecutiveyear to win the Ohio Cup. Junior Heather Farrell scored OSU’s lonegoal Saturday. Junior Jeanne Chapple and freshman Jana Harriganscored Sunday. Harrigan moved into second place in scoring on theBuckeye squad after recording the game-winning goal and anadditional assist against Findlay. Shana Frost and Emily Hudak areOSU’s all-time leaders in career points. They are approaching the100-point mark. Frost has 91 points (42-49) and Hudak has 82 points(15-66).The Buckeyes take on WCHA opponent and the No. 2Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs at 7:05 p.m. CST Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 atPioneer Hall in Duluth, Minn. Ohio State is looking to settle thescore against the Bulldogs. Their last meeting was Nov. 8 and 9 inColumbus, where UMD defeated OSU 5-0 and 3-0. Minnesota-Duluth isleading 14-1-2 in the all-time series. The last time OSU traveledto Duluth, the Buckeyes fell in the opener, 4-2, but tied theBulldogs at 3-all in the second game of the series. The women’stennis team defeated Penn State, 4-3, in the first dual match ofthe year Sunday in State College, Pa. The Buckeyes recordedvictories in all three doubles matches and posted three singleswins to start their season with a Big Ten victory. Emily DeCamillaclinched the win for the Buckeyes’ with a victory in a third-settiebreaker at the No. 6 position. The Buckeyes will continue roadplay in Milwaukee, Wis., against Marquette on Friday and Baylor onSaturday. Ohio State will return home to face Big Ten rivalsMichigan State on Feb. 14 and Michigan Feb. 16. The men’sgymnastics team topped Illinois-Chicago, 210.65 to 207.600 Saturdayin the home and dual season opener at St John Arena. SophomoreRandy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.) tallied 52.95 points and tookfirst place in the all-around and senior captain Dick Huntwork(Pickerington, Ohio) placed third by posting 51.75 points. KerryAdderly (So./Orlando, Fla.) had career records on rings (8.95) andon parallel bar (9.0). Matthew Smith (Sr./Salt Lake City), a ringsspecialist, recorded a career-high 9.45 in the event. Since theWindy City Invitational, Huntwork improved on rings, parallel barand high bar while raising his all-around career-high from 49.8 to51.75. The Buckeyes travel to Champaign, Ill., to face Illinois 7p.m. Saturday. The No. 4 ranked fencing team continued itsdominating ways this weekend at the Ohio State Dual Meets at FrenchField House. The women won all 12 matches to improve their overallrecord to an impressive 17-0. The men won all but one of theirmatches, going 11-1 on the weekend, falling only to No. 2 NotreDame, 16-11. The baseball team began practice Monday in the hittingcages at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Head coach Bob Todd alsoannounced that senior pitchers Kyle Brown, Greg Prenger and NateSmith, as well as infielder/outfielder Christian Snavely will sharecaptain duties for the 2003 Buckeyes. All captains were selected bya vote of the team at the conclusion of fall practice in October.The team, which enters the season ranked 25th by the NationalCollegiate Baseball Writers Association, begins it schedule playingfive of its first six games against teams that played in the 2002NCAA Tournament. The regular season slate gets underway Feb. 28when the Buckeyes meet Lamar, Oklahoma and Southwest Missouri Stateat the Tournament of Champions Cardinal Classic in Beaumont, Texas.Freshmen Jill Weber and Shelby Warner led the way for the women’sgymnastics team (2-2) with career best all-around scores of 39.275and 39.075, respectively, as the Buckeyes defeated the MichiganState Spartans Saturday 195.875-195.1750. The Buckeyes defeated theSpartans in every event. The men’s swimming and diving teamfinishes off the dual meet portion of its season at 1 p.m.,Saturday, when it travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a meeting withits arch rival, No. 4 Michigan. The Buckeyes are gearing up for theBig Ten championships, which will take them back to Ann Arbor andwill take place Feb. 27-March 1. The women’s swimming and divingteam took two losses over the weekend in a tri-meet vs. Big Tenfoes Illinois and Iowa. Deanna Strunk (Fr., West Lawn, Pa./Wilson)stood tall for the Buckeyes in the event as a triple individualwinner. After winning the 100 and 200-yard butterfly as well as the200 individual medley vs. Illinois and Iowa, Strunk now has rackedup a team-best 17 first-place finishes in 2002-03, including fivein the team’s last two meets. By setting a new team season’s bestof 58.22 in the 100 fly, she now owns team best times in bothbutterfly events as well as both the 200 and 400 individual medley,all set in the last three weeks. The men’s and women’s track andfield squads competed in the 2003 Purdue Tri-Meet versus Purdue andIndiana on Saturday with the men taking a second place standing,while the women finished third among the competition. Individualhighlights included, Ohio State senior jumper Tami Smith (Sr.,Galloway, Ohio/Westland), taking first in the high jump for thethird consecutive week with a jump of 1.74 meters, while Buckeyejunior thrower Dan Taylor (Middlefield, Ohio) also claimed a firstplace finish in the shot put for the third straight week with amark of 19.45 m. Taylor also claimed first in the weight throw forthe second consecutive week with a toss of 21.66 m. Taylor’s figurein the weight throw sets a new school mark, while his 19.45 m throwin the shot put ties the school record he established last week.The men also received a first place finish from Joel Brown (Sr.,Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) in the 60-meter hurdles as he won theevent in a time of 7.93. Brown, who holds the school record in the60-meter hurdles at 7.90, also finished fifth in the 60-meter dashbehind teammate Harlen Jacobs with a time of 7.03. The No. 23women’s basketball team beat Illinois (82-74) and Iowa (74-59) lastweek and improved to 15-3 overall, a flawless 10-0 at home and 6-1in Big Ten games for the first time since the 1992-93 season. OhioState relied on the even scoring force of five Buckeyes notchingdouble-figures for the first time this season against Illinois.Senior Courtney Coleman, sophomore Caity Matter, freshman KimWilburn, sophomore Ashley Allen and junior LaToya Turner scored 18,16, 15, 10 and 10 points, respectively. The Buckeyes outscored theFighting Illini, 50-28, in the paint due largely to Coleman’sperfect 7-for-7 night. This was Coleman’s second consecutiveflawless performance from the floor after she shot 5-for-5 atNorthwestern Jan. 19. Against Iowa, Matter led the Buckeyesoffensively with 20 points, including a 3-for-6 effort from behindthe arc and a 7-of-8 stroke from the charity stripe. Seniors D’wanShackleford and Coleman added 14 and 11 points, respectively.Shackleford was the team’s leading rebounder with eight boards andMatter tied her season-high mark of six rebounds. Additionally,DiDi Reynolds nailed two free throws and continued her perfectshooting streak from the line and is currently 22-for-22 on theseason. Wrestling senior 157 Keaton Anderson (Pickerington, Ohio)recorded his 12th consecutive victory as he sealed an Ohio State22-15 win at No. 6 Cornell Sunday. Ohio State junior HWT TommyRowlands (Hilliard, Ohio) recorded his 10th pin fall of the seasonas the Buckeyes downed Cornell for the second time in a little morethan a week’s span. Ohio State returns to St. John Arena Thursdayto commence Big Ten action as it plays host to No. 24 IndianaThursday at 7 p.m., while two-time defending national championMinnesota pays a visit Sunday at 2 p.m. Men’s volleyball (3-2)defeated St. Francis 3-1 (30-19, 30-25, 28-30, 30-16) Friday nightin St. John Arena. OSU’s Tom Trantow had 21 kills and 12 digs inthe win. The Buckeyes host Springfield College this Saturday andSunday night at 7 p.m. The pistol squad won the 3rd Annual ROTCClassic with a 4,527 mark. OSU’s Navy ROTC finished second at3,811. Buckeye Jennifer Trickett won three events and JessicaMarshall, two in the Classic. The men’s basketball team defeatedIowa 83-72 last Saturday in Iowa City. It was thefourth-consecutive win for the Buckeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena andfour in a row overall against Iowa in the series. Brent Darby, thethird-leading scorer in the Big Ten (18.5 ppg.) scored 29 pointsand recorded a career high six steals in the win over the Hawkeyes.Sophomore Brandon Fuss-Cheatham handed out a career high sevenassists while redshirt freshman Matt Sylvester contributed 11points and six rebounds, both career highs. The Buckeyes travel toPurdue for an 8 p.m. battle with the Boilermakers Wednesday (ESPNPlus/WBNS 10 TV) in West Lafayette before returning to Columbus toface Northwestern at noon Saturday at Value City Arena. That gamewill be televised on WBNS as well. The synchronized swimming teamdefeated Michigan, 30-22 Saturday in the varsity pool at LarkinsHall, in a meet that featured technical events. Leslie Edgertonplaced first in technical elements with a score of 81.686 whileKatie Meyer and Sharon Meijia finished second and third,respectively. Erin Schmidt placed first in “B” figures with a markof 76.914 and teammates Stephanie Raftery and Jessica Beck place inthe second and third-place spots. In the “C” Figures event, MaryElliott earned first place honors while Kris Moyer finished thirdin “D” figures. The No. 10 men’s hockey (17-6-2, 11-4-1/t-2nd CCHA)team remains on the road, as it travels to face Notre Dame thisweekend. The Buckeyes and Irish will face off at 7:05 p.m. ESTFriday and Saturday in Joyce Center on the Notre Dame campus. Bothgames will be broadcast live on WOSU Radio (820 AM) and online atwosu.org. Junior center R.J. Umberger, who leads the Buckeyes inscoring with 34 points and a career-high tying 18 goals, advancedto the second phase of fan voting for the prestigious Hobey BakerAward. Now through March 9, fans may cast one ballot per day fortheir first, second and third choices online at voteforhobey.com.The fans’ votes, along with ballots from the 60 Division I collegehockey head coaches, will determine the Top 10 finalists, with thelist announced March 20. The rifle squad finished fifth (of 19team) at the 2003 Roger Withrow Invitational hosted by Murray State(Ky.). Abhijeet Konduskar finished third in the two-gun aggregatescoring with a fourth place finish in smallbore and tying for firstin air rifle. The No. 24-ranked men’s tennis team claimed a 6-1victory over the No. 27 Fighting Irish Sunday at Jesse Owens WestRecreation Center. With the win Ohio State improves to 3-0. TheIrish suffered their first lost since the 1988 meeting at NotreDame where the Buckeyes pulled out a 7-2 victory. In the all-timeseries, Notre Dame holds a 26-19 lead over Ohio State. Next up, theBuckeyes play host to DePaul and West Virginia, at noon Saturday,Feb. 1 at the West Recreation Center.
