Men’s volleyball player Andy Cole had 15 kills and hit .400 inthe loss to BYU Friday. He added two aces, two digs and an assistblock. In the 1-3 loss to BYU Saturday, Cole scored a career-high30 points with a career-high 29 kills and two assist blocks. He hit.412 in the match, adding five digs. For the weekend series, heaveraged 6.79 points per game. He averaged 6.29 kills and hit .408.Getting her seventh consecutive first-place finish in the 3-meterdive this past weekend at a Big Ten double-dual meet with Iowa andIllinois at home, freshman Julie Broms (Fr., Springfield,Ill./North Central[Ind.]) has continued to make her presence feltin the diving well in her first season with the Buckeyes. Scoring aseason-high of 333.40 points in the 3-meter dive for the win, Bromsreached the NCAA qualifying mark for the sixth time this season atthe Illinois/Iowa meet. Also competing in the 1-meter dive, Bromshas already taken four first-place finishes. The diving squad hasplaced first in the 1- and 3-meter dives at all but one meet thisseason.
Athletics Good Stuff
The No. 17 men’s tennis team defeated Xavier and ClevelandState Jan. 23 in its season opener in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes,2-0 on the season, defeated the Musketeers and Vikings by 7-0shutouts. Ty Tucker, in his fifth year at the helm of the Buckeyeprogram, has never lost a season opener since his arrival in the1999-2000 season. Next up, Ohio State plays host to DePaul andToledo Jan. 30 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus,Ohio. The Buckeyes will hit the road to No. 23 Georgia, Feb. 1 inAthens, Ga. The fencing team competed against New York, St. John’s,Stanford, Columbia and Yale Jan. 25 at the New York UniversityDuals at the Coles Sports Center in New York, N.Y. The men’s squad,15-1 overall, suffered their first loss to St. John’s, 15-12 andthe women’s team, 15-0 overall, remained undefeated. On the men’sside, Ohio State was victorious over NYU, 15-12, Stanford, 20-7 andYale, 18-9. Their only loss came against St. John’s where Buckeyesfell in sabre competition, 6-3 and in foil, 5-4. The women remainundefeated with 15 wins this season. Ohio State dominated Stanford,24-3 and NYU, 21-6. They surpassed St. John’s, Columbia and Yale,17-10. Next up, the Buckeyes compete at the Notre Dame Duals Jan.31 through Feb. 1 in South Bend, Ind. Ohio State will not seeaction until the Midwest Conference Championship March 6-7 in SouthBend. The No. 18 ranked women’s gymnastics team (4-1, 0-0) enjoyeda week off and now look to hosting No. 21 Illinois and IllinoisState, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. The meet, set to take place in St. JohnArena, will be a coed meet with the No. 1 Ohio State men’sgymnastics team and the Illinois men.
A pair of Buckeyes find themselves on the GymInfo central region statistics board this week. Senior Tiffanie Janke and junior Elizabeth Meaney are both ranked in the Top-5 of the GymInfo central region vault rakings. Janke, who whose average vault score is a 9.912, ranks third in the region, while Meaney’s average of 9.850 is good enough for fifth in the region.
Twelfth-ranked men’s volleyball (3-2 overall) lost 0-3 and 1-3to No. 8 Brigham Young last weekend. Andy Cole was OSU’s top scoredwith 17.5 points on Friday and 30.0 Saturday. Ohio State will hostD’Youville at 7 p.m. Friday in St. John Arena and then open leagueplay in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association atdefending MIVA and NCAA champion Lewis at 2 p.m. Sunday. Thewomen’s tennis team got off to a positive start in its first dualmatch of the spring, taking two of three doubles matches, in anarrow 4-3 loss to then No. 10-ranked Tennessee Volunteers Sundayat the Jesse Owens West Recreational Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Ohio State got a pair of come-from-behind tie-break victories to clinch the doubles point as seniors Lindsay Williams (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and Meaghan Colville (Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) overcame a 4-7 deficit to defeat Volunteers Sabita Maharaj and Ashley Robards, 9-8, before watching fellow seniors Erica Fisk (Indianapolis, Ind./ Pike) and Jackie Leskovar (Cambridge, Ontario/ N.C. State) knock off No. 50 ranked Tammy Encina and Majen Immink, 9-8 (3).
In singles, Williams came back to upset No. 13 ranked Encina in the No. 1 spot in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and, in the No. 6 position, freshman Kristen Messmer (Lutherville, Md./ McDonogh) beat Vicky Jones in two sets, 6-2, 7-5.
The Buckeyes return to action Sunday against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The women’s ice hockey team gained two conference points on theroad as it split with Bemidji State last weekend. The Beavers slidpast the Buckeyes, 4-3 in overtime, Jan. 23 in Bemidji, Minn. OSUcame back defeating BSU, 3-1, Jan. 24. Ohio State’s penalty-killingunit held Bemidji State to just one of 11 power-play chances in twogames. The Buckeyes have stopped their opponents on 85-of-93power-plays this season. The Buckeyes outshot the Beavers in bothgames last weekend. The Buckeyes have outshot their opponents inthe last seven contests. OSU improved its record to 8-3-1 whentaking more shots this season. Ohio State continues its roadstretch when they face non-conference foe Mercyhurst at 2 p.m.Saturday in Erie, Pa. The meeting marks only the second time theBuckeyes and Lakers have met. In their first meeting, the Lakersdefeated the Buckeyes, 2-1, in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 25, 2003. Thetrack and field teams placed first in both the men’s and women’scompetitions against Big Ten rivals Purdue and Indiana, Saturday atFrench Field House. The Buckeye men totaled 114 team points, withIndiana taking second with 97 points and Purdue following with 76.Ohio State’s 123 team points won the women’s end as the Buckeyesbested the 112-point effort by Indiana and 80 points accumulated byPurdue.
14 Buckeyes turned in first-place efforts as senior Dan Taylor and sophomore Amarachi Ukabam combined to sweep the shot put and weight throw events, while senior Nosa Ehimwenman and junior Rosalind Goodwin claimed top honors in both the long jump and triple jump. Taylor, Ukabam and Goodwin all measured NCAA indoor championship qualifying marks in their respective events. Freshman Jenna Harris also claimed multiple wins as she bested the fields in both the 60 and 200-meter dash events.
Ohio State welcomes the largest field of the indoor season to French Field House for the 2004 Ohio State Invitational Saturday at 11 a.m.
The wrestling team (5-6, 1-1 Big Ten) dropped a tight 20-14decision to No. 6 Penn State Sunday as top-ranked HWT TommyRowlands dropped his first bout of the season to No. 2 Pat Cumminsby a 3-2 margin. The Buckeyes claimed an early 8-4 advantage aftermajor decisions by Anthony Magistrelli and John Clark and movedahead to 11-7 after a decision win by J.D. Bergman at 197. With theRowlands defeat, OSU held a 11-10 edge, which would be the last ofthe match as PSU won four of the final five bouts.
The Buckeyes crawled to within a 17-14 deficit heading the final match at 149 after Theo Dotson scored a 12-10 decision, his first win in the dual season, at 141. Buckeye 149 Jeff Ratliff suffered a 8-3 loss that sent the Buckeyes to the 20-14 defeat and their fifth straight loss.
The men’s basketball team plays host to Big Ten Conferenceleader Wisconsin at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Value City Arena. The gamewill be televised to a local audience by ESPN Plus and will bebroadcast in Columbus by WBNS 10 TV. The Buckeyes then travel toPurdue for a noon game Saturday in West Lafayete, Ind. TheBoilermakers are tied for the conference lead with a 4-1 recordheading into its annual battle with intrastate rival Indiana, also4-1, this evening. The Buckeyes are 13-4 in Value City Arenaagainst ranked opponents. Wisconsin is rated the No. 17 team in thewriters’ Associated Press Poll and No. 13 in the coaches’ ESPN/USAToday poll this week. Ohio State is 5-3 all-time when facing rankedWisconsin teams. The women’s basketball team (10-7, 2-4 Big Ten)fell to No. 7/8 Penn State (15-3, 8-0 Big Ten), 70-64, Sundayafternoon in front of a season-high 4,914 at Value City Arena inColumbus, Ohio. Freshman Jessica Davenport (Columbus, Ohio/ColumbusIndependence) tallied 17 points, senior LaToya Turner(Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) added 11 and rookie BrandieHoskins (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) netted 11 points, 10assists and only one turnover for her first double-double as aBuckeye. Three days earlier, the Buckeye lost to No. 7/8 Purdue(15-2, 5-1 Big Ten), 55-47, at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.Davenport tallied her second consecutive and third careerdouble-double with a career-high 23 points (9-of-12) and a15-rebound effort in 40 minutes vs. the Boilermakers. Davenport hada personal-best six offensive rebounds and also added three blocks.The men’s golf team opens up the spring portion of the 2003-04schedule as the Buckeyes travel to Gainesville, Fla. to compete inthe 2004 Sun Trust Gator Invitational. During the fall, theBuckeyes competed in four events, placing in the Top 5 in two ofthe four. Brett Williams established himself as the top golfer ofthe fall, competing in nine rounds and averaging 71.8 strokes perround. Williams’s highest finish of the fall came at the 2003Landfall Classic were he finished with a three-round total of 213.The women’s swimming and diving team defeated Iowa 225.5-126.5,while narrowly losing to Illinois 178.5-174.5 Saturday at the MikePeppe Aquatic Center. The Buckeyes exchanged the lead several timeswith the Fighting Illini, entering the last event ahead by fivepoints. Swimming head-to-head with the Illini for first place inthe final event, the Buckeyes missed first place by 67one-hundredths of one second and took second-place, putting theIllini ahead by four points at the end of the meet. First placefinishers included Nicole Maglich (So., Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) inthe 500-yard freestyle, Kylie Lancken (Jr., Pymble, Australia/Ravenswood) in the 200-yard backstroke, Deanna Strunk (So., WestLawn, Pa./Wilson) in the 400-yard individual medley, Gulsah Gunenc(Fr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) in the 200-yard butterfly,Katie Severson (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) in the 50-yardfreestyle and Amber Simmons (Fr., Sparks, Md./Hereford) and JulieBroms (Fr., Springfield, Ill./North Central[Ind.]) in the 1- and3-meter dives.
The Buckeyes travel to East Lansing, Mich. Friday to compete against Michigan State and Notre Dame at the Charles McCaffree Pool.
The No. 1 men’s gymnastics team defeated No. 8Illinois-Chicago, 214.45 – 208.15, Jan. 24 in Chicago at the UICPhysical Education Building. OSU won all six events and at leasttwo Buckeyes finished in the Top 3 on all events.
Freshman Willie Ito (Huntington Beach, Calif.) finished first on pommel horse (9.4), his third consecutive victory on the event. Randy Monahan (Jr., Elizabethtown, Pa.) won the floor, vault and high bar titles, scoring a 9.1, 9.45 and 9.4, respectively. Cody Trobaugh (Jr., Dallas, Texas) recorded a 9.5 to win rings and posted a 9.1 to finish first on parallel bars.
The Buckeyes swept the Top 3 positions on parallel bars, with Trobaugh first, Nicholaus Searcy (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) second, recording an 8.95, and Monahan third, scoring an 8.9. Senior captain Jamey Houle (Enfield, Conn.) recorded his second career high of the season on vault, posting a 9.15. Monahan captured his third consecutive all-around title, scoring a 55.15.
Junior captain Randy Monahan successfully captured both Big Ten Men’s Gymnast of the Week and NCAA Men’s Gymnast of the Week accolades for the weeks Jan. 11 and Jan. 18. Monahan earned the honors for his performances in the team’s Windy City Invitational and Minnesota meets, Jan. 10 and 17.
Up next for Ohio State is Illinois in a co-ed meet at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena.
The No. 15 men’s hockey team continues CCHA play with a singlegame at Bowling Green Saturday. The Buckeyes and Falcons will faceoff at 7:05 p.m. at the BGSU Ice Arena; OSU beat the Falcons in theearlier meeting, 7-0, Nov. 29. The Buckeyes were swept by MichiganState over the weekend by scores of 4-2 and 3-0. The baseball teamhas been ranked as high as 26th in the four national preseasonpolls, which were released earlier this month. The NationalCollegiate Baseball Writers Association picked the Buckeyes 26th inits preseason Top 35 poll. Ohio State is ranked 31st by CollegiateBaseball and 32nd by Baseball America. In the USA Today SportsWeekly/ESPN Top 25 coaches poll, the Buckeyes were not ranked, butreceived the 28th most votes. The Buckeyes open the season Feb. 13against Texas, the 2002 national champion, at the Minute MaidCollege Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas. The teamalso will play Kansas State and Texas Tech in the event which alsofeatures Rice, the 2003 national champion, and Houston. Four ofthose six teams advanced to super regional play in last year’s NCAAtournament. Ohio State began practicing Monday.
Ohio State assistant baseball coach Pat Bangtson will be one of 10 inductees in the Varsity “K” Athletic Hall of Fame at Kent State Friday. Bangtson, who will be part of the 26th induction class at Kent State, was a right-handed pitcher for the Golden Flashes baseball team in the mid-1980s, earning All-MAC honors three straight years, including first-team in 1987. More than a decade-and-a-half since his final game, he still holds the school record with 26 career victories and ranks fourth with 212 career strikeouts. His eight wins in 1986 were the second most in school history at the time. Following his collegiate career, the Tallmadge native pitched five seasons in the Minnesota Twins organization.
