Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State’s women’s soccer team (0-3,0-0) dropped the opening match of the 2002 Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic by a 2-0 count to Marquette University (2-1, 0-0) Friday night at Baujan Field on the campus of the University of Dayton. The Golden Eagles are the third consecutive 2001 NCAA Tournament qualifier the Buckeyes have faced in the early stages of the 2002 season, as OSU once again drops a closely contested battle with another top-flight opponent.
Marquette senior forward Kate Gordon scored the game-winning goal for the Golden Eagles in the 12th minute of the match. Junior midfielder Anne Ioder played a through ball up the middle, which Gordon collected and put into the right side past senior Buckeye goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Gordon also picked up an assist on the second goal, as she found freshman forward Kristie Matola in the box, who buried it into the upper left side.
Marquette held a slight edge in shots at 17-14 with 10 of them aimed at the Buckeye net. Heaney allowed both Golden Eagle goals, while registering one save before being relieved by senior keeper Anna Mitchell (Canton, Ohio) due to injury.
Mitchell tallied five saves during a shutout second half as Head Coach Lori Walker deemed her OSU player of the game.
“The brightest star in the game today was our number two goalie Anna Mitchell,” Walker explained. “She came in and made four very critical saves in the second half. I was very pleased with her performance off the bench.”
Offensively, Ohio State fired seven shots on goal, lead by freshman forward Heather Miller (Centerville, Ohio) with three total shots. “I saw some bright things from our freshman today and I think we will start taking a look at some of the younger players and get them some more minutes over the next couple of games,” Walker stated. “We are a talented team, but we have yet to click so far this season. Hopefully the younger players can mesh with the leadership of the more experienced players in the next couple games”
The Buckeyes will next play the Hoyas of Georgetown University in the tournament finale at 2:30 p.m. this Sunday afternoon at Dayton’s Baujan Field.
