On today’s practice:
“Today was a good one. We had two physical practices. This was the last day of camp where we’re going to do two hard bangers in one day. I thought they responded well. We’ll have more emphasis tomorrow on our special teams.
“Now we start doing a lot more mental and film work. We’ll obviously start studying Texas Tech more towards the end of the week. More importantly we have to make sure we get healed up and get our legs back under us. The kids have been going extremely hard.”
On the first game:
“We really haven’t begun our Texas Tech study. Obviously if you look at their statistics, their quarterback is one of the best in the country and their offense (averages) 400 yards a game. They return a lot of guys defensively. They are a bold team that is returning all their people and you shouldn’t have to say much more than that.”
On Matt Wilhelm:
“I think Matt has had a good camp. I feel good about what he is doing. He’s flying around. He’s stronger than he’s been. Because he missed the spring I think he has the juices flowing more and is going to have a great year.”
On the freshman linebackers:
I think (A.J.) Hawk, (Bobby) Carpenter and (Mike) D’Andrea are doing a good job working in there with the two’s some. There’s no question that those guys know what we’re doing.”
On tomorrows kick scrimmage:
“We hope to get the kicking game under pressure. We want to see the snappers, holders, kickers and kick return men do well especially. It’s a good opportunity to say to some guys, ‘here are some jobs available, now go out and show us.'”
On Mike Nugent: “I think Mike has been solid. He had a big game winner at the end of our drill this morning from about 45. He’s been fairly consistent, but we need him real consistent in the 90 percent range. I hope the lessons he learned last year will carry him this year.”
