Avery to Serve as Head Coach for U.S. Gymnastics Team – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Miles Avery, Ohio State men’s gymnastics head coach, has been selected to serve as the head coach for the United States National Team in a dual meet with China. The meet, scheduled for Aug. 19 in Beijing, will include the top gymnasts from both nations.
“This meet is very important for USA Gymnastics,” Avery said. “China won the last world championship and the last Olympic gold medal. We want to meet on their turf before the Chinese travel to the U.S. for the 2003 World Championships in Anaheim (Calif.). It’s important for us to do well.”
Avery will lead the U.S. squad including six of the top American gymnasts from the U.S. National Team – former Buckeye Blaine Wilson, Morgan Hamm, Paul Hamm, Brett McClure, Sean Townsend and Guard Young. Kevin Mazeika and Stacy Maloney will serve as assistant coaches for the team.
“This is the best team the United States could have assembled,” Avery said. “These are the six best gymnasts in our country. China also will have their best gymnasts in the meet.”
The athletes’ performances will be at the highest caliber, as the meet will be held the week following the U.S. Gymnastics National Championships (Aug. 7-10 in Cleveland, Ohio) and the week after the Chinese National Championships.
This marks the second-consecutive year Avery will travel to China. Last year he was an assistant coach for the U.S. squad that competed at the World University Games.
