COLUMBUS, Ohio– The No. 3 Ohio State rowing team will be a part of the 12-team pool participating in the 2002 NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 in Indianapolis, Ind., the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee announced Tuesday. Indiana University and the United State Rowing Association will serve as co-hosts for the event which will be held at Eagle Creek Reservoir.
The Buckeyes, who are the 2002 Big Ten Champions and finished second at the 2002 Central Regional Finals will attend the national championship regatta for the third-consecutive year. Ohio State made their first appearance at the national regatta in 2000, finishing ninth. The team then made an even stronger showing in 2001 with a fourth-place finish.
This season, the Buckeyes’ first varsity 8 has compiled a 19-2 record. Losses were to defending national champion Washington at the San Diego Crew Classic and No. 5 Michigan at the Buckeye Invitational. Ohio State avenged the loss twice since, defeating the Wolverines in the first varsity 8 competition at both the Big Ten championship and the central regional finals.
While the Buckeyes look to have their best finish in program history at the 2002 NCAA Championships, the team will have stiff competition lying between them and their first national championship. Also selected for the 12-team pool are defending national champion No. 1 Washington, No. 2 Princeton and Big Ten rivals Michigan and No. 11 Michigan State.
Three boats from each team decide the championship; the first and second varsity 8 and the first varsity 4. A first varsity 4 Grand Final win is worth 10 points with the second varsity 8 worth 20 and the first varsity 8 championship worth 30 points.
The selection committee considers regional championship results, rankings, late-season performance, head-to-head results, results against teams already selected and results against regionally-ranked teams in choosing the 12-team pool as well as the four at-large first varsity 8 boat bids.
