OSU Tops In Duet, Trio Prelims – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$Ohio State is off to a solid start at the 26th annual U.S. Collegiate%^$Synchronized Swimming Championships, taking top honors in duet and trio%^$preliminaries on Thursday.%^$
%^$Ohio State’s Carolina and Isabela Moraes earned a 95.666 to capture first in%^$duet by a full 2.332 over Stanford’s Lindsey Wigginton and Erin Dobratz. The%^$Moraes twins finished 12th in the 2000 Olympic Games and 11th at the 2001%^$World Championships for Brazil.%^$
%^$Moraes, Moraes and Mary Hofer of Spring Valley, Calif. teamed up in trio to%^$earn a 95.167. Stanford’s Erin Dobratz, Katie Norris and Lindsey Wigginton%^$stand second at 94.333.%^$
%^$However, the surprise of the day came from Stanford’s Norris, who topped%^$two-time Collegiate champion Carolina Moraes in the solo prelim, 93.500 to%^$92.833. Norris, of Tallahassee, Fla., is a member of U.S. National Team I%^$that finished fourth in team at the 2001 World Championships.%^$
%^$Host Wheaton (Mass.) College is led by sophomore Beth Percy who scored an%^$86.667 for fifth place. Percy, from St. Louis, Mo., finished sixth a year%^$ago. Percy and partner Jamie Sallier – also from St. Louis – were the only%^$non-Division I entrant among the top 10 duets, scoring an 83.666 for seventh%^$place.%^$
%^$The top eight athletes from today’s preliminary rounds will advance to%^$Saturday’s finals.%^$
%^$More than 200 athletes from 22 universities are competing for collegiate%^$national titles in the solo, duet, trio and team events. The championships%^$are an open-class meet, combining competition for NCAA Divisions I, II and%^$III, plus NAIA schools.%^$
%^$The Ohio State University is attempting to win its third consecutive, and%^$22nd overall title in the 26th year of the championships. Top athletes%^$advance to the U.S. National Championships and 2002 National Team Trials,%^$April 18-20 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.%^$
%^$Competition continues at Balfour Natatorium on Friday with figures in the%^$morning, and team semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Finals in all events begin%^$Saturday at 10:20 a.m.%^$
