%^$%^$COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team compete in the Wheaton Invitational Saturday in Norton Mass. Wheaton will also play host to the 2002 Collegiate National Championships March 21-23.%^$

%^$The Ohio State synchronized swimming team captured first place at the Walsh Invitational Saturday in Canton, Ohio. The Buckeyes scored 88 points to defeat second-place Canisius (78) and third-place Walsh (64).%^$
%^$Victoria Bowen had a strong performance, contributing wins in three events. Bowen took individual honors to win the solo event with a score of 93.334. Bowen and teammate Lindsay Newbill earned top honors in the duet (93.334) while Bowen, Suzanna Hyatt and Kim Lester teamed up to win the trio (91.500). OSU also notched a victory in the team event with a score of 94.000.%^$
%^$OSU COLLEGE ASSOCIATION MEET – FEB. 9
%^$The Ohio State synchronized swimming team finished first at the OSU College Association Meet. The Buckeyes totaled 122 points, while Walsh finished second (84) and William & Mary was third (78.5).The Buckeyes captured the top two places in the team event. Senior Carolina Moraes notched top honors in the solo event, scoring a 96.667. Teammates Mary Hofer and Heather Burdick placed second and third, respectively. Sisters Carolina and Isabela Moraes were first in the duo event with a score of 97.000, while Victoria Bowen and Lindsay Newbill finished second. The Moraes sisters and Hofer teamed up to win the trio and Bowen, Suzanna Hyatt and Beth Kreimer placed second. OSU also fared well in figures as Carolina Moraes finished first in the ‘A’ figures, Lauren Marsh placed first in ‘B’ figures and Mary Elliott took first in the ‘C’ figures.%^$
%^$MICHIGAN INVITATIONAL – FEB. 3
%^$OSU notched first-place honors at Michigan’s Maize and Blue Invitational Feb. 3 with a score of 102, knocking off second place Stanford (99) and third place Walsh (74). Heather Burdick finished second in the solo event while Sharon Mejia, Stacey Coffman and Burdick finished second in the trio. Teammates Laura Green,Bethany Galla and Isla Turner were third in the same event while Leilani Torres and Katie Meyer placed third in the duet. The Buckeyes also earned a second-place finish in the team competition.%^$
%^$ALABAMA-BIRMINGHAM – FEB. 2
%^$The Buckeyes defeated UAB, 88-78, Feb. 2. Mary Hofer earned top honors in the solo event with a score of 94.333. Isabela Moraes and Carolina Moraes finished first in the duet with a score of 94.666 while Hofer and the Moraes sisters teamed up to win the trio event with a score of 93.667. In the team competition, OSU topped UAB with a routine score of 93.833.%^$
%^$OSU TRI-MEET – JAN. 19
%^$The Buckeyes defeated Miami (Ohio) and Walsh University in a tri-meet hosted by Ohio State Jan. 19. The Buckeyes ended the meet with a team total of 119.5 points, ahead of the Cavaliers (85) and Marlins (31.5). Mary Hofer earned top honors in the solo event with a score of 88.666. Isabela Moraes and Carolina Moraes finished first in the duet (94.500) while the three of them teamed up to win the trio (94.500).Carolina Moraes finished first in the ‘A’ figures event with a score of 76.738 while teammates Laura Green and Mary Elliott were first in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ figure events, respectively.%^$
%^$COLLEGITATE FIGURES INVITE – DEC. 14
%^$Ohio State continued its unbeaten streak from the 2000-01 National Championship season to open the 2001-02 season with a victory over Alabama-Birmingham Dec. 14 at the Collegiate Figure Invitational held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Ohio State finished with an overall score of 19 points ahead of Alabama-Birmingham’s 17 points. Senior Carolina Moraes captured first place in the ‘A’ Figures event with a score of 84.835. Sister Isabela Moraes finished second and teammate Mary Hofer was third (83.381).%^$
%^$2001 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
%^$Ohio State sucessfully defended its national title for a second-consecutive year at the 2001 U.S. Collegiate National Championships March 31at the Midtown Aquatic Center in Newport News, Va. The Buckeyes finished with an overall score of 99 over second-place Stanford (88) to reign as the Collegiate National Champions for the 21st time in the 25-year history of the annual competition. Carolina Moraes led the Buckeyes with four first-place performances in the solo, duet, trio and in figures events to win the meet’s highest invitational point title. In the solo competitio, Moraes and twin sister Isabela nabbed first place in the duet. Mary Hofer joined the Moraes twins for a first-place victory in trio. In the team competition, Ohio State ‘A’ team’s “Firebird” routine earned top honors. Swimming for the ‘A’ team were Victoria Bowen, Katie Edwards, Hofer, Suzanna Hyatt, Beth Kreimer, Anna Eng, Kristen Price, and Isabela Moraes.%^$
%^$GET TO KNOW COACH WITTER
%^$Linda Witter enters her sixth season as head coach of the Ohio State synchronized swimming team after leading the Buckeyes to back-to-back National Championship wins in 2000 and 2001.Witter is no stranger to winning national titles, marking her fourth such win in six years as the Ohio State mentor. Just the third head coach in the history of the sport at Ohio State, she has maintained the Buckeyes’ tradition of dominance in synchronized swimming. Witter began her coaching career in 1970 and during her over 30 years of involvement with synchronized swimming, she has become one of the most respected coaches in the sport. This is evidenced by her numerous stints coaching U.S. National squads, beginning at the Pan American Games in 1978 and most recently in 1996 when she coaches the U.S. National Team. Witter received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Southern Connecticut University in 1972.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes will return to action next Saturday to compete at split locations against Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas and at the Wheaton Invitational in Norton, Mass.%^$
