Fencers Fare Well At Junior Olympics – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio-Four of the seven members of the Ohio State fencing team placed in the top 20 of their individual events at the 2002 United States Fencing Association’s Junior Olympic Fencing Championships in Columbus. The four-day event drew nearly 1,000 competitors nationwide.
The Thompson sisters placed the highest among Buckeyes at the competition. Metta Thompson (Fr., Rochester, N.Y./East) took third place in the women’s foil, while Hanna Thompson (Fr., Rochester, N.Y./East) took fifth place out of 152 competitors. In women’s sabre Jennifer Ando (Fr., Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson) came in 49th out of 101 competitors.
On the men’s side William Jones (Jr., Ft. Leonardwood, Mo./Waynesville) and Brian Gross (Fr., Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) made the most noise in men’s epee. Jones tied for ninth and Gross came in close behind, finishing 12th out of 179 competitors. Ricardo Jimenez (Fr., El Paso, Texas/Cathedral) came in 83rd. Craig Galanter (So., El Paso, Texas/Franklin) came in 92nd out of 190 competitors.
The Buckeyes return to action this weekend when they travel to South Bend, Ind. for the NCAA Midwest Championships Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 23-24).
